noddy1··on Beyond the boring blockchain bubble
Often the urge is more "Ive made 10x gains on these things! I'll sell them for $15/$150!".
noddy1··on Beyond the boring blockchain bubble
If you understood and saw the promise, why didn't you load up? If you believe Sathoshi's thesis, and believe that the technology can fulfill the stated function, it is kind of a no-brainer to buy a few/a bunch?

In addition, even now, at $3200, the market cap of bitcoin is still only ~50 billion. If you believe it has a good shot of being a superior global reserve currency, then it is still cheap and you should be glad that you can buy it for $3200.

Most people I know who knew about it but did not buy constantly thought it is worth less than the current price, whether that price is $3000 or $30. So they never buy. Your job as an investor/speculator is to guess what something is worth, not just look at a chart going up and wish you got in at sometime in the past. In addition, you need to realise that the people who really do well in any bull market or bubble are people who did stupid or manic things and managed to catch the upside. Sensible people rarely make outlandish returns. If you are a very level-headed, sensible person, you will not make outlandish returns, especially short-term.

Anyone who knows anything about biology or genetics knows that it is absurd that there would be zero phenotypic difference between males and females. There are simply different factors driving each gender's reproductive success, and therefore the XX and XY chromosomal difference will push different traits.

Sociology and anthropology depts can't handle this because they aren't interested in science.

noddy1··on Vermont Medical School Says Goodbye to Lectures
MD here - I remember leaving a lecture theatre after 8 hours of didactic lectures, and I could not remember the topic of any of the lectures other than the one i'd just seen, and I could not remember a single fact from any of them. I persisted with the lectures as that seemed to be what was expected of us, however it generally seemed like lectures are there to suit faculty rather than students.

When it came to actual hardcore study for board and specialty exams, I used 100% active recall testing with flashcards with variable repetition based on performance (Anki mainly). I never had any problems passing anything.

I believe an excellent, underutilized way medicine could be taught would be computer based simulation of emergency dept patient presentations, with the player taking a history, performing an investigation and labs, and making decisions +/- referring patient as appropriate.

noddy1··on The first Bitcoin Cash block has been mined
Coinbase has a lot of issues - they need to raise more VC and hire some support temps to get through the current shitstorm.

My biggest issue with Coinbase is that they claim insured wallets, but actually only insure the 2% of bitcoins stored in their hot wallets. Cold storage is uninsured. If their cold storage gets lost/stolen/hacked, all holders are going to lose 98% of bitcoins. That's not insurance.

"Tali Yaron-Eldar, Israel’s income tax commissioner from 2002 to 2004, in 2007 founded eTrader, a binary options firm that targets Israelis, along with Shay Ben-Asulin, who also co-founded AnyOption, one of Israel’s largest binary options companies with revenues in the tens of millions of dollars. In 2011, Ben-Asulin was indicted by the United States for securities fraud, and last month he was convicted of fraud by an Israeli court for helping an Israeli credit card company, ICC-CAL, illegally clear billions of shekels of charges from porn, binary options and gambling websites, as well as conceal the number of canceled transactions."

AnyOption was bought by invest.com and the customer numbers bragged about in the STOX ico are those of anyoption.

For more information on the anyoption.com scam: https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/www.anyoption.com They seem to have destroyed their reputation by refusing to pay out investor funds. noddy1··on FinCEN Fines BTC-E $110M for Violating Anti-Money Laundering Laws
that's great and all, but is the money going to go to people who lost money in various hacks and raids, or is it going to pad the pockets of US-based regulatory organizations?
noddy1··on Update for customers with Bitcoin stored on Coinbase
one of the issues is that having your currency added to coinbase gives it huge legitimacy. every altcoin would love to be on there.

The most simple way for coinbase to distribute the coins would be if coinbase "listed" the forked coin. They would also be compelled to do this when other coins airdrop based on holdings of BTC (eg. Stellar and Byteball). This would set a precedent resulting in large numbers of ropey forks and altcoins trying to do drops to push coinbase to list them.

noddy1··on Hedge Fund Uses Algae to Reap 21% Return
There are ways to achieve this though - using a martingale betting strategy where you take small, high risk bets and basically keep doubling up until you win or bust, you can achieve the same risk-reward profile on most high risk markets
noddy1··on Brazil to open 860K acres of protected Amazon rainforest to logging, mining, etc
sadly capitalism seems to be an incredibly effective and efficient way to completely destroy the rainforests.

there does not seem to be any solution.
