noarchy··on Shining a light on the digital dark age
Looks like the article in question is getting the hug of death. But information is being lost in droves even today. Entire YouTube channels can vanish overnight, for various reasons, taking years of content with them. Without any backups floating around out there this stuff is gone forever, and this is assuming we even know about any backups.
noarchy··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
>Much better, because alcohol can be made with any grocery store items (like fruits and bread for example) so nearly impossible to ban, whereas caffeine without coffee beans or tea leaves is going to be extremely challenging.

Don't forget the vast selection of caffeinated pop/soda, energy drinks, etc. You're talking about a wide ban here, as this is one of the world's favourite drugs, covering a very popular array of beverages. If you're daft enough to propose it, I suspect you'd be laughed out of the halls of legislatures.

Regulation of caffeine levels in energy drinks and pop is probably an easier sell, and some jurisdictions already do this.

noarchy··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
>Making a product legal increases its availability, affordability and reach. So, the number of people exposed.

Really, a prohibition argument made with a straight face?

North American governments famously failed to maintain a ban on alcohol. How well do you think they'd fare with trying to ban sales of caffeine, given it's reach is greater (and far more socially-accepted) than alcohol?

noarchy··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
>As unpleasant as these right-wing figures are, do you really think that any of them are truly genocidal or likely to engage in military conquest? (and therefore genuinely worthy of comparison with the Nazis)

Haven't some of them been clamouring for an attack on Mexico recently?

Anyway, there are worse figures than Tucker Carlson on Twitter. Some are outright nazis. Others can name them if they wish, but I won't amplify them here.

noarchy··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
So is this how Elon Musk performs when there is no board of directors or shareholders to rein him in? Because this entire rebranding effort looks like something he woke up and declared on a whim. Zero coordination or planning.
noarchy··on Instant Messenger History: Lessons for the Threads Era of Social Media
>You wouldn't even know its under new management if mainstream media didn't put the agenda in your heads.

Aside from Musk pushing his own tweets in your feed?

noarchy··on Threads Is Now Live
Given that some of us have been on waiting lists for what seems like months, it isn't surprising that Bluesky is short on content.
noarchy··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
I've been on their waiting list for what seems like months at this point. Huge missed opportunity for them, being unable to leverage Twitter's failings.
noarchy··on US Congress doubles down on claims of illegal UFO retrieval programs
>The “non-earth” origin is the smokescreen

Or, is the credulity in the US at such a high point that any sort of conspiracy idea has currency?

noarchy··on Ted Kaczynski has died
I didn't even call you out, yet here you are acting like you've been personally attacked. You weren't. Whatever your fascination with Kaczynski, his manifesto is only of significance because of his terrorism. We're better off that he was found, arrested, and convicted.
noarchy··on Ted Kaczynski has died
>"Innocent until proven guilty" doesn't apply to the fucking Unabomber. Bombing people is kind of his thing. He proved it, what, 16 times?

That won't stop people determined enough to defend him here, and as you can see people will die on that hill.

How many lives were saved due to his arrest? That we will never know, but I suspect the number is not zero.

noarchy··on The entire finance industry will repeat this quote for a thousand years
That may have been the case, but it does not mean that all such uses are 100% identical.
noarchy··on The entire finance industry will repeat this quote for a thousand years
>Would there be confusion?

No, but it would be unusual. You don't hear people using a term like "crypto brothers", for instance. "Bro" carries a different connotation, and it isn't a positive one in this example.

I don't think it is simply an abbreviation in this case.

noarchy··on The entire finance industry will repeat this quote for a thousand years
In day-to-day use, you would not hear people saying "brother", instead. It just doesn't happen. "Bro", in this context, has evolved.
noarchy··on The entire finance industry will repeat this quote for a thousand years
I don't think it is short for anything, the way it is used by some, including the specific context that we're discussing. It has become a distinct term.
noarchy··on Reddit permanently bans account of user advocating Lemmy migration
I doubt it's the devs. It was likely a change of product manager (or something similar) and the desire to impose their vision on things.
noarchy··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
>I didn't die on the hill, I conquered it. ;-)

Not really. They did. But I hope playing pretend moderator was fulfilling for you.

noarchy··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
>You're missing the point, which is that this submission is just the latest in a long string of duplicate submissions, some of which have already been marked [dupe] by the moderators.

Then let the moderators moderate, and you can choose a different hill upon which to die, so to speak.

noarchy··on 'BlackBerry' review: The comedy and tragedy of the innovator's dilemma
BlackBerry eventually relented to such an extent that they developed BBM for Android and iOS. And while it did gain some traction early on in select places, it was way too late to prevent the ship from sinking.
noarchy··on Pixel Tablet
>A textual version of a vocalization of doubt.

Anytime someone opens a sentence in such a way, verbally, it rarely paints them in a positive light. It sounds snarky.

noarchy··on Pixel Tablet
>It's not a filler in this context

What is it supposed to be?

noarchy··on Drug shortages have worsened and may only increase in the future, experts say
Insulin is abused by some bodybuilders as yet another gimmick in the quest for more size. There are likely other such niche uses/abuses, but that's one that came to mind.
noarchy··on Pixel Tablet
>Uhm

So strange to see these fillers typed out on HN and reddit.

>wasn't the Nexus 7 the tablet that literally bricked itself within a year by the storage degrading to floppy speed?

The 2012 version that I owned did precisely that. It was a great device for the time, and it is unfortunate that they discontinued it after just a few iterations.

noarchy··on Classic fountain pens
>What advantages do fountain pens still have over modern gel ballpoints?

Bragging points, perhaps: Aside from the hipster cred (see also: straight razors and pricey shaving products) there is the fact that you have the disposable income to drop hundreds of dollars on this tech. Otherwise there are modern ways to write that I think are superior, and the wide use of other tech suggests that the vast majority have moved on.

noarchy··on Adult-use cannabis delivers $15B in tax revenues
The Court bought into the idea that the ban was valid for public health reasons.

noarchy··on Adult-use cannabis delivers $15B in tax revenues
>I always had high hopes (pardon the pun) that cannabis decriminalization would look similar to homebrew beer culture and we might see a horticulture boom

That idea was killed off here in Quebec, where cannabis is otherwise legal (albeit with monopolized sales). Federal regulations allowed for up to four plants, but Quebec and Manitoba decided to ban that. This ban was challenged all the way to the Supreme Court, which upheld the ban.

noarchy··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
No that was the Emergencies Act.

noarchy··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
You can watch it in action sometimes, with amusing results. Some very active posts do, in fact, vanish from the front page with surprising speed, whereas less-active posts can literally linger for days.
noarchy··on Sounds of Hesitation Are More Than Filler
You'll find people on HN and reddit sometimes using these fillers, like "umm", and I find it is often tinged with a bit of snark.
noarchy··on Seagate hit with $300M penalty for selling sanctioned storage to Huawei
Anytime there is discussion of China here, you can set your watch to the whataboutist replies rather reliably.
