noel_gomez··on Launch HN: Serra (YC S23) – Open-core, Python-based dbt alternative
It is likely that these will make it into dbt since there are many dbt users who also use snowflake. The main thing to consider when deciding to some something other than dbt is:

* can you apply software dev best practices, CI/CD etc * is it proprietary or can you use it with other dbs * is there a large community behind it e.g. dbt packages and dbt python libraries * will you also get docs, dq, lineage or will you need additional tools\ing * will you need to orchestrate other aspects of your data flow e.g. EL, then T, then activation, etc

Databricks also has delta live tables and for the reasons above I usually suggest people consider all of these and not just go all-in with one vendor

Are you a dbt developer looking for info on a command or and are you trying to quickly get to the dbt docs as you study for the dbt certification exam.

This handy dbt cheatsheet I created has links to official dbt docs in a simple, organized way.

noel_gomez··on Get started with Ruby on Rails using JRuby and App Engine
I had the opposite experience. Got it to run locally, but failed when deployed.
noel_gomez··on What state should I incorporate in?
If you resides in California, don't you still need to pay CA business taxes?
noel_gomez··on New Yahoo CEO's Open Letter to Fans, Analysts, and Employees
They should start by offering IMAP to all the paying customers of Yahoo Mail. It's amazing that they can do this for iPhone, but not for desktop especially for customers who are paying for this service. Google gives us all this for free.
noel_gomez··on Ask HN: Afraid I've dug myself into a hole
maybe, I can program. more front end than back, but realistically I can't completely do any of my ideas n my own :(
noel_gomez··on Iplotz - balsmiq alternative
I agree with the elements on the left or right instead of the top. More real estate there than top
noel_gomez··on Ask HN: Afraid I've dug myself into a hole
lol, tell me about it, I was just offering to partner up, he helps me build an app from which we could potentially both benefit and he gets the experience he is looking for along the way.
noel_gomez··on Ask HN: Afraid I've dug myself into a hole
I am looking for someone to help me build a web app. I think it may be possible to do by building or extending a module for Drupal. If you are interested I would share my concept and you can see if it is appealing to you. This way you can gain some experience and maybe we can create something great. :)
noel_gomez··on Ask HN: Looking for feedback on side-project
I like it, I too was looking for something like this just the other day.
noel_gomez··on Ask HN: What is the job for a jack-of-all-trades?
I love YC, lots of people like me. LOL
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: Finding a co-founder(s)
I'm in the same boat. I am in Product Management and fairly technically oriented, but I wouldn't call myself a real programmer.

Since I have not found people of like mind I have tried to learn enough to try to do something on my own. But not having built a web service in the past, it's not that easy. I would be happy finding a mentor who could point me in the right direction while I learn.

wonder how many copies have been sold so far
noel_gomez··on ASk HN: Anyone working on hardware for his/her startup?
I want to build a better set top box because everything I have seen is either tied to some service (apple, tivo, netflix), is not polished enough for mass market (too many features in Linux MCE), or is too expensive > $500.

But alas I have no hardware skills so I will have to wait till someone else does it. :-)

noel_gomez··on Awesome Highlighter (YC summer 08)
The bookmarklet does not work for me in Safari 3.1.1 The toolbar shows up and then disappears. Has anyone else tried it in Safari?
noel_gomez··on Ask News.YC: You have an idea for a start-up. Now what?
I am in the same boat as far as being technical goes.(although I have some programming background).

One of my ideas is to create a better networking application. By that I mean a better version of linked-In (which I think is a total waste since those connections at best are mostly superficial).

If you are interested, contact me. (see profile)

noel_gomez··on Ask YC: "Can a 40 year old, married with 3 children, start a start-up?"
I am in the same boat. This year I will turn 35 and have not yet started anything. I think fear has something to do with it and the other is finding the technical talent to help bring ideas to fruition. I am pretty sure that having had work experience will definitely be beneficial.

As far as having a family to support goes, I have 2 kids and I am pretty sure I can't leave my job even though my wife works. That just means I would have to do something part time, which in the end may be better. I read an article where an entrepreneur spoke about the fact that founders will put a lot of energy into their startup and not develop a balanced life from the outset. That only puts you in a mode where work will always consume a lot of your time and you will not be able to break that cycle. At least if you work 2 jobs for a short period of time, you know at some point you will quit one of them.

noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
semigeek, do you mind sharing some of your/your fiancee's experience. You can email me directly at noel AY noelgomez D OT com

I'm interested in how she got things prototyped and even how she sold things into the retail channel.

noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
bkow, do you mind sharing more information about your experience? What you desinged, how you contracted with, etc.? You can email me directly if you with noel AY noelgomez D O T com
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
Yeah, I know this is an issue I need to consider. I have also thought of the whole led based paint debacle which surfaced last year since my idea is for a toy.
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
I am planning on prototyping first even though that may not have been clear.

There is a show in the US called American inventor which sounds similar to Dragon's Den (it probably is the same thing adapted for the US, like American Idol).

I have seen American inventor and you do learn a lot. The biggest lesson is not to spend too much on something which may not sell. I have seen people go on there and state that they have put their life savings or $50,000 to $100,000 on ideas which were not so great.

I have no illusions and tend to be pretty realistic. I think there is potential for my idea, but I would first prototype it and see if there is a market before building 10k units.

noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
I have Chinese friends, maybe need to recruit them for effective communication.
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
Thanks Maximus, I sent you an email, but it bounced I used the maximus gmail address on your profile.

How would you respond to mixmax's post above? (on the cultural differences)

noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
I'm a lone entrepreneur with an idea, don't think I can afford professional design firm. I will check out the MIT and Berkeley courses though.
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
Can you be more specific on the "cultural differences of how to do business." Do you just mean language?
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find manufacturers to outsource to?
great link thanks
noel_gomez··on Ask YC: How do you find people who share a passion to build a company?
I didn't realize that someone had commented on this since it never made it to the RSS feed. I have many ideas, most recently the ones I have are: 1) a new version of a retro toy 2) an extension to salesforce.com (an appExchange app) 3) a better networking application (something better than Linked-in)

I live in Southern California. Thousand Oaks to be precise.

noel_gomez··on Ask YC: Finding a Co-Founder
I agree 100%. I have had several ideas and some people even like them, but in the end I have not been able to find others who share my passion. I am not a developer, but I have some development background and I am a tech geek so I follow trends and have been able to see things coming, but having the business acumen is not enough. Woz needed Jobs and Jobs needed Woz.
