nitwit005··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Several bathrooms at the openings to hiking trails near me had been smeared with feces. The local newspaper reported someone was caught and taken to a homeless shelter. I remain suspicious that simply resulted in the shelter's bathroom meeting the same fate.
nitwit005··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
Between human languages? The problem will be Google is giving that away for free.
nitwit005··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
> I was presented with art and literature as if it was self-explanatory, and that everything wonderful about it was plainly visible from the outside. But those works were much more like dark, winding caves with treasure stashed inside of them. My teachers were like, “Right, well, into the cave you go!” and I was like “But there’s nothing in there” and they were like “Entering the cave is 30% of your grade” and so I took a few steps into the darkness and I was like “Just as I suspected: an empty cave” and then I came trudging back out and pretended that I saw something.

Doesn't particularly sound like their English teachers are owed an apology.

nitwit005··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Nothing they said suggested they'd be disruptive.

If someone does their work properly, and you're upset at their lack of sociability, you're the problem.

nitwit005··on The Two Factions of C++ (2024)
They seem willing to gradually replace C++ with Rust, but that actually does require C++ to not change in backward incompatible ways. They're depending on a stable ABI when calling into Rust.
nitwit005··on Meta's blockbuster trial draws parallels to big tobacco
Look at video games and you'll see the surface area of "addictive design" is basically infinite. People have gotten addicted to a huge variety of games, with not all that much in common.
nitwit005··on ChatGPT has almost stopped citing Reddit
I'm aware. The age of the data is likely why they stopped showing results.
nitwit005··on ChatGPT has almost stopped citing Reddit
Reddit started charging for access: https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/02/reddit-has-already-booked...
nitwit005··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
The environmental concerns around oil refineries are a huge barrier to construction across much of the world.
nitwit005··on Babies born under sugar rationing grew into adults with lower cancer risk
I became immediately suspicious due to how complex the rationing schemes were.

Even the labels put on food like "margarine" aren't composed of what you'd normally expect, as they shifted to fish/whale oils due to availability.

nitwit005··on On AI regulation and messaging
I'd caution that you just have independent groups in some of these comment sections.

You sometimes see people on reddit amazed that "reddit's opinion seems to have changed". Nothing changed, just a different subgroup. You'll see the other opinion again if you wait for another similar article.

For example, the "did bother reading the article" crowd is attracted to certain headlines, and this probably isn't one of those.

nitwit005··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
My company has an AI tool appending a summary after the human one. As far as I can tell, people aren't reading it.

If people create the PR using something like Claude, you get an AI summary after another AI summary.

nitwit005··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
I suspect there is actually three groups, because the app also has a sort of coupon-ing in it. The lowest price requires you to search the app to find a "deal" that is currently available, rather than just use your loyalty points to get a discount.

One of the ideas of classic coupons was to offer a lower price to the most price sensitive customers. The people willing to deal with the fuss of finding and cutting out the coupons.

nitwit005··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
> Twitter has plenty of leftists.

How, when according to you, they're dominating Reddit and Bsky?

Baring the possibility that people on the left use all the platforms, and people on the right don't for some reason, an excess on one platform has to mean a shortage on another.

nitwit005··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
Neither Bluesky or Threads actually made that pitch.

Threads was started up because of the business opportunity of Musk fumbling things, but Bluesky seemed almost annoyed by all the new users.

nitwit005··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
You choose what you see on Bluesky. I see little politics while using it. If everyone you followed moved over, just limit it to their posts.
nitwit005··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
Consider the ratio of air traffic controllers to the number of people moving through the airport. It's not a huge cost. There's often far more staff moving bags.

It was a problem at very rural airports, and now some people man those remotely.

nitwit005··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
This is just the classic "we're going to crack down, but even harder!".

It's just the behavior of people who have no new ideas for how to solve a problem.

nitwit005··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
> With the changes, people became reluctant to make these transactions, Ornelas said, because they worry it will open them up for government surveillance or targeting by immigration authorities in the current intensified enforcement.

Presumably, because it's hard to get a bank account in a country you aren't supposed to be in.

nitwit005··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
They don't have much of an offering yet. OpenAI has some conventional ads, but everyone expects more involved advertising integrated into the conversation itself somehow.
nitwit005··on A California Program Is Bringing Down the Cost of Heat Pumps by Buying Bulk
Never, not a single time, in the entire history of California, has efficiency ever increased?
nitwit005··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
A number of famous business leaders have admitted they had no idea what they were doing in their memoirs. A few have even suggested that was an advantage.

Everyone running these AI firms is being forced to make educated guesses about the future of the technology and the industry. It's unlikely they're all making accurate predictions.

nitwit005··on A California Program Is Bringing Down the Cost of Heat Pumps by Buying Bulk
That you struggle to believe a government could ever operate modestly more efficiently, doesn't mean it never happens.
nitwit005··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
The problem is deception. People aren't going to check the weight and ingredients label every time they buy a product. A small size decrease won't get caught.
nitwit005··on ChatGPT starts blocking direct requests to copy an author's style
You can generate 10000 different versions of something that might resemble someone's lost work. It's unlikely anyone will want to read any of them.
nitwit005··on Managing AI Coding Costs at Scale
Someone did notice, as they panicked at the cost.

What didn't happen is any analysis of cost/benefit up front. Many of the corporate decisions around AI have seemed characterized by companies blindly copying each other.

nitwit005··on Interviewing Engineers in the AI Era: Lessons from a Year of Rebuilding
My company has tried to produce an AI oriented process, and I just don't see it making sense.

The basic problem is, no one on our side has actually doubted the ability of candidates to us the AI tools in conventional ways.

Consider the design section here. I think we are all confident the candidates can query some AI tool for a design. It's basically copy-pasting the description in. The real goal is to have a discussion, to see if they understand the relevant issues. But then, we could just hand them a design.

It just seems like you waste time having them fiddle with prompts and everyone trying to read the output. Just skip to the discussion.

nitwit005··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
Technically yes, but you can clearly see the growth slow to essentially zero during part of the late Clinton years in that chart.
nitwit005··on Civilians under siege by Mexican cartel fight back with AK-47s, grenades
Maybe after the US annexes Greenland, for some reason.
nitwit005··on I’m leaving OpenAI to build telepathy
Sure, but remember the use case being discussed is interrogation. You have a tool that can collect what someone is trying to type, but they aren't trying to type.

And, my point was, there may be zero words to collect at all, because they'll tend not to be actively thinking about any words.
