nivethan··on Gains I'm seeing from my second brain tool
This is exactly what I found as well! Writing things down forces me to consume content and makes me want to produce more as a result.

I made my own application as well at https://leftwrite.io though the focus is more on making notes on websites I visit than plain notes.

I'm still working on it but you can see how to use at https://nivethan.dev/devlog/how-to-use-leftwrite.html.

It's still very much still in progress for documentation but the core features I consider complete and so there won't be any functional changes.

nivethan··on Show HN: LeftWrite, a site to slow down and write about what you read
There is no email confirmation so creating a user is all you need to do!

Backstory :) - I am horrible at reading the article first and most of the time on reddit and hn, I go directly to the comments to figure out what my opinion should be. This started bothering me as I was passively consuming content and it wasn't even the content, I was consuming other people's thoughts and pretending they were my own. I originally thought maybe aggregators should gate their comments by having quiz. I wasn't about to make my own aggregator though and I gave up this thought. I instead thought that there should be a notepad feature in the browser that opens on each page that I can write down into. I didn't want to learn a new tech for this so I went the route of creating a site.

The site is pretty simple, it basically gathers up the links on an aggregator site or anywhere really and shows you the article and a notepad. Only once you enter something in the notepad do you get to read the comments. This has worked extremely well for me and I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out. I read far more and I think about things a lot more as well.

HN and specifically the comments is what drives me to get better, there is so much gold here both in the articles submitted and the comments made. By forcing myself to write down my thoughts, there are all sorts of things that I have tried and tested that I would normally skip. I think by adding that writing step, I'm actually processing things instead of pretending to process things.

I'm using the most boring of tech for this site, I use nodejs, express and ejs to do everything as it's what I know. I use nginx as a reverse proxy and postgres for the database. I really optimized for maintainability as I want this to run without me having to do anything. Ideally besides updating packages, I want to do no active work eventually on this.

This site proxies for other sites meaning that the server makes requests for pages on the behalf of the user. Is it worth re-writing the proxy code into rust or is there no real difference between using axios and rust for network requests. How do proxy sites manage this?

Have you done lsd/shrooms before? This almost sounds like you can trigger the after effects yourself.

Really enjoyed this, thank you.
nivethan··on An Immoral, DIY Rape Kit Startup
This is with a cop parked outside and a nurse over a zoom call. These kits are being used as a last resort in the middle of a pandemic. Chain of custody looks to be a problem and it is mentioned in the article.

Is there an average number for the distraction threshold or is each person pretty different?
nivethan··on Is Rust web yet?
Business logic is where Rust would shine and rust feels nicer to work in than java.
nivethan··on Is Rust web yet?
I wrote a tutorial on making a web app and I have some thoughts in general about rust in the final chapter.

For the most part you could replace most things with rust but you'll be rolling your own solutions for things that other frameworks already supply. Actix was great to use and has enough middleware that I feel comfortable using it.

I don't see any reason outside of desire though to use rust and actix, python and flask are basically the same thing but easier to write. Luckily I like the language and it is fun so for now I'll continue using it.

It could be rust will be better once you have business logic where the borrow checker could really shine, just making a simple crud is too much glue work such that any programming language would work.

nivethan··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
Thank you so much! It is very much appreciated and I don’t think I have any cases where I wish it was better. It works exactly like I expect and does what it says on the box.
nivethan··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
For a very long time I didn't use anything besides just plain vim, 2 biggest things to add to your vim use is undodir and YouCompleteMe. Crazy that I didn't have either of these for so long, undodir I wish was part of the default.

This is interesting, would you be able to find something on YouTube that highlights this dexterity? I’m not entirely sure what to look for to see this new way of computing.

Thank you for the book and I can’t wait to get a copy of it! I did the first part in typescript and it’s crazy how much of your java code just works with minimal massaging.

Would you recommend brushing up on C before jumping into the second half, I don’t want to just be copying code and miss the real picture.

Just some a stream of consciousness as I read the book and had my mind blown a few times.

Is there a way around the nested mess in Flutter widgets? I took a stab at a small app but it was basically a new div hell. Besides that however, it was quite neat.
nivethan··on I’ve Consed Every Pair
Well this is certainly the coolest thing I've read today. I've been trying to grok closures and this helps a bit. Is there a reason to not use the global hash table itself to store the state instead of a closure? This seems to be trading a database with memory. This also seems to be harder to interrogate, what if I want to go in and see what's currently outstanding, instead of going to Firebase, I'll need to go through the hash table and check the content of the function.

I think I may be missing something someone who's actually worked with lisp can see, to me closure, recursion and functional programming is cool but I can do everything its showing off using the standard fare of loops and databases.

Thank you the recommendation, it is written quite well and I'm really liking the tone.

Hi, I'm curious how you designed the app? Did you use the existing application as a base and try to duplicate it in the web or was it a completely different beast? Do you have any book recommendations or even blog posts for how to upgrade legacy UI? It's a topic I'd love to dive more into and I don't hear as much success stories as I would like.

nivethan··on The Modern Mind May Be 100k Years Old (2016)
I remember reading about this on reddit and how the idea that there was an explosion of thought 50kya years ago is misleading. This seems to support that idea, I wonder why it hasn't made it's way into the public consciousness yet.

nivethan··on Ask HN: Recommendations for generating pdf/docx reports in code?
We generate html pages and then convert them using wkhtmltopdf. It works pretty well and the simplicity of it is nice.
