nmcfarl··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
My car has this problem, only sometimes it takes a lot longer than two seconds.

The car when started always turns on the radio at the last volume the radio was on at, regardless of whether it was on when the car was turned off.

More than once, I have turned it on, and it was playing at full volume the Sirius FM ads, and would not lower the volume or turn off ( via the other physical buttons) for at least half a minute. I've done some damage to the volume button after that, and I have taken to just getting out of the car until the stereo responds.

nmcfarl··on Anti-recruiter prompt injection attack in LinkedIn profile
I disagree.

Spam does not deserve a polite response, and responding to spam is, in fact, detrimental to the rest of the Internet and rude to the rest of us using it.

So you are being rude when you do respond to spam - and including LinkedIn spam.

nmcfarl··on Tool for Thought (2005)
It certainly does — and I expect anything in this space that gets successfully commercialized will likewise siphon all of your personal data into a large corporation. But then I am a pessimist about these matters.
nmcfarl··on Tool for Thought (2005)
I’ve not tried it but this Obsidian plugin does exactly this to your notes: https://github.com/exoascension/vault-chat/tree/main

I think it’s just a matter of time to scale it to something larger.

nmcfarl··on Sleep habits may have long-term benefits
This is probably a clear metric for our annoying friends who complain that they don’t get high enough quality sleep, but go to bed at 2 and have an alarm set for 7 every day. Sure you may have worked best on 5 hours sleep in college (though probably not), but if you aren’t "feeling well rested after waking up at least five days a week", you might try more sleep.

Some people need this advice, and a clear metric to hit. I’ve known them, and although I failed to make a dent, eventually something did. Maybe it was an article like this.

nmcfarl··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
I’ve got a computer in all of my light switches. There’s a limit to this, but I’m not quite sure where it is.
nmcfarl··on Llama.cpp: Port of Facebook's LLaMA model in C/C++, with Apple Silicon support
I live in eastern Oregon on a property with no cell service.

I use Siri a lot, mainly to add reminders, and sometimes I try to use Siri when I'm out at the greenhouse, which is just past the edge of the mesh network. I would love for those reminders to get added - even if it burnt battery.

And more generally I would love for people writing apps to consider that phones don't always have service - as would my neighbors.

nmcfarl··on Fastbook: Listen to audiobooks faster (2020)
If I could not speed up podcasts, I would not listen to them at all. As a matter fact, before I had access to a podcast player with this feature up I did not listen to them at all.

There’s way too much fluff, even in a good technical podcast (these actually seem to be the ones that neglect all editing, so many speakers are half ‘ums’ or long pauses while they come up with what to say next) and of course the “fun” podcasts are mostly made of fluff and are largely unlistenable at below 2x

nmcfarl··on Fewer people are creating new podcasts these days
I could not get into podcasts until I started listening at 1.5x. That changed everything for me, the information density was finally high enough that they were worth listening to, and over time I upped the speed to 2.5x (mostly). Also I’ve started listening audiobooks faster (though not as fast), and that has greatly increased my consumption of audiobooks, even when measured in hours listened.

If you’ve not tried it I would heartily recommend it - I really didn’t think it would matter before I tried it.

nmcfarl··on A 6.7 inch E-Ink display that pairs with your smartphone
Price does seem to be the problem it's going for $700 + $50 shipping from these guys: https://goodereader.com/blog/product/dasung-link-e-ink-smart...
nmcfarl··on clipboard | sort | clipboard
The example section at the bottom of the page makes it clear that this solves a problem that I did not know I had. I quite dislike copy and paste into the terminal, but the ergonomics of pbcopy and pbpaste of never really worked for me so I muddled through. I thought this was no great loss, but after looking at the examples clearly either need to try them again or just use cb.
nmcfarl··on Cheap Land Colorado: What going off the grid really looks like
> You don't get to live in the middle of nowhere unless you are rich and can afford the upfront cost of hundreds of acres of undeveloped land.

However, this level of rich is pretty obtainable for West Coast programmer. In parts of northeast Oregon an undeveloped acre goes for 1-2K, when you buy a few hundred. And couple hundred acres can be purchased with an on grid, but remote house for under $1 million.

—-

(You probably won’t like the house, and the nice properties mainly sell inside families, and the bank won’t likely give you a mortgage with less than 50% down, and insurance will not be fun. But this is all surmountable.)

nmcfarl··on Show HN: Speed up your site by running JavaScript when the browser is idle
What I’d really like to see on this page is more descriptive text. Mainly a description of what’s actually being done by the library. But also a section on when I should use idle-task over Partytown - https://partytown.builder.io/
nmcfarl··on 75% of the time we spend with our kids in our lifetime will be spent by age 12
There’s 1000 places in this conversation to say this, but I thought here would work. I too had a kid late and do not regret the camping, but wanted to say the no-life is time limited^, or can be if you are lucky.

My kid is now 9, and while a fancy brunch is beyond him, he can do a sit down sushi dinner. We've done a couple of international trips with him, and we've settled into a friend group with similar interests so we are constantly doing camping, backcountry backpacking, and in the winter skiing - all with him and his friends. It is pretty good, and certainly not a no-life.

---

^ And we knew what we wanted, so even though many of the early trips where miserable, the kid can say he’s been backpacking and xc-skiing every year of his life.

nmcfarl··on Show HN: Red Goose – Convert your website to mobile app
It took a little while but I found a page with a side nav bar, and thus a link to the gallery: https://goose.red/gallery
nmcfarl··on I hate telephones (2017)
I live in very rural America, outside of cell coverage and the neighbors turn up all the time to talk. And these are good conversations. There has never been spam or sales or the like that has turned up at my door.

Meanwhile the land line gets about 2 spam messages a day, and 1 real call a month. And being the owner of an LLC seems to mean my cell gets about 5 spam calls a day. The ringers stay off, and I still hate the phone.

nmcfarl··on How to make an IBM 1311 disk drive move around the floor
I have no extensive documentation. Heck I've never mentioned this to anyone that was not in the room at the time, but in 1996 - I did this. With a smaller disk - an 8" disk mounted high in old tower PC (newer than the disk), and some x86 assembler.

This feels like physics to me - I'm not sure why people need extensive documentation to believe that throwing a drive head back and forth would cause a machine to vibrate (in fact even at just 8" those large drive heads make a machine jump and stutter) and if one was lucky do so consistently enough to walk the machine forward.

nmcfarl··on My smart home 2021: A Home Assistant love story
I'm not sure. I love my house, but the lights are insane with a switch under every overhead light, and using smart switches to control them has been so very useful. Generally I control all the lights in a room with 1 smart switch so I don't have to walk across the room to turn on all the lights in the room

My bedroom came with 3 switches in 2 panels across the room from each other, the kids room 2 in 2 locations, bathroom 4 in 1, kitchen 4 in 3, living room 6 in 2, dinning room 2 in 2.

Detailed example: It takes 4 light switches in 3 locations to turn on my kitchen lights:

• 1 panel - 3 sides of the kitchen ceiling lights switch, kitchen recessed lights switch

• separate panel 4 feet away on the other side of a counter - breakfast bar (4th side) ceiling light switch.

• final panel 10 feet to the right, down the breakfast bar counter to turn on the recessed breakfast bar lights.

Is it too much to ask that you circumnavigate the kitchen every morning to turn on the lights to make coffee? No, the previous owners did it every day for 20 some odd years. But do I want to do it? No.

And I certainly think it's progress that I can choose not to.

nmcfarl··on Switching Rich Text Editors, Part 1: Picking Tiptap
The prosemirror based ones are. I suspect the other ones are as well.
nmcfarl··on A pipe operator for JavaScript: introduction and use cases
The example that resonates with me is when the functions have multiple parameters:

    const y = h(1, g(f("world", x, 3 ),true))
    const y = x |> f("world", x, 3) |> g(%, true) |> h(1, %)
nmcfarl··on Apple to enable NFC payments on iPhones via software update
The mechanics of this will be interesting.

Will Apple hide the current role of a merchant account internally, and push cleared payments into your Apple Cash balance? What will the fees be like? And so on.

nmcfarl··on G Suite free edition no longer available starting July 1, 2022
Not the grandparent - but I to have not received an email - and mine terms link does not go there. It goes to this: https://admin.google.com/terms/apps/1/5/en/standard_terms.ht...
nmcfarl··on Why soda bottles have gaps in their threads (2000)
Perhaps for leaf blowers that it's all upside - but for good size chainsaws say something that can drive a 24" bar, electric just isn't available.

I love my electric 18"er, but most all of the ponderosas I have to fell on my property require my 24" gas Husquavarna. And if you look for electric alternatives you find nothing for actually for sale.

nmcfarl··on The Off-Grid Laws of Every State in America
> All it takes is a nosy neighbor to report you (which might even be newcomers to the community), and you'll be surprised how soon they can be a reality.

Or perhaps not, depending on the politics of your Sheriff. In many rural counties where these laws aren't reality it's not because the government doesn't know, it's because it doesn't enforce.

(Of course this same thing happens in cities - just with different laws.)

nmcfarl··on When did we start signing our names to authenticate documents? (2011)
Five years ago I moved to eastern Oregon and I was shocked at the number of checks I had to start writing.

The cleaning service and the car detailing service were cash or check only as was every vendor at the farmers market - which as small operations kind of makes sense.

But so was the propane service, garbage service, the dump - and the electrical utility charged $36 a year to use an E-check (no credit cards accepted).

I wrote a lot of checks.

nmcfarl··on Paddle announces iOS IAP alternative that avoids Apple's 30% fees
I have a very hard time keeping track of when my favorite authors have released a new book, primarily as I do not trust Amazon/Goodreads. And no one else (electronic) can reliably notify me about this. Heck Kobo, Powell's etc, can't even reliably show books by authors they know I read on their websites.

(Also it's hours in a car to the nearest physical new book store.)

nmcfarl··on 112 Gripes About the French
Most US government publications are are public domain: https://www.copyrightlaws.com/copyright-laws-in-u-s-governme...

But determining the copyright status of anything old is really much harder than it should be.

nmcfarl··on Give me /events, not webhooks
I've got an API where an event happens once a month (+/- 2 weeks) for a large percentage of our customers.
nmcfarl··on Over 96% of Apple Users Have Blocked Facebook from Tracking Them
This is not always possible.

At my first job I built a system to track charitable donations by local bank branches for the banks lawyers. I couldn't even understand most of the status drop downs I built as they were just line numbers in IRS forms (eg 1040 13b). The PM on the project was barely doing any better.

But when we were done the lawyers all agreed that it was 1000 times better than the Excel spreadsheet that the lawyers themselves had built and were passing around between offices.

Would it have turned out better if I'd been a tax attorney before taking on the gig, I'm sure. But you can still get results without the deep domain knowledge residing in the programmer's head.

nmcfarl··on Grain: WebAssembly-First Programming Language
I don't know about this suggestion - the linked article gave me a much better idea of the language, and why I would care about it, than the homepage does.
