nnutter··on MacOS High Sierra
Both. Maybe, more their stuff. Comes installed with nagware for Office and Skype. Advertises their and third party cloud storage. Advertisements on screensaver. All can be disabled/removed. The ad I saw on screensaver was for a video game. Maybe Microsoft was the publisher or something but they definitely weren’t the creator.

Instead of saying “monopoly” just say “enough market lock-in” and people won’t get hung up on the semantics of “monopoly”.
nnutter··on Sears's History Predicts Almost Everything Amazon's Doing
Anecdotally, when I went appliance shopping 8 years ago I went to Sears not Best Buy. When I went tool shopping I preferred the lifetime guarantee of Craftsman. I wasn’t a pre-existing customer. I live within ~30 minutes of three large malls that all seem to be doing well. There is a Sears Hardware store that just closed in the last couple years.

I'm not certain but I think push notifications can also be used "invisibly" to trigger data sync so this could mean limited functionality beyond just receiving "pop-ups".

My perception is also that malware ends up in the Google Play Store with much higher frequency than the App Store. Just do a news search for "Google Play Store malware" and "App Store malware" and compare.

Also, one can sideload apps, if you have a Mac, onto iOS. Obviously, that's not anywhere as integrated but maybe that's a good thing. Heck, maybe Apple even added that so people in China could sideload VPNs. Maybe iOS VPNs are good enough (no root, no TOR?)?

Thanks for explaining one possible method. It could still mean Google is tracking location "without consent". I suppose it depends on whether they use that location data for anything other than Google Photos.

Isn't the issue that the App Store doesn't have a mechanism to redistribute the source in a way that is compliant with the GPL? Is it fair to say Apple prohibits the GPL? Anyway that tried to sell GPL licensed software on the App Store is "breaking the law" so Apple prohibits it? Or is there more to it?

Had to get the 2x so you could get realtime audio! 1x would stutter.

nnutter··on Amazon owns a whole collection of secret brands
Confirmed through several sources that `tag=` links are definitely referral links.
nnutter··on Amazon owns a whole collection of secret brands
How would Amazon know the date you started writing the article?

BSD does not have a patent license clause so if Lior, et al. have a patent on any part of the algorithm then won’t commercial use will still be ambiguous? And even if they don’t it could still be using (infringing) on a patent of a third party. Basically software patents make using any software a risk but possibly more so when you’re using something based on novel ideas.

Edit: GPL and ASL have explicit patent clauses (obviously only applies to patents the software licensor has authority to license).

Even if you save up the money to not be desperate in these situations they still have a very high cost. Say you’re 30 and invest in a big index mutual fund. Having to use these funds means shaving 8x as many months off your retirement.
nnutter··on Dropbox Drops Photo Galleries
For Dropbox? You install the official Linux client. For Google? There are third-party sync products and Gnome can mount it as a network drive but I didn’t mean to imply that I did; I don’t sync Google Drive with Linux.
nnutter··on Dropbox Drops Photo Galleries
Still no Linux client but Gnome can mount your Google Drive much like an NFS or SMB mount.
nnutter··on Dropbox Drops Photo Galleries
Dropbox only dabbled in photos. Despite my desire to support Dropbox both because they pioneered the online synced folder and because they supported Linux I ended up paying Google because Google Photos came out of the gate way ahead of Dropbox’s languishing attempts at photo management/sharing and Google Photos has kept a strong pace.

Didn't this also happen somewhat recently? How can this be prevented? The window could be reduced by actively monitoring mirrors? Could BitTorrent help mitigate this because the torrent file validates data and isn't under the control of the parties?
