nomoreplease··on US special operations vets carry out daring mission to save Afghan allies
> And he certainly would have blamed the Afghans for their own plight; this again is what Trump did in 2019, saying that our Syrian Kurdish allies didn't deserve our help because they didn't help us on D-Day in World War Two, whatever that means. Beyond idiotic.

Biden essentially blamed them too during his recent White House speech

nomoreplease··on We built a system like Apple’s to flag CSAM and concluded the tech was dangerous
I believe Jonathan Mayer (one of the authors) is a user/commenter here on HackerNews
nomoreplease··on Balaji: The collapse in state capacity has not been priced in
I get that, but I’m still not convinced. Running deficits is fine, but you can’t do it in perpetuity. When do you suggest we stop?
nomoreplease··on Balaji: The collapse in state capacity has not been priced in
Your arguments against the balanced budget don’t convince me. Have you looked at the federal, state, and local debts lately? It is mind boggling
nomoreplease··on Court rules California's Prop. 22 on Uber, Lyft drivers unconstitutional
Thanks for clarifying. I was confused
nomoreplease··on Uber prices seem to increase when phone battery is low
This is alleged “with evidence”. I understand you want more evidence. It’s alleged and now others can try to simulate.

For what it’s worth, I was able to simulate prices ranges of $50-130 for the same ride with a few friends when we were all standing next to each other. Any new phone shows a low price first, if you search again the price goes up nearly 50%.

So simulating the evidence here might be hard based on other algorithms Uber uses

nomoreplease··on Water Conflict Chronology
Thank you for the insight
nomoreplease··on Water Conflict Chronology
Right. I should clarify that I meant for eating & drinking (survival), not necessarily showering or gardening
nomoreplease··on Water Conflict Chronology
With the water shortages around the world, can residential rain barrels provide a sufficient alternative? Is there a study for the number of barrels per person per climate?
nomoreplease··on ‘Horizon Workrooms’: remote collaboration reimagined
The classroom setting is something I might use this for (ship it to my colleagues) but the identity & access mess is a dealbreaker. Requires two different identities, and one of them is Facebook? No enterprise federation?

> Using Workrooms requires a Workrooms account, which is separate from your Oculus or Facebook accounts, although your Oculus username may be visible to other users in some cases……And to experience Workrooms in VR, you’ll need to access the app on Quest 2, which requires a Facebook login.

nomoreplease··on China, the WHO and the power grab that fuelled a pandemic
No it wouldn’t have, but OP also said nothing about that
nomoreplease··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 BTC for under $3000 yesterday (2011)
Tangent: have the MtGox lawsuits finished? It seemed the main personas are bound to secrecy until they conclude, but that there is a lot of incorrect speculation on what happened in the collapse
nomoreplease··on Former college professor accused of serial arson is denied bail in California
I’ve been told that in some states, wildlife and marine ranger have more authority than other law enforcement. Not sure if that’s apples & apples or apples & ooranges though
nomoreplease··on Coinbase Drops Promise of Token’s Cash Backing That Wasn’t True
That’s a significant change from when they IPOd. Was this disclosed to their shareholders a few months ago?
nomoreplease··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained (2020)
Apple has been using some dark patterns to force people to use iCloud. Telling them they haven’t finished setting up their phone. It notifies you until you sign up for the free tier, and then when that’s filled up it pesters you again
nomoreplease··on Interstellar nuclear-powered transport (1968) [pdf]
I’ve heard of nuclear bomb propulsion before but I had no idea that 30 million hydrogen bombs we’re proposed. That’s insane!
nomoreplease··on Done with YC: Age Discrimination
> because when there was more money (and there was at one time) it was enough to tempt a non-trivia

My recollection is the opposite. I picked a random web archive day 12+ years ago and confirmed it was a laughably small sum:

https://web.archive.org/web/20090302183945/http://ycombinato...

> We usually invest $5000 + $5000n, where n is the number of participating founders (i.e. 2 founders get $15,000, 3 get $20,000), in return for between 2% and 10% of the company. The median is 6%.

nomoreplease··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained (2020)
This really is something Tim needs to address before he again stands on stage and give lip service to Privacy with a capital P.

We also need hardball journalists to start asking Tim these tough questions instead of fawning over AirPods

And we need employees to start demanding this internally

nomoreplease··on U.S. Senate Vote in Favor of Amendment That Threatens Crypto Industry
Derivatives industry means one thing though, and doesn’t mean the mathematics industry. It’s not ambiguous either
nomoreplease··on Longitudinal analysis shows durable immune memory after SARS-CoV-2 infection
How common are false positives? I had multiple different tests from different locations. Slow and fast tests. My tests were not early on either.

I’d rather trust that than my neighbor’s paper vaccine card which can be easily faked

nomoreplease··on What happens if you stick your head in a particle accelerator? (2017)
> He didn't know anything was happening at the time but ended up losing a couple limbs.

Surely that would have been reported by the university (PR, damage control) and in the news? Can you confirm?

nomoreplease··on Longitudinal analysis shows durable immune memory after SARS-CoV-2 infection
I have proof of infection from several tests. I’m starting to wonder why I can just use that instead of vaccine evidence?
nomoreplease··on U.S. Senate Vote in Favor of Amendment That Threatens Crypto Industry
Everything in the article leads me to believe this only threatens the “cryptocurrency” industry, but I don’t have the actual text to the amendment. Is anything threatening “crypto” itself?
nomoreplease··on Crypto community slams ‘disastrous’ new amendment to big infrastructure bill
Perhaps the PoW profiteers are lobbying against PoS?
nomoreplease··on Vaccination Should Be Compulsory
> while vaccines protect the population in general by stopping the spread of Covid.

This is common misconception about the COVID-19 vaccines and about several other vaccines. They don’t necessarily stop infection/transmission, but reduce the symptoms and prevent you from ending up in the ER.

Those who downvoted can find this basic information on CDC, WebMD, JH, BMJ, etc

nomoreplease··on Firefighters bring large battery fire near Geelong under control
Is this transition happening for their home battery products too?
nomoreplease··on Xi Jinping’s Capitalist Smackdown Sparks a $1T Reckoning
> Call it progressive authoritarianism.

That’s a terrible term. Bloomberg already has a bad history of journalism, but appreciating Authoritarianism is a new low

nomoreplease··on Pro-Trump social network becomes safe haven for ISIS
Article mentions they discovered this by following known ISIS accounts on Facebook. Which is ironic that there are “known” accounts on Facebook that aren’t being deleted
nomoreplease··on Google Cloud reported an operating loss of $5.6B in 2020
It says in the article this is mostly due to headcount and compensation. That’s a recurring expense and not a TPU that can be sold
nomoreplease··on Who will pay to protect tech giants from rising seas?
According to the article, the ones they built don’t meet federal safety standards. This is probably why it seems easy.
