noisebuffer··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Have an optional crypto stamp and prioritize it, generating extra income for postal services
noisebuffer··on What if social media isn't hurting kids?
Perhaps the 350000 chemicals we’ve introduced into our environment are hurting children. Don’t tell the corporations though.
noisebuffer··on iPhone Duo
I would imagine this helps a lot having two screens side by side. You can remote into another phone and help a user like an old relative accomplish something. Or run a virtual machine or AI control panel
noisebuffer··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
I don’t exactly see how, if there’s no exploit.

Either way there’s other realms it’s relevant like armed drones policing a street. Without a way for the public to activate a shutdown sequence, it becomes very difficult to stop if it starts murdering innocent children on some glitch. Which you cannot have because then the whole purpose is ineffective. Likewise digital communication is purposeless and face competing mediums for sure

Without vulnerability derived backdoors I am convinced the government will strong arm the corporations to build a backdoor for the three letter agencies—at least in the US. But we also are at the dawn of quantum systems which could make interception and spying impossible or at least made obvious to the user when it happens.

Exhausting infrastructure vulnerabilities even without quantum could be a game changer for many technologies and enable things we can’t do right now, like vote on our phones.

noisebuffer··on I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla
To create an AI that people will want to use, we need people to use it so we get better data, improve it, and learn how to control models. It’s a catch-22. I definitely don’t want AI tabs in Firefox but I can see why all this might be necessary because of massive potential for a superintelligence to solve problems or open new doors we didn’t know existed. But then we have to ask ourselves if these new pathways for humanity are so far removed from what humans can accomplish on their own, is there pride in a new revolution akin to the human derived pride in what we have accomplished on our own for the Industrial Revolution, for example, or even just petrol or nuclear power discovery?
noisebuffer··on Subscription Prices Gone Wild
Video stores had value even if it was to overhear a random side comment on a movie that's popular in the real world by the voice of another human being. The subscription model should pay us, they isolate us and tell us how to think and view the world. I'm not paying for that.
noisebuffer··on Ask HN: How do you build and sustain an offline tech discussion community?
Call it something clever, LAN party 2.0 maybe?

Get sponsors: energy drinks, Cisco for switching unless using wifi

Set goals, host presentations showing what was developed or learned from last session

noisebuffer··on A 900-page AI-generated Biblical trilogy about the End Times
I tried to read this but it's difficult. There's a lot of struggle to define what it is and what it is not and I think the answer is simple. It's entertainment.
