njn··on [dead]
First of all, that's a weird goal to have. Children are people. Let them be interested in whatever they want.

Buuuut, if you want them to get into programming, then discourage their computer use, and tell them to go play outside or something. Tell them that Linux is bad. And tell them not to go near the internet, and "whatever you do don't look up SNES emulators on the internet. Don't go to anynowhere.com and get really into Noctis."

This is the most complicated upgrade guide I've ever seen: https://babeljs.io/docs/en/v7-migration
njn··on Non-PhotoRealistic Quake (2002)
I don't know why everyone's saying there are no screenshots. There's one here: https://research.cs.wisc.edu/graphics/Gallery/NPRQuake/sketc...
njn··on San Francisco looks to ban free lunch at tech companies
- Prevent tech companies from asserting bullshit - If you're lucky, they move out - Other businesses can thrive - Even though these rules don't apply to already established companies like twitter and google, can somebody kick them out of SF too? kthx.

don't make an ass out of u and me :P
njn··on San Francisco looks to ban free lunch at tech companies
This would be an excellent move.
njn··on A Commentary on the Sixth Edition Unix Operating System
Amazing. I love this structure.
njn··on I got accidental code execution via glibc?
Well, there is http://news.usethesource.com/
njn··on I’m Dropping Diaspora, This Site Is Now Closed
But don’t destroy the usability of basic fields that are necessary for talking about the user

Allowing more flexibility in the "gender" field is destroying usability? I'd say it's improving usability.

njn··on Life in Text Mode
I used XMonad for a while until I realized how much time I was spending customizing configuration files, tiling layouts, rc files, and whatnot. I like floating window managers, specifically evilwm, because it isn't very configurable or extensible. It just does what I expect, and I don't have to think about it.
njn··on Life in Text Mode
finch's sudo-graphical ncurses interface is a little awkward. I know there's an xmpp plugin for irssi, so that might be nicer if you just use GTalk.
njn··on Life in Text Mode
I have a similar setup, and love evilwm as well. I haven't run into too many key conflicts, though I do mainly use vi instead of emacs, and tmux instead of screen. I start evilwm with "-mask1 mod4 -mask2 mod4" to bind the meta key to the Windows button.

You can do meta-Esc to close those Firefox windows.

njn··on Ask HN: What should I read after "Gödel, Escher, Bach"?
Well, I never read Gödel, Escher, Bach, but Metamagical Themas by the same author had some interesting ideas.
njn··on MapQuest Joins the 21st Century With a New Design
Amazing how it still looks dated compared to Google Maps.
njn··on A game inside a favicon.
It's incredibly slow in Chrome 9 unless I'm in the canvas display.
njn··on Wherein I help you get a good job
I'm from the United States, and I never appreciated this country until I spent a year in Denmark! Socialism seems to be working for the most part, but I don't like the conformist attitude and culture it encourages.
njn··on Prgmr, Xen and Gentoo
Yeah, I just wrote this tutorial here: http://book.xen.prgmr.com/mediawiki/index.php/Gentoo_as_a_Do...

It's still pretty rough but it should help out if you already kinda know what you're doing.

njn··on Tell HN: And my dead itouch rose from the dead
Thanks for the tip, bro!
njn··on SSH Multiplexing & other OpenSSH Tricks
I'm curious why you would want multiple connections to the same host in the first place. Why not use a terminal multiplexer?

Oh cool, an update to the old Seaman game for Dreamcast.
njn··on Craigslist redesigns their homepage
They changed it back to the old version!
njn··on Ask HN: How would you make Emacs do this?
I like sshfs as well, but it seems to perform even slower than scp for me, and way slower than ssh.
njn··on Haiku Project Announces Availability of Haiku R1/Alpha 2
Indeed.. it is a sad state of affairs when GoboLinux ( http://www.gobolinux.org/ ), though innovative, call themselves the alternative Linux distribution. They are one of the few unique Linux distributions, and all they do is redefine the filesystem hierarchy.

There are an abundance of 'niche' distributions (focusing on size, audio support, etc) but none that really attempt new things. Actually, I'm sure there are some more but I haven't heard of them.. please inform me.

But of course, why are we complaining instead of thinking up possibilities of our own?

njn··on Easy Package Creation with CheckInstall
Why not just use make install? Because that doesn't allow you to easily manage the software at a later date.

Eh, I don't mind just installing into my home directory with autotools.

njn··on Gmail vs Pine
I think it's from 2005. The Gmail logo he uses still says 'beta', and he links to this blog entry from 2005: http://www.zeldman.com/daily/0405d.shtml
njn··on How to permanently delete Facebook account
Thanks to all authors for creating a page that has been read 542,011 times.

I would like to see how Facebook's recent developments are affecting their member count.

njn··on When Google Owns You
...What's his point? When Google is down he can't access his Google apps. If these were all desktop apps, they would be unusable when his computer was dead.

To non-geeks, a dead laptop 'owns them', in the sense that they are powerless against it, as much as Google owns Gmail users.
