I've had to do all of those things, and still agree that towns and cities being designed with cars as the default mode of transport is insane

nondave··on Std::visit is everything wrong with modern C++ (2017)
The post raises some good points, but I nonetheless think that C++ is a better language for having std::variant. It can result in some very clear, expressive code, despite the boilerplate and dabbling with more advanced language features that it necessitates.

Indeed, from the article: "In spite of all of this, I’ll be busy encouraging my coworkers to use variant if anybody needs me. Sum types are such a useful concept that they’re worth the pain[...]"

nondave··on Brexit fuels brain drain as skilled Britons head to the EU
I don't disagree that it's _been happening_, i.e. some of its effects have happened already and continue to do so, but I wouldn't want to say "done and dusted, economy's fine" until it's properly happened and we're into 2021.

I'm not sure we can come to any real conclusions about the economic impacts of it until we get well into 2021, even if many businesses have been preparing for it.
nondave··on Stories and lessons from working with Jeff Bezos on the original Kindle
Strongly agree about the PocketBook website. It was so slow to load I assumed it was broken and left.
nondave··on Online classes are not worth cost of full tuition
There can be disadvantages for technically competent folks too. I'm really missing going over technical ideas on a whiteboard with colleagues.
nondave··on IBM Releases Fully Homomorphic Encryption Toolkit for macOS and iOS
"Toolkit" seems like a bit of a stretch - as far as I can tell this is just a small example progam which uses HElib.
