nogabebop23··on YouTube-dl is now part of GitHub/dmca.git
streaming through your browser from the YT site is clearly an allowed and promoted use - it's explicitly in the T&S.

>> not every argument can be won with science.

Is this even a science argument though? The law and its enforcement may occasionally use science to illustrate specific cases (the implementation) but it's more the documentation of a giant, waterfall-based architecture project. Why are we suprised when we see specific cases that seem like failures despite agreeing with the fundamental premise?

THis is likely a consideration. From my decidely non-lawyer viewpoint the RIAA is using a terrible law, but still a law and they have grounds under this law for their claims. GH and MS have deep pockets and if they tried to initially fight this I'm confident they would settle. If you're the RIAA who would you rather go after - someone who will pay after a little bit of fighting, or a huge group who will immediately roll over but have nothing to give you?
nogabebop23··on Hackers hijack and publish mental health data of hundreds of people
not sure I would leave the keys in my unlocked car, but when I lived in a city with a lot more petty crime many people left their doors unlocked and some spare change in the cup holder. Everyday it was gone but no other damage vs. smashed windows for no gain. It pissed me off but others saw it as equivalent to pay for parking

this doesn't appear to be a ransomware attack, just plain old blackmail. Insecure backups would actually make it worse...
nogabebop23··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
There are a lot of arguments against this counter example, including the fact that the browser does not facilitate you getting access in any other way than originally intended (legal) and it honors the caching policy defined for the resource (technical)
nogabebop23··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
This is correct; the most common commit to the youtube-dl repo is fixing the js decoding that YT changes regularly to prevent eaxctly this type of access.

Obfuscation is clearly an accepted technological approach to security and control, if not always a good or effective one.

nogabebop23··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
Unfortunately it's well established that accessing resources that, even if not protected what so ever, without permission is illegal. YT's policy T&S on how and when you can consume it satisfies this.

I believe in the youtube-dl case allowing you to consume videos outside of the T&S is the crime and the automated scale is the punative factor.

IANAL and I don't agree with this; just responding to the parent statement of "You can't circumvent measures that don't exist"

nogabebop23··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
Even if we restrict the target set to "tools with a high likelyhood of being used for an illegal purpose" which I believe youtube-dl belongs in, when is the RIAA going after "guns"?
nogabebop23··on Samsung phones force Mainland China DNS service upon Hong Kong WiFi users
This sort of large and noisy canary is exactly what the world needs more of. How many more people will scream and protest if their phone stops working due to China's actions, vs the vague and abstract cause of "Privacy"? It will also direct their wraith at the correct target.
nogabebop23··on What is expected of a engineering manager?
>> The proper way is to distribute the crap evenly.

This is true of "crap work" (i.e. stupid bugs, wading through documentation) but not of the crap external to the team. Your job as the manager is to deal with it all. You can either work to slow it's generation or suck it down, but it's all on you.

nogabebop23··on What is expected of a engineering manager?
Additions:

* the crap shield is made of Gor-tex so you need to protect the team but also expunge the toxins that build up within. Not all crap is generated outside of the team but you need to get ride of it.

* the crap shield is transparent so the team can see what's happening outside without being covered in it

* the crap shield is retractable so you can let some into the team's atmosphere. Not enough to cause harm, but keep them grounded in the imperfect world in which their work will live.

* the crap shield has a window lock, and you the manager are in control of it. This is for the same reason the driver of a car can lock the windows in the back seat to stop the kids from opening them when you're in the car wash.

nogabebop23··on The fresh smell of ransomed coffee
Doesn't this ignore the broader question of IoT devices for things like coffee makers in the first place? It seems like internet-enabled for the sake of it, which is cool in the "We built a java-based coffee maker monitor for the break room back in 1991" way, but kind of sad today.

Product progressions in my lifetime:

   1. Put a clock in it

   2. Put a radio in it

   3. Put a camera in it

   4. Hook everything up to the internet
nogabebop23··on The fresh smell of ransomed coffee
I'm skeptical that Amazon did this out of a genuine concern of IoT security. Seems more likely they wanted to be firmly at the center of all the data acquisition, and while they're no doubt more secure than the average IoT maker they can never be as secure as the act of not collecting the information in the first place. Their new interior security drones are next-level distopian. How long till we're avoiding the Half Life 2 drones inside our own homes?
nogabebop23··on The fresh smell of ransomed coffee
This is how I feel about the security cameras we have at my house. Initially I got very anxious every time a (usually false-positive) alert arrived; now I'm so desensitized I basically ignore them. I know when my house or garage gets burglarized I'll have some nice, grainy over-exposed videos of the entire event but no real advantage over where I was before.

I guess this is the crux: are they providing a platform and marketing, or are the gate-keeping rent seekers between the developer and their customers?

I agree with this belief, as well as not letting perfect be the enemy of better, as in this case: I can choose Apple over FB while still not liking Apple.

The problem is it's really hard to hold these apparently contradictory positions in your head at the same time. We love binary distinctions on single dimension axes because our brains are more efficiently with this paradigm. In truth the world at any degree of scale does not work this way and we've got to do a better job developing more nuanced personal positions.

No, you'll quickly become addicted to the peace of mind and security you feel from using Meth Minder, finding it near impossible to give up. At this point our montly rate increases to $5K/month and you will do anything to ensure your monthly fix. We've secured $100M in VC on our incredibly low churn due to the addictive nature of our product.

nogabebop23··on China would rather see TikTok U.S. close than a forced sale
>> I don't think TikTok, a collection of six-second clips of teens messing around represents a real, material, meaningful threat to freedom and democracy

I guess this is where we agree to disagree. I do think a foreign power with direct and absolute editorial control over the #1 content delivery network of an entire generation of our population is cause for concern.

I'm not discounting your skepticism that there is grandstanding involved, but from your comment I see a dramatic difference between a wanna-be totalitarian in a free democracy and an unequivocal one in a single party state. Let's not let perfect be the enemy of better; while domestic surveillance is unacceptable it is most definitely better than the current situation.

nogabebop23··on Youtube-dlc – Download videos from YouTube or other video platforms
yes - they don't generally access the underlying meta & media directly; they use the well established, stable and YT-prefered method of embeding a video. This doesn't work if you want direct file access to a specific resolution, or format, or audio only for example.
nogabebop23··on Youtube-dlc – Download videos from YouTube or other video platforms
these platforms don't support youtube via a programmatic interface like this (and other libraries). They basically embed videos so the "API" is an http request for the traget url.

YT constantly changes how it masks access to the underlying resources with JS updates that break these libraries. The most frequent updates are to fix this.

nogabebop23··on The technical interview is an ego trip
NOT knowing the internal implementation details of everthing is what has gotten us this far in the first place. You just don't evaluate candidate data structures that often in the vast majority of programming work.
nogabebop23··on The technical interview is an ego trip
you can often give a company a pass for a shitty interview, but you should name & out them for ghosting you as that is a far more systemic problem indicator. When I'm interviewing I want the poeple we don't hire to go away and have good things to say about us because they will tell many people about their experience. Companies that are disrespectful and inconsiderate to the point of just cutting off contact should pay the price.
