no_carrier··on Pixel 8 Pro owners complain about display bumps
Since Google doesn't make screens, I don't see how this is their fault?

That article is from 2020. In my opinion, Pixel is the crown jewel of Android.

no_carrier··on Google Drive files suddenly disappeared
I was Googling Pixel Watch 2 carrier availability for the Australian market and ended up on the Google Support thread where someone had asked when certain carriers will get the watch. The "accepted answer" was one of these support volunteers who was based in Europe and all they had done was regurgitated the support article and pretended it was an authoritative answer. They added no value whatsoever and caused the thread to be over thanks to their "accepted answer".

I was confused why someone had wasted their time doing this, so I snooped around a bit. As far as I can tell it's a CV building exercise for some people and nothing more.

no_carrier··on Kubernetes releases ingress2gateway tool for upcoming GA of Gateway API
The problem with IngressRoute is that Helm charts are mostly using Ingress. Luckily, traefik have solved this through the use of annotations, which allows me to avoid using IngressRoute entirely.
no_carrier··on Podman Desktop celebrates 500k downloads
Could this not be achieved by managing your own vm on Apple silicon, if you're that averse to the Podman Desktop GUI?
no_carrier··on Speed Test
Late reply, but this could be due to your browsers handling DNS differently. Both are capable of using DoH (DNS over HTTPS) and using DNS settings independent of the rest of your PC.
no_carrier··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
Same with Material Shell for me. I can no longer live without it.
no_carrier··on Why yewtu.be was down: Data loss after being shut down by Oracle Cloud
> Like even they know YouTube is dying

I'm not sure how you drew that conclusion. Of course Floatplane subscribers get the sponsorships edited out, that's the benefit of being a sponsor.

LTT was worried about their Youtube dependence, so created Floatplane. The fact of the matter is they wouldn't be in existence without Youtube and would probably die, even with Floatplane now existing.

There's no evidence anywhere that Youtube is dying.

no_carrier··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
Agreed, Sync was perfection. It got a little rocky with the redesign, but I think the dev handled it masterfully by rolling back for a bit and taking stock. The re-launch allowed you to configure the UI of the app any way you liked, so you could go for an "old.reddit" style information dense UI if you wanted it.
no_carrier··on Fluent 2 Design System
Why aren't any of the components in the docs interactive like every other framework? That doesn't fill me with confidence.
no_carrier··on Show HN: Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers
> E-paper keeps its content without power

You're thinking of e-ink. e-paper has always been used to describe this type of low power LCD screen. I first came across the terminology with the Pebble watches.

no_carrier··on Experiments in Making Cocktail Ice
Today's your lucky day. There's a guy on YouTube who has been playing around with this at home and various other shapes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnotAvxKhPY
no_carrier··on RIP HTTP
Captive portals can and should have TLS enabled, even if they're internally served, there's nothing stopping you putting on a cert signed by a well known CA.

The way I handle it is I have the captive portal DNS name in public DNS returning a private address. When I order the CA cert from my cert provisioner of choice, I'm able to pass all verification checks. I'd use LetsEncrypt if I could, but good luck getting that going on a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller.

no_carrier··on Reddit will begin charging for access to its API
My thoughts exactly.
no_carrier··on Pytest Tips and Tricks
It looks like a free article to me?
no_carrier··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
This article makes things more complicated than they need to be:

> vi $(find . '/' | fzf): For finding random config files

Instead you can just use:

> vi **<tab>

** is the real gamechanger here. You can use it with ssh, too. I managed about 500 SSH hosts. ssh **<tab> will find hosts via /etc/hosts and .sshconfig

no_carrier··on Doom the Way It Was Meant to Be Played – v1.1 Multi-Monitor [video]
I could've sworn that the copy of Doom on DOS I had back in the 90s supported the monitor angle as a commandline arg. This video says otherwise, but I'll swear black and blue that it was there, and I've never had any special copies of Doom beyond the official (but likely pirated) one.
no_carrier··on "BGP at home": getting a DIA circuit installed at home
If by 'full BGP tables' you mean the entire internet routing table, you don't need that to advertise a network on the internet. You can receive just a default route if you wish and still be able to advertise to any carriers you have a connection with. You won't lose out on any functionality in dual homing or anything like that.
no_carrier··on Is Google’s 20-year search dominance about to end?
Also: - Kubernetes has been incredibly transformative and adopted by all other cloud providers - Golang - the language of choice for a lot of cloud native tools - Flutter - it may not be the incumbent choice but it makes cross platform development a breeze - Google Photos - no other photo platform comes close to it
no_carrier··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Interesting stats, thanks!
no_carrier··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
How much does this make for you?
no_carrier··on My Youtube earnings
Interesting to compare this to SocialBlade, which estimate a range of $55k - $887k per year.
no_carrier··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
> By contrast, iPhone places it in the command center. Pull down from anywhere, click the remote-icon, boom, control your TV. Doesn't even mess with your current app.

It's exactly the same on Android - pull down the notifications shade and click on the TV remote icon.

no_carrier··on maps.google.com now redirects to google.com/maps
I think this change probably has more to do with corporate firewalls than anything else. A lot of corporate internet access isn't set up to MITM the requests (a lot of places are setup for this, but a lot aren't). If they places all their services under google.com as suffixes, places that don't MITM won't have any way of stopping it as all they can see is the request to google.com.
no_carrier··on Tesla has used space characters in internal emails to identify leaks
Interesting... Google caught out Bing stealing search results a number of years before that - https://searchengineland.com/google-bing-is-cheating-copying...

I guess engineers at Google have too short of tenure to actually remember the precedent.

no_carrier··on Regolith Linux
For anyone this may matter to, keep in mind that Regolith doesn't support Wayland (as i3 is for X only). To me that's a deal breaker. It would be nice to see Regolith picking up support for Sway/Wayland instead of i3.
no_carrier··on Airbnb wants to GPS track you also when not using the app
That's exactly how Android works down to the letter.
no_carrier··on Interactive IPA Chart
They're identical in Australian English.
no_carrier··on Linux 5.10
Did you think about having both the laptop and desktop connected via the dock and then using the USB switcher to switch it that way? Then there wouldn't be any messing around with monitor source.

Is that even doable? It's the type of setup I want.

no_carrier··on Eating Thai Fruit Demands Serious Effort but Delivers Sublime Reward
It's actually the other way around. The pre-sliced or non-fresh durian tends to have lost a lot of the odour.

Hotels and public transport in Thailand don't ban it for no reason.

no_carrier··on Twitter tags Trump tweet with fact-checking warning
I don't follow Trump on Twitter but go and look up his feed regularly by Googling 'donald trump twitter'. I always get there by the first result.

This morning? He doesn't seem to be on the front page at all... the first result is for a search done on twitter.con for 'donald trump twitter', the next result is for the POTUS account. I would say this fact checking thing has had a knock on effect to search results.
