nisse72··on Man wearing metallic necklace dies after being sucked into MRI machine
Doesn't even need to be metal: they make sure you aren't touching skin-to-skin anywhere while you are in the machine (for example, don't put your hands together) in order to avoid induced current loop burns.

nisse72··on TimeGuessr
I guessed 2021 for one photo which turned out to be Joe Biden's inauguration fireworks. It tells me I was 20 years off?
nisse72··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
I like the idea but there were several examples where I found a word but it was not the word the game wanted, and I was told "invalid word". Examples: I found "STONE" but the correct word was "NOTES", or "SPILL" vs "PILLS" etc. Extremely frustrating!

You probably also saw the arrows on the road itself as a reminder of the correct direction of travel. Those are always near any places tourists are likely to stop, since after a break it's common to forget which side to be on.

I was surprised by this too! I tried (briefly) to find a source, but it seems to be an urban legend:

nisse72··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
I'm in the same boat, lost my BankID and with it everything it unlocks. I live 20000km from Sweden and can't easily make that trip, especially during the covid travel restrictions. Letters with notarised copies of ID were quickly dismissed by the bank. Hopefully I'll get there next year...

nisse72··on Inside the JVM: Arrays and how they differ from other objects
They do, and it's jarring!

Even though I find memcpy and friends to be perfectly logical using the assignment analogy suggested by thwarted, I often need to re-read english sentences written that way.

nisse72··on IKEA's restaurants were failing, then it turned to Swedish meatballs
I seem to recall they used to serve Scan meatballs (well known Swedish brand) but outsourced to someone else a few years ago as a cost saving measure. Or maybe that was just in Sweden, no idea really.

I used to occasionally visit the IKEA near the Sydney airport to get sweets and biscuits from home, but last time I was there it was all home-brand stuff, not quite the same as I was hoping for.

As for the meatballs, these days I just make my own and freeze them. Homemade are always better anyway.

nisse72··on A YouTuber purposely crashed his plane in California, FAA says
Earlier today I watched a video where someone reported that his medium term youtube income averaged about 15 GBP per 10000 views (based on a couple of million views over a year). That's just about $20 US, or double what the sibling has responded. Both numbers seem reasonable to me, it's likely to be in that range $1-$2 per thousand.

nisse72··on My parents collect cans for a living
Several years ago I worked in a small office with a coke machine, and we would put the empty cans into a bin next to it that the cleaners would (presumably) take away from time to time.

At some point we noticed that the office was becoming infested with fruit flies, and after some investigation we discovered months or years worth of those cans in a closed off hallway, in a dozen giant trash bags.

My manager tossed a couple of the bags into the back of his car and drove to a nearby grocery store where there was a can recyling "machine" outside, that you could feed the cans into and get a receipt to cash in in the store. One. Can. At. A. Time. He spotted some kids skateboarding nearby and said "hey do you want to make some money" and gave them the cans, then made a couple more trips to get the rest of them.

Probably he could have gone inside and spoken to a manager to arrange a more efficient way to offload the cans, but those kids were absolutely stoked.

nisse72··on Octopuses, crabs and lobsters to be recognised as sentient beings under UK law
There is a Swedish expression: nobody is named, and nobody is forgotten.

Usually you hear it in a workplace setting when people (often, a subset of the correct group) are being acknowleged for an acheivement of some kind.

As soon as you try to enumerate all of those groups you will undoubtedly forget someone, who will then take offense at the omission. So the saying is a reminder to not single out anyone.

Aside from this, peak / off-peak pricing is not unusual.

nisse72··on Sydney Residents Will Now Have to Register Their Single Bubble Partner’s Name
I apologize, 2.2 million doses have been administered. Source:

At any rate, my point was not how many are, but how many remain to be vaccinated.

nisse72··on Sydney Residents Will Now Have to Register Their Single Bubble Partner’s Name
April 19: Quarantine free travel opens between NZ and Australia, as both countries are "covid free". Everyone looks forward to holidays and some limited return to travel normality.

May-June-July: NZ pauses quarantine free travel to NZ from some Aus states, resarts for some, pauses again, restarts for others, etc, etc, rinse and repeat, I can't figure out the actual timelines here. Some people are trapped while away and unable to return home.

July 24: NZ says fuck this and stops free travel from all of Australia until they get their shit together.

August: Australia experiences full-on outbreak

Currently about half of NZ is vaccinated, and there is worry we might need to go into another full lockdown if the delta variant arrives, after having virtually no covid in the community for over a year now. For now, I'm happy for the Australians to stay home.

I do wonder about this though: That partner also has to be five kilometres away from where you live.

Did they forget to say "at most"? (or, hmmm, "at least")

nisse72··on A pencil sharpener that creates a never-ending pencil (2015)
Last I checked, Ikea pencils are those stupidly short ones. Now you can take two or three and use this tool to make a full size one!
nisse72··on Common pronunciations of Linux directories, commands, etc. (2017)
Well, as a Swedish speaker I will respectfully disagree with your pronunciation. To my ears the the y is not like the e in me, but I can't think of a good English equivalent.

(in fact, the girls name actually sounds like the greek letter "mu" as it's spelled and pronounced in Swedish)

I've tried this myself and failed.

But I genuinely wonder, why you think this is illegal. I mean, do you think that Apple's T&C are laws? I can't think of anything else that activity would be in violation of.
