nla··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
Stopped using them after years. Tried to get a 8TB download and never got any of it back. False sense of security. Was very disappointing.
nla··on Ollaya – Ollama for open-source, Jev-style decision models

nla··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
That should be an RPZ feed!
nla··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
It's actually pretty trivial to block all FB ads -- but a browser plug-in alone won't cut it. FB does a bunch of really annoying break the internet patterns like rotating your session and VIP every 30 seconds -- or less.
nla··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
Freezes rents but not taxes. Landlords take inventory offline. Studios at $5500. 1 beds at $7500. Yea, he's a real genius of his own mind.
nla··on Madison Square Garden compiled a list of activists against facial recognition
In NYC, you can trespass anyone from a private business at any time and for no reason at all.

NY Penal Law § 140.00 says a person in premises open to the public is there with license/privilege unless they defy a lawful order not to enter or remain, personally communicated by the owner or another authorized person.

So, in plain English:

“You have to leave. You are not allowed back.”

The owner does not need to say: “You have to leave because…”

There was a ton of hoopla around this when Radio City and MSG trespassed lawyers that were suing the company and venues.

Everyone was up in arms and nothing happened.

nla··on The intracies of modern camera lens repair (2024)
One of the better teardowns I've seen in some time.
nla··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
No problem, the money will rotate out of the mega corps that do almost nothing into the next generation that is in the process of changing the world!
nla··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
Beautiful work. Reminds me of Twilight on IRIX.
nla··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
Who is the worst actor when it comes to mass surveillance?

Government or big tech?

nla··on Backblaze has stopped backing up OneDrive and Dropbox folders and maybe others
I left them years ago when they wouldn't package a download for restore. Total waste of money and false sense of security.
nla··on Building a CLI for All of Cloudflare
Excellente!
nla··on Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features
This is why you never connected a "smart TV" to the internet. If you disagree, do it and then run a Wireshark analysis. The best option I have found, after trying them all is Apple TV. Least about of telemetry, best picture quality, and very secure.
nla··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
TDS factor 11.
nla··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
Yea, that Sam only does this because, "he loves it." They're not in it for the money.
nla··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
I truly do not understand why anyone thinks serious work can be done with their models, let alone government work. Their models do no hold a candle to Open AI.
nla··on FreeBSD
I'd love for someone to show us an OS (not just a kernel) that is more secure.
nla··on US axes website for reporting human rights abuses by US-armed foreign forces
The Leahy Law requires the U.S. government to facilitate receipt of information about alleged abuses by U.S. supported forces.

The State Department confirms it no longer operates the HRG, but says it is still receiving reports through other direct channels.

I couldn't find any requirement in the law that requires a public website.

NGOs can still submit information through established contacts or by email.

I would think email is a lot easier than a webform.

nla··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I still don't know why anyone would use AWS hosting.
nla··on Gmail will no longer support checking emails from third-party accounts via POP
The Google enshitification continues unabated.
nla··on Kmart's use of facial recognition to tackle refund fraud unlawful
Good to see Kmart back in action.
nla··on [dead]
This will be an interesting case testing Federal supremacy.
nla··on Procedural Island Generation (III)
It's a completely different approach but checkout F. Kenton Musgrave's implementation of multi fractals for terrain generation.

"Texturing & Modeling: A Procedural Approach"

nla··on Claude Code Checkpoints
Git add doesn't work?
nla··on 1910: The year the modern world lost its mind
I just read this to my wife and she spit out her coffee. You nailed it with the anxiety point.
nla··on Six months into congestion pricing, more cars are off the road

nla··on Six months into congestion pricing, more cars are off the road
I am a police officer here and live in Manhattan. Clearly you have non idea what you are talking about.
nla··on Six months into congestion pricing, more cars are off the road
Really? Which neighborhoods are those? What area of NYC do you live in?
nla··on The most otherworldly, mysterious forms of lightning on Earth
Why is there a paywall article on the front of Hacker News?
nla··on Six months into congestion pricing, more cars are off the road
Congestion pricing is manufactured to create a new tax class. First they let over 100k Ubers on the roads where there were only 32k taxis. Then they added bike lanes. Then they added two bus lanes. Then they closed streets. Then they added more bike lanes. Then they added 'floating islands. Then they added 'pedestrian walkways' in the street -- next to the sidewalks. Some avenues are down to one lane. Viola! Congestion. All of the money goes to the bankrupt MTA. The Democrat supermajority in NYS/NYC wins again.
