nod··on Move Fast and Fix Things
This is inspiring reading. One may not actually need the ability to deploy 60 times a day in order to refactor and experiment this effectively, but it's clearly a culture that will keep velocity high for the long-term.
nod··on Move Fast and Fix Things
My read of the article implies that they were running the new method on the side, and comparing the results to the old method that was still running in production. They got to 100% before they actually pulled the lever on what customers would use.

Edit: Ah, I see - talking about the Git bugs, not the differences . I’m actually not surprised that “256 (or a multiple) merge conflicts” was never noticed (or at least root-caused and fixed) by the entire git community.

Wonderful ability to use a large userbase as a giant fuzzer.

nod··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2014)
Tableau Software - http://careers.tableausoftware.com/

Software Engineers: Seattle, WA -- Kirkland, WA -- Menlo Park, CA -- Austin, TX

Sales & Marketing: Those locations plus other offices around the world

Our mission is to help people see and understand their data.

http://www.tableausoftware.com/gartner-magic-quadrant-2014 suggests that we've had a good start so far.

nod··on Getting all your data out of Google Reader
Thanks mihaip!

Worked successfully in Windows CMD for me, without using the \bin shell script:

  cd C:\mihaip-readerisdead
  set PYTHON_HOME=C:\mihaip-readerisdead
  C:\path-to-py27 reader_archive\reader_archive.py --output-directory C:\mystuff
Locked up at 251K out of 253K items for me, though. Restarting... success! Looks like it might have locked up trying to start the "Fetching comments" section on my first try.

Phantom.js does use WebKit+JavaScriptCore, though they were musing about moving to V8: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/phantomj...
nod··on The Atlantic posts sponsored Scientology story, moderates comments
The story has been replaced with: "We have temporarily suspended this advertising campaign pending a review of our policies that govern sponsor content and subsequent comment threads."

There you go, one demonstrable example where complaining on the internet actually had an impact.

nod··on Introducing Contributions
The privacy concern here seems just like the debate over the introduction of Facebook's newsfeed - that information was public, but not _obvious_.
nod··on Typographic effects in canvas
I was hoping to see underline.
nod··on Visual.ly launches social network for data visualizations
I think you might give the title to Swivel, which beat Many Eyes by a couple months. [http://eagereyes.org/criticism/swivel-vs-many-eyes] I'm not sure which one of them lasted longer. [http://eagereyes.org/criticism/the-rise-and-fall-of-swivel] In contrast, Tableau Public headed in the opposite direction from both of those, striving not to be a social network but instead focus on being embedded elsewhere.

I think the number of true viz geeks in the world is dwarfed by the number of people who are interested in particular data. But I'm not even sure that Visual.ly is trying to be anything more than a niche network here.

nod··on Can an Algorithm Write a Better News Story Than a Human Reporter?
The short answer is: No - but they're a heck of a lot cheaper.
nod··on Microsoft shows off universal translator that preserves your voice
(Pet peeve) This is not a universal translator! Until you show me a translator that can learn a new language, you're just building a common multi-language translator.
nod··on Learning from 20 years of personal analytics
The scope and scale of this data is breathtaking! However... it strikes me that the best that he could do with this data was plot it and say "oh, I remember those events". I wouldn't feel like all of that effort was worth it, if I were him. What did it DO for him? Apparently very little.

Thanks to gavinballard for the CSV link.

If you want to see different breakdowns, just download the workbook/software and play with it yourself.

nod··on Introducing Chrome for Android
I'm rather confused that Google seems to be aiming to fragment the browser market for its own platform. I already wasn't looking forward to supporting/testing both Browser and Firefox on Android... Is Google just this disorganized internally?
nod··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (February 2012)
Tableau Software! Seattle, WA or Menlo Park, CA

A visual analysis software company that's becoming a force in the business intelligence world, we're hiring across the spectrum of development. I want to highlight that my team is looking for multiple devs to come work on our sophisticated web application that helps people see and interact with their data in web/mobile browsers.

nod··on 10 billion Android Market downloads and counting
Personally, I think the 10-cent sale is brilliant. 10 cents motivates you to put in your credit card number if you haven't - and then the difference between 10 cents and 99 cents for other apps later is pretty trivial psychologically.

I wonder if they are compensating these partners beyond the 10 cent price?

nod··on The Trouble with Bright Kids
Different people are different distances and difficulties away from their ideal life, but the only way you're really stuck is if you give up. "this year's going to decide my future" is not true. Well, aside from the tautology that every year, every moment decides your future. The noose is a mirage, just as much as the resume/admissions game is. Play the game or don't - but don't let it bind you.
nod··on The Trouble with Bright Kids
Chunky, do you have a role model? A mentor? Whether a PG-type or someone successful in some other dimension, I'd encourage, nay, exhort you, to find and talk with a mentor who can tell you about the world that awaits your beyond your "beach of dreams" and current educational straight-jacket. Please, please don't assume that your smarts are all you need to see your future from your current vantage point.

Many have walked through your dilemma. There are a ton of people here who would help you out. Even me.

nod··on In Microsoft's Shadow, Seattle's Tech Scene Surges
This article only has a few of the biggest names. The real tech scene is somewhat larger: http://www.seattle20.com/startups.aspx

And Fremont is one more unmentioned tech neighborhood: Tableau Software, Ubermind, and Groundspeak wave hi from nextdoor to Impinj, Adobe, Google, and others...

nod··on Introducing Google JS Test
This is for unit-testing in V8 only: no DOM. I'm currently using PhantomJS, which is V8 + Webkit and seems to be a superset of this new "JS Test". I can't see any reason to add JS Test in addition to PhantomJS.
nod··on H1B Salaries in the US
Should have used Tableau Public instead of screen caps.
nod··on Why Facebook becoming new Yahoo?
I think the author goes wrong here: "I think we can all agree that tech companies can be slotted into the following [4] categories"

This opinion does not reflect reality - it seeks to take a messy multidimensional spectrum and collapse it into a nice tidy bundle that can provide a self-satisfying mental model and throw off look-at-me-I'm-so-wise sound-bites.

This is the failure of punditry, and this is why reading this article (and parsing out its underlying assumptions) is not worth your time.

nod··on Should you launch at a conference?
Yes, and this post IS part of the continuing launch publicity he's generating for Trello.
nod··on Harvard's Edward O. Wilson tries to upend biology, again
Re exclusivity: The article portrayed it as a debate over which one is the cause. Does group altruism exist because we desire to help kin, or does kin altruism exist *because we desire to help the group?

Group selection sounds more reasonable (by being more easily implementable at a sub-conscious level) to me.

nod··on America Lacks Meaningful Innovation
1. You are being rude. Don't write anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face.

2. I believe you completely misread the parent's point: that there are only a few technologies that are 100 years old. (Not sure what that means with regards to the 'transformative' argument, but still...)

nod··on JavaScript performance and a Webkit hotspot
That reduces the number of string appends, sure. But it is well known (see either "The Good Parts" or "High Performance Javascript" that appending strings is quadratic in JavaScript, and that the best way to assemble a large, multipart string is arrayOfStrings.join('');

* And by quadratic I mean "copies the whole string every time" such that an append loop is N^2 while a push+join is linear.

nod··on Notice: Experimenting with HN
I love not seeing karma on comments. I've realized that I've made three comments today, where I rarely comment normally (once a week or less). I don't know why, but it takes away the "you'd better write two paragraphs and predict the group-think" feeling that stops me from contributing more.
