nkristoffersen··on An On-Device Deep Neural Network for Face Detection
For me the faces function in ios photos has been pretty amazing. Accurately detecting blurry background faces is surprising. I just checked it and it picked out a picture of me where just my nose and part of a cheek is showing! (aviator sunglasses and scarf covering my face).
nkristoffersen··on Bayesian ranking of items with up and downvotes or 5 star ratings (2015)
Or even a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. Less open to interpretation on how the user uses stars. 1 star or 5 star basically.
nkristoffersen··on ACID transactions in a globally distributed database
Much like the Google spanner database. Was at a presentation earlier this month where they went into more detail. Very interesting product!

Isn't README.md the default view? If so, I'd assume you can include as much info about that project as you like in there.
nkristoffersen··on Freelancer.com has ruined my life
I just started learning how to write tests for my APIs. Changed my life! Now when I need to make broad changes I can easily tell what needs to be fixed because my tests cover each end point with multiple success and failure cases. Love it.
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: Server.js – A modern Express alternative
I went from hapi to express simply for the plethora of middleware (specifically passport).
nkristoffersen··on Why Snapchat Spectacles failed
To be fair, the IoT device wasn't sold by Niantic, it was sold by Nintendo. Nintendo dropped the ball on selling the only thing that was really profitable for them around the Pokemon Go fad since they only receive license fees for the characters I believe.
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: Vehicle Detection – using machine learning and computer vision
How about use the PI Camera module instead? No wireless mess and much cheaper than a GoPro. I'm not even sure the GoPro video stream is accessible outside their proprietary app.

There are a lot of tutorials online on developing computer vision with the PI.

However, it sounds like the K.I.S.S. solution for you would be a backup camera or something so you can see whats happening behind you instead of relying on CV (computer vision) especially if you don't have the software chops to take on the CV challenge.

nkristoffersen··on Date/Time Inputs Enabled on Firefox Nightly
The best reason for using native form fields (in my experience) is for the mobile devices. Using some old school Jquery custom JS select input means its a very poor experience for mobile. At least on iOS by using native, I get the Safari mobile dates/select inputs that work much better+smoother than js/css alternatives. Of course this doesn't matter if you don't target mobile with your website/webapp.

I build interfaces for Norwegian web applications pretty often. Why must the date format be Norwegian? Obviously this is just the form field, you shouldn't actually store the data as displayed. I typically store UTC/ISO strings for all dates, but in this case I would store it in whatever format I needed (such as the Norwegian format), regardless of what the format was on the form. Never trust client-side, right?
nkristoffersen··on Alphabet's Sidewalk Labs to turn 800 acres of Toronto into an “internet city”
I'm annoyed Chrome closed the alt-text before I finished reading it.

I do https://www.warbyparker.com/. Actually a fan of the build quality.
nkristoffersen··on Replacing Social Security Numbers Is Harder Than You Think
Aren’t we treating SSN cards like national IDs already? What make national ids not popular politically?
nkristoffersen··on iOS 11's Misleading "Off-Ish" Setting for Radios Is Bad for User Security
You can 3D Touch the settings app which provides shortcuts to both bluetooth settings and wifi settings.
nkristoffersen··on iOS 11's Misleading "Off-Ish" Setting for Radios Is Bad for User Security
You're missing out. 3D Touch is pretty powerful and provides access to more than "Useless Options" now.

Everything lives in the cloud. Once the photo has been uploaded only the preview is stored on your phone. When you tap on the photo or use the photo/video, the phone pulls the full file down from the cloud.

You can set this in the photos setting. You have the option to store all content locally while also backing up everything in th cloud. However, none of my devices have the space for 357GB of photos so I default everything to “optimize local storage”.

nkristoffersen··on Privacy
I have over 30,000 photos/videos in iCloud (357GB). Synced between my MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad.

Works extremely well for me. Set it and forget it.

nkristoffersen··on Privacy
Yup! But what’s cool is the iPhone does all of that locally on the phone instead of on the cloud.

nkristoffersen··on Hewlett Packard Enterprise Is Said to Plan About 5k Job Cuts
They paid for a brand identity not a logo. They are very different things.
nkristoffersen··on Norway tightens IT security to prevent ballot tampering

nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Apple maps vs. Google maps today?
I prefer the design of Apple maps... but as a full-time traveler I need the offline capabilities of Google maps.
nkristoffersen··on GIMP 2.9.6 Released
In this case standard meant industry standard. If you are working in the graphics industry (and web industry in agency world) people will send you psd files ALL the time. If you cannot open it accurately then you work off inaccurate designs and deliver a poor product.

nkristoffersen··on iPad Pro 10.5 for Software Development
Doesn't take much to connect a mechanical keyboard (assuming you meant keyboard not keyword) to an iPad. And the keyboard shortcuts on the iPad are becoming much more powerful.

You can of course connect an external monitor to an iPad, but not a lot of applications are taking advantage of this ability yet (for extended screen space).

But realistically, iPad won't be ready until they support the mouse due to "gorilla arm" as it's called. Getting the iPad to eye level for proper ergonomics require a lot more effort to raise your arm to interact with the screen.

nkristoffersen··on Terminal and shell performance
Same reason I love HN. We don't have to guess what the creator was thinking. They'll tell us :-)
