nix23··on Hector Martin: we care about fixing Linux problems on Asahi
I use Linux since ~25years, and he's totally right.

I cant stand the amateurish "it works here" or "wait your laptop is 8 years old? For sure the new kernel cannot load your nvidia driver" or "yeah that intel wireless card never worked good, buy a atheros card" or "you cant use XFS with that game because of inode64, just use wine or use another filesystem" and and and.

It's a real shitshow, i would never recommend any Linux-distro to anyone if i cant hold that users hand.

nix23··on 3dfx: So powerful it’s kind of ridiculous
Playing Wizardry8 right now (on wine with the glide patches).
nix23··on The SCO lawsuit, 20 years later
Well true but Oracle Linux included DTRACE for more then half a decade.

And canonical includes ZFS, and i think they have more lawyers then you and me.

Do you really think they would take that risk especially with oracle to include ZFS (that is not even their main fs)?

Have some commonsense.

nix23··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
I did that many times since my laptop has no cd reader anymore.
nix23··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
If i where Apple i would completely opensource the PC-Hardware (documentation, firmware etc). I bet ~everyone would buy a M*-Mac, just let the customer install Windows/Linux/BSD. They could wipe out every other laptop producer in one snip.
nix23··on The SCO lawsuit, 20 years later
Oracle itself deploys DTRACE with it's Oracle Linux.

That whole CDDL/GPL incompatibility is BS.

nix23··on The SCO lawsuit, 20 years later
>because as time has been passing, Linux is getting to be an increasingly bad fit for me.

Same for me, i switched about 6 years ago to FreeBSD.

nix23··on The SCO lawsuit, 20 years later
>such a better base for the Linux ecosystem than Linux ever was.

That's so true.

But OmniOS and OpenIndiana still work excellent.

nix23··on Switching to Fedora Silverblue
>packaging a simple CLI app written in C with an easy compile process (and no dependencies other than glibc) was a giant pain in the ass

That's why i love to work with FreeBSD-ports and pkgsrc from netbsd, it's just so easy and the community helps you quite allot if your are in a corner-(case).

nix23··on Ethically Sourced Lena Picture
When i was in the Swiss Military porn was a ~no-go, but we got Playboy for free..and the NZZ and some other papers.
nix23··on The SCO lawsuit, 20 years later
That was Debian and FreeBSD not RH.
nix23··on Ethically Sourced Lena Picture
Pretty sure the Internet's want feet not finger, and yeah butts ;))
nix23··on Ethically Sourced Lena Picture
> Dude, it's literally porn. This is not hard.

You are going to far, i don't think Lenard has anything todo with porn...well maybe the feather is a bit inappropriate for the normal US-Citizen but if you look at your Music-videos i don't think it's too much.

nix23··on Ethically Sourced Lena Picture
It's all about the lights and "well" rounded "objects". But a bavarian belly could do the job as well.
nix23··on Ethically Sourced Lena Picture
First why not Lenard and Second, the picture (the short one) shows her hair and ceiling and not her breasts.

And Third but minor complaint, if we look at the "Full" picture i at least "want" to see his butt.

nix23··on FreeBSD Home Audio Studio
The only person complaining here is you, oh the irony.
nix23··on Bsdutils: Alternative to GNU coreutils using software from FreeBSD
>Yeah. Just look what they got from that.

An absolute great OS?

>hardly any upstream contribution (Apple, Sony, etc)

Sony paid FreeBSD dev's, and the Apple kernel and coreutils are opensource, it's just they have not done anything FreeBSD is interested in, not like for example Netflix with in-kernel tls.

>At this rate BSDs will be deader than dead within a few years.

Yes yes you said that already 20 years ago, it's probably time to overthink it.

nix23··on Bsdutils: Alternative to GNU coreutils using software from FreeBSD

nix23··on ‘Scanners are complicated’: why Gen Z faces workplace ‘tech shame’
Yeah it's not a manual thing (ABBYY FineReader Engine or FlexiCapture SDK) but at home i do it with pdfsandwich:

nix23··on FFmpeg 6.0
Xerox...it was xerox for both.
nix23··on ‘Scanners are complicated’: why Gen Z faces workplace ‘tech shame’
>Few mobile OSes ship with a builtin "Scan" app in the same way that they all have a "Camera" app.

What is the problem? I had many systems where you just send a picture to a email then to a server, there it got OCR'd and converted to a PDF(A) or whatever, then send back to the sender-email as attachment or link and archived.

>my shitty code is preserved in the Artic due to this GitHub project

Look i was just happy that mine was not used in a mars mission ;)

nix23··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
>IP are also constantly changing, at least once a month.

I don't know from where you have that one sided information (maybe you life in a bubble), but my IP changes never until i leave the router powerless for more then 12 hours.

>An ad blocker already eliminates you to 40% of the internet users, which is a lot.

No it's not, but your screen-resolution combined with GPU combined with OS combined with Browser(Version) combined with Cam/Mic combined with ~location is.

nix23··on Very Long-Term Backup (2008)
Why not do it like Github? It's a 1000 years lifespan:

nix23··on Wolfram Language and Mathematica Free on Every Raspberry Pi
>A regular user wouldn’t even understand the things you just said let alone how to do them.

I always giggle when someone says "regular" users use a GNU/Linux-Distro ;)

nix23··on My daughter's school took over my personal Microsoft account
So you think Azure is the only "cloud"-platform that can run windows? I talked about Azure not an OS, this has nothing todo with Windows, DOS or Xenix.
nix23··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
Happy for you that:

1. You trust every ad comes from "google"

2. You think ~everyone/most have ISP-NAT (hint nearly ~no one has it and IPv6 is a thing too (hint 2. those are 38% worldwide))

But you care about uniqueness because of ad-blockers who are used by ~40% of all users, but a IP is "not" unique, nor the browser, OS, resolution and GPU and the combination of all those factors, but NONO the Adblocker is the problem.

nix23··on My daughter's school took over my personal Microsoft account
The real solution is not to use systems who allows that.
nix23··on The toxic tide of ship breaking
>>"The sinking of the aircraft carrier Sao Paulo throws tons of asbestos, mercury, lead and other highly toxic substances into the seabed," Greenpeace said in a statement. It accused Brazil's Navy of neglecting the protection of the oceans.

>>Greenpeace said the sinking violated the Basel Convention, the London Convention on the prevention of marine pollution, and the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants.

Because of that?
