They put Bari Weiss in charge of CBS news. Her only credential is being rabidly zionist. This trait got her blog purchased for 100s of millions of dollars (!!) and then put her in charge of CBS news.

If you want to split hairs between "controlled by Israel" and "controlled by people who's sole interest is supporting Israel", go ahead.

nixon_why69··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
Nah. Dumping means unprofitably sold with subsidies making up the difference.

China cancelled subsidies to BYD this year, and last year, those subsidies were 1/3 of BYD profits. Subsidies helped get them off the ground but they were unit-profitable by the time they got to exporting.

Xiaomi never had subsidies at all, their cars were profitable from launch, with 6 month waitlists to buy. Their export plan is to start with Germany first because they're cocky as hell and the cars are really nice.

I would add that just having a 60-70 hour work week for many jobs means a different lifestyle, even if you're comfortable financially.

Friend of a friend got hukou in Wuhan recently and picked up a crappy job as a convenience store clerk. 10 hrs/day, 3 days off a month. But! She can comfortably live off it in a major city with a studio apt and even save a bit. Doesn't even need roommates.

The US has 3 national credit rating agencies.

One big disconnect the US has with China is that it's a putatively communist state running a hypercapitalist economy. So they frequently do capitalist stuff with that scary word "socialism" attached to it. Like introduce a fleet of pilot credit systems and calling it social credit.

Mix this phenomenon with US high school civics class and a few propagandists and you get the American view of "social credit score".

Yeah, but older rural people in China are often exactly like the post you're responding to, anyways.

Ok, totally true but faith and race are conflated for jews, much more so than muslims or christians. Mizrahi jews aren't called Arab jews, judaism is not a proselitizing religion in general for 5,000 years so of course it has bloodlines rather than converts.

Israel is an ethnostate apartheid system on that conflated definition. After all, religion is almost as hereditary as race.

I guess I don't see the distinction as all that important? Aside from the fact that it would be an all-time troll if 2 million people in Gaza declared that they're Jewish now and applied for aliyah.

nixon_why69··on US Forces Exit Iraq
There it is. Some lives matter and some don't.

Tell me, if we don't care about Shia killing Sunnis, and we definitely don't care about Jews killing Muslims... why should we care about Muslims killing Jews? I'm Christian.

nixon_why69··on US Forces Exit Iraq
Better question: If we don't need to be concerned, why were we involved in the first place?
nixon_why69··on US Forces Exit Iraq
I'm sure that's a great comfort to all the people ISIS killed.
nixon_why69··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
I don't follow? Yes, unintentional conflation but there are arab french as well.
nixon_why69··on US Forces Exit Iraq
We sent arms and aid to the rebel groups in Syria generally because we didn't like Assad, ISIS rose out of those groups.
nixon_why69··on US Forces Exit Iraq
To be fair, we can't blame that on the American intervention in Iraq, it's more properly blamed on American intervention in Syria.
nixon_why69··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
9/11 did happen to us.

Admittedly, this was before social media but back then you didn't get 50% support for gassing anybody.

nixon_why69··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
There are black French and Muslim French.

Yes, there are some Arab Israelis but the vast majority of Arabs under Israeli governance would never be suffered to assimilate, specifically because it would change the ethnic character of the state.

nixon_why69··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Abu Ghraib was a scandal, some people got punished, probably not all of the right ones.

When it came out that Israel was systematically sodomizing detainees with nightsticks, they had protestors come out in favor of the guards. It's still ongoing, all charges have been dropped. Nobody is scandalized by it.

nixon_why69··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
America didn't do things like this after 9/11, we tried to build democracies in a naive way, failed, and got a lot of people killed unnecessarily. Iraq was completely unjustified and based on fabrications.

But we weren't trying to wage war against the entire civilian populations as revenge. That's an entirely different category of crime.

nixon_why69··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Starlink is "networking in space". The compute, power, and heat stories are minor compared to the networking benefits. Different story than making compute cheaper in space.
nixon_why69··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Great comment and I agree with all of it except you're describing an expanded starlink rather than "datacenters in space". There are definitely workloads that benefit from being in space but that's different from being an economical place to put a rack of H200s doing training or inference.

Dissipating that much heat in the first place would be a first, you also need a butt ton of power so maybe you can shade your giant radiators with giant solar panels, but all of this needs to unfold from something launch-packaged.... AND be cheaper than just plugging them in on earth.

nixon_why69··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Different category of doubts. It's unreasonable to say starship can't work in a world where the Saturn V did work.

For datacenters in space to work, they have to solve a bunch of unsolved problems and be more economical than datacenters in earth.

That's part of the culture OP was referencing. Another part is not having ad tech jobs easily available paying 5-10x as much for easier work. A big part of Asian success at hard tech fields is just not having better options.

nixon_why69··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
You can't plausibly be arrested by ICE if you're in the US legally, in theory, but look where we are.

I'm afraid that a paranoid, worst-case, bad faith assumption isn't something we can handwave away anymore.

nixon_why69··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
Ok, that covers you, but there are 100M party members, any Chinese-descended or Chinese-married person in the US probably has a connection to a party member.

"Have you, now or in the past, had contact with a member of Chinese Communist Party?" sounds really scary compared to "Is your uncle a mid-tier director at Huawei?" even though they're describing the same fact.

nixon_why69··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
You're right that there is supposed to be a legal bar for being "directed by" a foreign government, but would you want to gamble on the jury pool setting the bar that high?

Look at the hacker news comment section any time China comes up, and then consider that the average American is considerably less sophisticated.

nixon_why69··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Took them a few tries to even get there, and the senate hasn't even taken it up for consideration. Chuck Schumer wants this war, even though 60% of Americans and like 90% of democrats are against it. He just needs deniability to blame it on Trump.
nixon_why69··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
They haven't voted to stop it, either. We're way past 90 days, it's a choice for congress not to exercise their power.

Schumer could be raising hell and disrupting everything in the senate in order to force a vote, it would be incredibly popular and define the midterms, but he's choosing not to.
