nkantar··on How America lost its love for the stick shift
I would even understand a higher automatic take rate for the Miata, as it has a broader appeal (based on my guess that more people are willing to drive such a small car if it's also a convertible).

But the 86 siblings are really pretty focused. I love my car, but wonder how those who aren't _really_ into spiriting driving justify it over other excellent options (e.g., GTI) in its price range.

You can use the e-brake as you lift off the clutch pedal and press on the accelerator. With some learning, I'm now pretty OK at it after some 13,000 miles of manual driving total.

I feel the same way.

City traffic commutes and long highway cruises seem to be what most people think of when they think about driving, but it can be so much more than that.

Few things are as fun as a balanced car on twisty mountain roads, and in that recipe the manual transmission is a key ingredient.

nkantar··on How America lost its love for the stick shift
> Take the Subaru BRZ. The popular sports car was once sold only with a manual transmission, but sales are now 90 percent automatic, Fiske estimated.

I find this a bit difficult to believe.

The automatic option has a reputation for being pretty good, but the manual is excellent. It was certainly never even a matter of choice for me, and for the growing number of (BRZ/(GT)86/FR-S) enthusiasts I know.

Yes, I'm in a niche, but so is the car.

I hadn't thought of that, but it sounds like a useful thing to test out. Thanks!

I very much feel like this as well (on both counts), especially about CI.

I'd love to hear any strategies folksight have for coping with this and actually making decisions without looking into every single option, if that's a thing.

nkantar··on Life on the Internet Is Hard When Your Last Name Is 'Butts'
Even accepting your premise as as true (which I don't necessarily), social media isn't the only space in which this problem appears.

The article itself mentions "members of British Parliament [being] blocked from viewing the Sexual Offences Bill they had proposed by a government spam filter"[0] and "the London Horniman museum’s emails [being] flagged because systems thought they meant 'horny man'"[1].

nkantar··on Show HN: I made a tool that made me faster at Git
Seeing a former coworker use Magit in Emacs is what got me to look into the Vim version: https://github.com/jreybert/vimagit

From what I gather it's nowhere near as feature-complete, but it lets me create commits with immense ease and precision.

Fantastic typo! (Or was it intentional?)

For what it's worth, I started using Netlify (https://www.netlify.com/) for my static sites a while ago, and it's been great. Automatic LE support is definitely one of my favorite features.
nkantar··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
I appears to be so—I was unaware of that when I posted my reply.
nkantar··on Why I'm declining funding from Ruby Together
Sidestepping the questionable wording (part of the OP's point is that RubyGems is _not_ funded by Ruby Together), bandwidth and human time are probably far more significant portions of operational cost than hardware.
nkantar··on Designing very large JavaScript applications
Those appear to be be slides from the talk that's the original form of this article.

This doesn't necessarily justify the first slide's presence at the very beginning, but it might explain it.

nkantar··on Extra Technical Obstacles for Facebook Quitters
My guess is they engage with other Facebook users in a more direct and deliberate manner.

I'd wager that's a far less addictive way to use Facebook overall.

nkantar··on My Sony "smart" TV has updated itself and tried to force me to use a new app
Maybe give it a password to a honeypot network of yours?

I realize it's a bad solution, but that might work…unless it's "smart" enough to realize it has no connection and try other networks regardless…

I would like to try this out. :)

Try as I might, I just don't spend enough time actively using Twitter to make it all that interactive, but I'd still like the ability to catch up in a read-only manner.
