nivethan··on IBM AS/400: Databases all the way down (2019) [video]
That sounds pretty cool. I'm guessing you created a transaction block and then executed commands inside it, giving you a way to mess with the system without borking it.That is brilliant and is giving me all sorts of ideas :)

Honestly the best programmers are out here using ED. 0 syntax highlighting and you can only see 40-60 lines at a time. Insanity.

There is a 64bit version of scarletdme in the dev branch and the instructions are the same, it should work on both debian and centos.

Because I'm just a straight nerd for BASIC here are some links!

A quick guide to getting started with scarletdme: https://nivethan.dev/devlog/scarletdme.html

Unfortunately I never ported my editor and shell to scarletdme so this will be UniVerse/UD/D3 specific:

An editor like vim: https://github.com/Krowemoh/eva

A fish like shell: https://github.com/Krowemoh/nsh

scarletdme in the browser(this will be a 500mb download as it runs debian under v86.js): https://nivethan.dev/projects/v86/scarlet.html

This is also very much like the pick operating system, currently the biggest multivalue operating systems are UniVerse, UniData and D3. If you want to try them out, look into scarletdme. The multivalue style is a total mind bend at the beginning!
nivethan··on Space Elevator
He has a newsletter which seems to function as an rss feed. Also his twitter is fun to read!
nivethan··on Ask HN: What are you working on to become a better programmer?
I really like your thought about cutting down the files. I find it’s a really good practice to write and make cheat sheets. This gets me into the habit of removing all the extras and try to get the core idea in a single file.
nivethan··on Sabre/dav: open-source CardDAV, CalDAV and WebDAV server
I've recently gotten into it and I hope it makes a come back. It's pretty cool. I'm currently working to get a sqlite fuse system set up and use with webdav. It'd be very entertaining to simply PUT a file on nginx and have that turn into an insert into a database :)
nivethan··on Becoming the first DevRel at Tailscale
Both Rachel and Xe are people that get at the heart of things. Many of the ideas I’ve had they can put out in words. I think a couple other people that fall into this are Julia Evans and Dan Luu. I think they are HN sweethearts because they verbalize much of what we think rather than saying something new.
nivethan··on Show HN: Koinos Kosmos – News from Around the World
I switched the site to use sme.sk. I'll need to re-evaluate if I do want to use an English site first vs using the most popular site and translating it. The latter will be a better representation.
nivethan··on Show HN: Koinos Kosmos – News from Around the World
Thank you, updated. For Slovakia I used dennikn.sk as the rtvs link didn't seem to have an rss feed.
nivethan··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
There's probably many reasons but one that comes to mind is, if I'm first am I an ambassador for my race now? Probably. The people here might be self selecting in other aspects of their life so they may not actually be around PoC anywhere else.

Another aspect is that I don't have that shared connection or ease of relating to people in the group. The activity has obviously selected for a specific group and there are probably other aspects of their lives that are also different from my own.

Past experience mostly. Trying to make friends where the majority is white was difficult though I was in university and far more awkward then. One on one or in smaller settings, its easier and at work it's relatively straightforward to become friendly with anyone.

nivethan··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
A specific example is if you look at popular sailing channels on youtube. I got into sailing last year and I didn't notice it at first but every popular channel is white. They have events where they meet fans and it's crazy the lack of colour in the group shots. I really wish I hadn't noticed it because it's a bit off putting. It's also surprising that I've only begun to care now that I'm much older.
nivethan··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
2. Hits home for me as I’ve begun to realize the same thing. Not seeing any person of color in an activity makes it’s so I don’t want to be the first.
nivethan··on I shall toil at a reduced volume
My favourite posts from Drew are the following, both taught me so much and it's a sad day that he's going to pull back from writing. He has a way of distilling things to their core that I envy.

nivethan··on Want to learn Linux but scared to damage system
Don’t get caught up in peoples advice. Focus on the web dev stuff and actually get it deployed and try to get actual users. Everything will follow from that. Being told to learn linux is brain dead advice. You’ll learn linux like most people. Learn what you need when you need.

* I speak as someone who used to tell newbie web developers to learn linux and ultimately pushed them away.

nivethan··on Ask HN: What is the coding exercise you use to explore a new language?
I do a plain http server. String munging and sockets are pretty core to everything I do.
nivethan··on I tracked everything I read on the internet for a year
I'm coming up on 3k articles read, probably most of it's all from hn. Jesus I have too much! I use my own app, leftwrite.io to keep track of everything I read and the notes I make. A retrospective might be fun though it'll make it very clear how much of nothing I do.
nivethan··on DBOS: A database-oriented operating system
Yuuup. I currently work on multivalue systems and it is quite fun to think about an alternate reality where pick popped off instead of Linux and sql. Though I do think we are in the better timeline today.

If anyone wants to try out universe which is one of the truly more modern multivalue database, I wrote an installation guide.

https://nivethan.dev/devlog/installing-universe.html

nivethan··on Simple Programming Problems
I would love a less algorithmic set of problems, ideally ones that could highlight and capture the imagination of the common newbie. I think web scraping and getting and keeping track of prices of things is a good one but that usually involves much deeper topics and libraries.
nivethan··on Oberon (2009)
As someone with wide eyed wonder at Bell Labs what languages/OSes would you recommend to get as far away from the unix world?
nivethan··on Filesystem hierarchy standard (2013)
Does anyone have any resources for other operating systems? This might be one of those things that I need to test drive OSes for but it'd be neat to just read about.
nivethan··on Show HN: bashttp - a very (very) simple web server in Bash
I wrote a more complex web server with sessions using bash (really nc is the core)

https://github.com/Krowemoh/bash-server

nivethan··on In defense of simple architectures
Bit late, but is it worth cutting up? Sunk cost I imagine will sting but simplifying might get rid of a lot of the fear.
nivethan··on Ask HN: How do I develop focus?
It definite is for me, I think what's helped is forcing myself to read the article before I go the comments. At least some learning is happening.
nivethan··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
Julia writes so nicely, something about the way she talks about projects and things is so earnest. I have a brag document because of her and it’s helped quite a bit. I have my own list of toy projects and I think it’s good to track them especially to find code examples later!

https://nivethan.dev/projects.html

I really liked writing a http server in bash because I started just to see if I could. I also really like my project to get the top reddit stories from each country.

nivethan··on Write plain text files
I think plain files are great but really I take notes from far too many places and I want to take notes alongside my browsing. Most of what I write is always in response to something but its a response I don't want public. It's a weird zone to be in.

If anyone is looking for a note taking app that's pretty brain dead simple, I made one. This is really more about note taking on websites rather than general note taking. I also like to think by focusing on just the notes and making it feature complete at this point means that it will last for a long time.

https://leftwrite.io

https://leftwrite.io/how-to

One thing I tried to do was make sure everything is exportable and that backups are on you to maintain. This way the data is always in your hands even when its in mine.

Maybe because I'm in the echo chamber but it feels like everyone's looking for some sort of knowledge base system to use. Is this something only devs care about or is everyone on the planet trying to keep their thoughts on hand.

nivethan··on Things you don't need JavaScript for
I actually really like using forms to submit to an iframe on the page. You can set the target attribute on a form to an id of iframe so on form submission, iframe gets reloaded.
nivethan··on Reddit can't build a better search engine
> I question if it's really reflective of what the world is talking about.

I'm very curious what each country is talking about. I made a little script that would show me what each country's subreddit was talking about but, the fact that it is on reddit means that its already biased. Maybe something where you use the the most popular source inside a country would be a way out of the echo chamber but the work in maintaining that I imagine might be a bit much.

nivethan··on Reddit can't build a better search engine
Very cool site! Is there a way to get the words in a list instead of a cloud?

I am interested in what your thoughts are about being in an echo chamber and getting out of it, but this is a great way to get a high level view of whats happening on reddit.

nivethan··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
https://leftwrite.io/

I’m working on a project to focus on reading things and writing more. I found that it helps quite a bit and ill continue working on it as I personally find it rewarding.

The project is in the space of stuff like second brains, and zettlekasten note taking but I think something with a really good ui is needed to make this stuff popular. I went the other way and made it as simple as possible.

I’m using this project to focus on limiting the amount of code I write as I want this working for a long time and I believe that having less code probably helps that goal.

nivethan··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
This is quite interesting and important. Do you have anything I could follow or some literature about the topic? I'm not even sure what to search for as I never thought about alternative modes of communication.
