njharman··on Mystery 'golden egg' found on ocean floor
I had same thought as your first sentence. But you lost me on the second.

Evolution operates by being fit for your environment. If that environment is dominated by ecosystem destroying humans. Adapt or be replaced with life that has.

Most have "opted" to die out. We are currently in the six mass extinction, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction

njharman··on The End of the Googleverse
Blogs are far from dead. Mass appeal is maybe dead. Niches are alive and well. OSR ttrpg blogs paper wargame blogs (fewer) but still more content than I can keep up with.

And niches have always been the strength, the value of the open web. That you and the 14 other people on the planet with same obscure interest can connect.

njharman··on Why the US is one of only a few countries with no paid time off
The floor is all vacation days, not employed.

Still "no time off" is not synonymous with "negotiated time off". I'm arguing with the title being wrong/misleading. Not whether USA should have mandated time off.

njharman··on Why the US is one of only a few countries with no paid time off
I lived and worked US my whole life. I've had lots of paid time off. Probably less than French worker over 30 years. But still infinitely more than "no paid time off".
njharman··on Ask vs. Guess Culture
I'm not spending game night constantly asking all my guests all the possible things (water, caffeine, booze, food, bathroom, chair, cushion, warmer, colder, more light, less light, music, different music, louder music, quieter music, pet my dog, etc, etc, fucking etc). If you want something, YOU ask for it, which is polite.
njharman··on Two years of teaching high school CS
I'm surprised that educators think their goal is to get "more"/"most" students involved in the subject they are teaching.

Lower education's educational goals are to expose students to all the things. So, that they have the opportunity to find out what education (including none/little) and what life they would enjoy. Secondary goals would be to instill a joy of learning, to prep the few that should go to college for it.

njharman··on Our Plan for Python 3.13
> When learning something, when you simply cannot grasp a concept however hard you try, what's the course of action?

Learn by doing, don't learn by studying.

Pick a (hopefully real) problem, solve it using classes. Repeat. Continue repeating. You will either learn what OO is good for, what it is not good for and how you can use it to write better code. Or, learn that programming is not something you can grok.

If you don't have a "real" problem; Then write program to play tic-tac-toe; manage the and display board, take player inputs, detect when game is done (winner or draw).

Then expand it to 8x8 board, then to 3 players. Those changes should be easy with good OO design (lots rewrites, code changes). And probably "harder" with bad OO or no OO design.

btw this is 2nd interview question I and my team used for years.

njharman··on GitHub accused of varying Copilot output to avoid copyright allegations
Depending on language there are ton of style choices. There’s style guides as examples of trivial.

Non trivial include names, comments, logging, error checking, structure, ordering of operations that aren’t sequential.

njharman··on Have you noticed how much shit the internet has become now? (2007)
There's household device linking. One reason, streaming services/smart tvs want you to link phone/stream from phone. And all those services that want your phone number to verify/provide "2 factor". Yeah, they're totally not doing that to link phone and sell for future targeted ads.

There's many other ways devices can be linked, addresses of bills for instance.

njharman··on I bought the only physical encyclopedia still in print
Those features are all much better provided by The Internet. Including finding and ordering a specialized physical book if you need.
njharman··on Programming culture in the late aughts (2022)
> People need to get to work, nobody needs to backpack through Europe

That is why American capitalism/consumerism is bad. Our society would be far, far better served if people exposed themselves to different cultures, beliefs, experienced world first hand instead of through talking head media. If more "found themselves" they'd know life isn't about work and money.

njharman··on Erlang/OTP 26 Highlights
I find C/C++, et al curly brace syntax and semi colon at end of line, maybe; syntax absolutely abhorrent. Erlang reads like a sentence commas, and period at end. There's very little syntax and it makes sense. The problem it is different than what 90% people learned programming on (curly brace languages).

But the hard part of Erlang is OTP / understanding the concepts or rather unlearning the concepts from other programming paradigms.

The marketing and fan hype is exactly same as for other lifestyle companies. Hence you buy these products so you can show and be seen having bought them and receive validation from your perceived peers.
njharman··on Ed Sheeran demonstrates how copyright is destroying musicians
No.

The assumptions you make are incorrect. And even if they were, your conclusion is also incorrect.

Copyright does not require "pleasing". Only that the work have a minimum of human creativity. And courts have rules that is very minimal. Arranging otherwise uncopyrightabable facts can be enough.

Copyrighted works don't have to be unique, but it'll be real hard to prove independent invention.

njharman··on AI’s Instagram Problem
If you think we as a species are all together chased/chasing crypto or AI/LLMs, you really need to step outside of the echo chamber.

> OpenAI, is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users in January

That's 1.3% of the estimated population of our species. It's only 1/3 of US population.

njharman··on The US Supreme Court doesn’t understand the internet
Newsstands, bookstores recommend items. Ones they put on front, at eye level, on the "look at this" table as you walk in. We don't typically hold them liable.

In meatspace we don't generally hold those making recommendations liable for the 3rd party content. We shouldn't online either.

njharman··on Regular Expressions make me feel like a powerful wizard: that's not a good thing
Huh? They just make me feel competent at my career.
njharman··on Buckminster Fuller’s Hall of Mirrors
Other relentless self-promoters, Edison, Jobs, Musk. If you don't have the talent to get many people to listen to you, then you can't change the world (Or, at least have no control over how you change the world which is kind of worse).
njharman··on Don’t teach during code reviews
The post isn't about not teaching during code reviews. It's about not doing it badly, duh? I'm actually shocked at his example. It's obviously bad practice (and just jerk/toxic behavior (don't fucking be coy, EXPLICIT > implicit)). It seems like strawman or cherry picked. I never experienced in 25 years.

Quotes from article

> It’s not bad to “teach” in code reviews

after example of "proper" review

> The learning in this type of comment

Should absolutely "teach" during code reviews. Developers should always be teaching and learning from each other.

It's a Felony to lie to federal agent. Who doesn't know that?

Under 18 U.S.C. § 1001, it's a felony crime to: make a “false statement” to an agent of the > federal government related to a federal matter.
  ...
  A “false statement” can be:
  a material omission.
  a material misrepresentation, or.
  using a fraudulent document.
Proffering a fake id when asked for a real id is clearly using a fraudulent document.
njharman··on An unexpected benefit of unit tests
I learned TDD as a development method. Too many people imagine TDD is about testing.

It's explained right there on the cover Test *Driven* Development. Not a testing method. A development process guided by unit "tests". In quotes as unit tests are at least 51% about forcing you to write small, isolated blocks of code with well defined and simple interfaces. Units. A large percentage of remainder is enabling ruthless refactoring (refactoring being a huge part of TDD's development practice/philosophy) by ensuring you have not violated those interfaces. Only a few percent is actually about having "correct" code.

njharman··on Cruel optimism and lazy pessimism
> think positive, be happy!

This is correct. It is hard to do all the time. But it's a better way to live. Happiness / unhappiness is a choice (depression other mental illnessesses and additions are conditions to be treated, out of scope, it is not "unhappiness").

Think of it this way.

You can be poor, have kids to feed, homeless, whatever. And unhappy.

Or, can be poor, have kids to feed, homeless, whatever. And happy.

You can wallow in self-pity, blame yourself (or others, society) for your situation, be cynical and pessimistic. Or, be happy, see the positives, be optimistic, try and improve your situation.

Because they want to keep the protection, I think called sec 240, from being liable for what others say using their service.
njharman··on The distinction between free speech as a legal right and cultural value
I wouldn't define it as limited to online speech. And most trolling I'm familiar with is calling out asshats and holier than thou types in sarcastic and funny manner.

No definition is as concrete, unmallable, and unchanging as you seem to imagine.

Mainly what does having an expensive, fragile human who requires tons of support (air, water, breaks) and legal liability & regulation offer over a remote or now/soon autonomous machine?

Answer, not enough to be profitable.
