noam_compsci··on Ask HN: I created a news shortening algorithm and am not sure how to utilize it
Do people want this problem solved?

> Yes. Saving time is good. > No, as a news reader I prefer accuracy to speed. As a news reader I care about information coming directly from a source rather than summarised. As a reader I want easy access to a source of information and not have to go through a hoop of using another website/app. As a reader I want to read on mobile/laptop interchangeable and with the same interface. As a reader I want to take in deep knowledge and not summaries. As a reader either I a) read high density articles deeply and do not want a summary or b) read low density articles quickly and do not need a summary.

If so, are there current solutions?

> Yes, see other comments.

If so, are you able to do this cheaper or to a higher quality than the current solutions?

> Find the cost of other services and compare that to the cost you can deliver this solution at scale to actual users. > Find a metric to compare your services accuracy/speed to other peoples solution. > X-axis; quality. Y-axis; cost. Plot all the solutions. Is your cheaper for some level of accuracy than a competitor? That’s promising!

If so, how can you get this packaged to users?

> mobile, web > premium sources and pay walls > reader apps

Just a few stray thoughts. A friend and I worked on something very very similar. Ultimately we stopped as we found that no one really wants to use this and pay for it. It’s “cool engineering” but people like reading just fine. Also tweets exist! You can find summaries easily that are human created and better synthesis.

noam_compsci··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
I don’t think it’s objectively true that 4 blades is a better experience.

For me, and many many others who have tried both, eg in the subreddit for DE shaving, DE is much better for a) your skin and b) getting a close shave.

Your hair doesn’t need 4 blades running across it. It just needs one sharp blade over it.

Fair it may take one or two shaves to “get used” to the new way of shaving but that is only because most people start on 4-blade.

You can get a box of 100 Astra superior platinum double edge blades for £8 on Amazon last time I got them. Something like the Fatip Picolo is a quality razor that will last you 5+ years. It cost me £15 plus shipping.

DE shaving is also better for your skin by a wide margin. It also gives a closer shave. I can’t recommend anything more highly.

However you may get sucked into the rabbit hole and DE shaving can become a hobby and suddenly you have a Muhle SS [1] that cost you £120 together with 100 different shaving soaps that cost £10-20 each and ultra fine ultra thick shave brushes that can cost £80

A while ago - maybe 12 months back - there were lots of rumours that Blender were working with Ubuntu and Canonical to provide “professional support” for Blender LTS. Does anyone know if this came to fruition?
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
Candidly: 1. The kind of companies you are applying to (apart from DoE and I guess Dell) are literally the "best" places in the world to work. You are going up against people with objectively much much better qualifications and experience than you. Aim lower. Life is tough and sometimes certain paths are just shut off for you, permanently. You can point to the one person who is killing it at Google after working as a grocery bagger for 20 years. Thats not going to be you, statistically speaking.

2. You do not seem genuinely interested in any company. You come across like that college student who applies to all the top companies as....they're the top companies. Find what you want to do and apply to do that, no matter where and in what junior position. Look I do not know you but I'd bet a lot of money you took the amazon gig just to say you work at Amazon.

3. You do not seem genuinely interested in the day-to-day job you are going for. Again, if you did, I do not see why you are not applying to do that job at...a local high school, if needed

4. Intern in the role you want. Do it for free for a charity (volunteer). Blog about it. Make YT vids about it. Why do you think speaking to an SVP would even matter? The chances they will give you a shot are slim to none. What did you even say to them? Give me job. I hack?

5. Personally, I appreciate your "spoofing" antics. It shows a bit of daring and networking. I don't think its creepy IMO.

How so? Have you read the article or the glassdoor reviews linked?
noam_compsci··on Notion for everyone
This is exactly what I did. Free student user. When I started working at a new company, and they wanted to modernise internal knowledge tools, I recommended Notion. Fingers crossed it gets traction.
