none2585··on Woman in Brazil enslaved for 55 years by 3 generations of the same family
You should read The New Jim Crow
none2585··on Woman in Brazil enslaved for 55 years by 3 generations of the same family
Not the state but the companies that run the prisons and those that contract the workers to work at an extremely low wage.
none2585··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
Well damn I'm sorry now I'm curious - a direct quote from what?
none2585··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
Genuinely trying to help - one would generally phrase this as "... makes you stronger".
none2585··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
Betteridge's law here

"We" live in a democracy and our leaders are chosen by "us". You don't get to pick and choose. You are your government assuming you're from any western democracy.

The planet is becoming inhospitable for humans and honestly likely for the best. At least some folks will get rich out of it.

none2585··on I used to love Claude, but the latest models are slowly ruining it
Yeah I'm in a similar boat - these experiences are wildly outside of my experience working on a moderately large, professional codebase on a daily basis.
none2585··on The Chinese Voice Actor Forced to Prove He's Human
The article uses Kafkaesque and boy I cannot think of a better way to describe having to prove to platforms your voice is real because it had been stolen at such scale that people assume it is AI.
none2585··on Star Just Ate a Planet, and It's Not Done Yet
This is my position as well - people say we need to do things for the planet. Planet will be just fine - it's us who will suffer and honestly it's for the best. Just end this shit
none2585··on Completing a computer science degree on Coursera
Ha, definitely agree well said :D

I think the biggest thing is most software "engineering" jobs are in no way engineering and are closer to a trade like being a mechanic or (imo) a doctor.

It's fairly rote - you need good judgement and to stay current in latest state of the art but generally speaking you're not researching (nor should you be) cutting edge algorithms or anything.

Add a new button, add some parameters to this analytics call, implement dark mode. These are the things that everyone is doing at their six-figure tech jobs.

none2585··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
No I'm with you, I'm inspired. Let's fight them!
none2585··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
This sounds like exactly the gumption we need to finally get the federal government to represent the common man.
none2585··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
I'll join your revolution! Let's go bud!!!!
none2585··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
We can hope but those types tend to fly in private jets.
none2585··on Staying Awake (2008)
I think specific, but not archaic. The written word can be beautiful like any other form of art - it's not only about transmitting information but transmitting emotion. Sorta like a photograph, painting, or song.
none2585··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
I did not go to an Ivy League but many of my classes at an alright school were graded on a curve and so C was average, B/D was one standard deviation above/below, and A/F was two.
none2585··on Kids act would require age checks to get online
Unfortunately "some places" does not include the US federal government.
none2585··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
Maybe in your country but not in the hellhole that is the US.
none2585··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
From your linked Wikipedia articles many corporations including Google were part of that opposite campaign. Exactly the type of people donating untold millions to our legislatures. Had nothing to do with any kind of grassroots pressure.
none2585··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
Then donate millions in campaign contributions to ensure they actually care at all what you think!
none2585··on Reading the news is the new smoking
I was exactly like this and did exactly the same thing in 2024 and it has been a great weight lifted off of me. I allow news about stuff reported here, Polygon, or my local small-town paper but nothing like NYT (of which I used to read daily).

The biggest criticism I've received is that I am in a privileged position and so I can afford to do so. I think this is probably true but my mental health isn't worth the alternative.

none2585··on Writers and Drugs
Feels like there's also a connection of being brilliant and thus tortured so they turn to the escape of self medication.
none2585··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
It is, candid definitely does not mean secretive
none2585··on Hospitals and universities repurposing drugs at 90% lower cost
I believe you two are arguing the same thing. Maybe the poster could have better worded it "general thought among most people is that the USA ..."

Because you are both absolutely right.

none2585··on AI misidentification results in wrongful arrest; man seeks justice
Racist technology and a racist plaintiff in two racist states. What could go wrong????
none2585··on GrapheneOS user reported to authorities for using GrapheneOS
Also make sure you're white!
none2585··on India's surprise baby bust
Unironically why care if this species continues?
none2585··on Meta's ships facial recognition on smart glasses
We are beyond precedent in so many respects, violence is likely the only way back to a more sane timeline.
none2585··on The Public Should Own Half of the Big A.I. Companies
If a 1T company struggles do you really think we (the US) wouldn't bail them out just like the banks and the auto industry?
