nixdev··on Life is not a story
I was at a music festival in Southern California and had a 5meo-DMT trip. During the trip the vantage point of my consciousness left my body, saw that the universe is a hologram, and time as we experience it is a lower dimension. The human life is a temporary experience and yes it is all just a story.

Correct. DKMS is an automation tool/framework for preparing local Linux kernel modules. DKMS is stable. I write this as someone who has been responsible for commercial support for hardware products used with Linux systems at more than one organization.

I do know there are others out there, paid "professionals" staffed at some vendors, who struggle with DKMS. But not everyone paid to work with DKMS is necessarily competent by virtue of being paid to do a job.

Many distros avoid the problem with something like

  apt-get install libflac7 libflac8
If you look in Fedora 40 for example, you'll find nodejs, nodejs18, and nodejs22. Gentoo's ebuilds (packages) can often have multiple major versions installed simultaneously. If I really need something, I can unpack another Gentoo userland, or use a container.

AppImages, do exist. What seems to be the missing "glue" is putting a ui in front of users to choose what software they want to run. That problem has not yet been solved gracefully.

The author says he knows how to use Linux, but observably never graduated to be a particularly advanced user.

Yeah.. it's rather unfortunate. I am grateful for https://chimera-linux.org/ and https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/OpenRC

LTS distros have "linux-image-newer" packages for where device drivers legitimately need access to a newer kernel.

For all other scenarios, which are most, DKMS has existed for 21 years now.

The Linux distros' approach is superior to Microsoft's in every way. There will always be some Windows-minded types out there who will struggle, maybe they should buy a Mac.
