nish1500··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
My apologies for the confusion. I contacted malwaredomains.com and got formcrafts.com off the list.
nish1500··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
It's pretty hard to get traction through the plugin repository. I offer mine for sale at codecanyon.net. I feel the repository is good for utility plugins, but well-made, premium plugins should definitely be on a marketplace.
nish1500··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
We do get people using our site for phishing (perks of a freemium model), and, being a small fish, sometimes get the whole domain blocked. Working on the uBlock thing. They haven't replied back.
nish1500··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
I run https://formcrafts.com and http://formcraft-wp.com, and both are profitable, netting over 150k+ a year in total. They were my side projects when I was in accounting school, lol

From grey-hat SEO, to making table-layout sites in Dreamweaver, to trying to emulate double-binding with jQuery before Angular was around, and selling 10k licenses of my personal project in 2+ years. I adapt quick, and truly love what I do.

PS: I am not overtly keen on a PHP position

nish1500··on Ask HN: Canadian visa woes. Should I try Australia?
I went through the same process to get Visa for Canada and the USA, only with more documents.
nish1500··on Ask HN: Canadian visa woes. Should I try Australia?
It says on border.gov.au:

The Business Visitor stream is for people travelling to Australia for a short business visit. This includes making a general business or employment enquiry, negotiations or participating in a conference.

nish1500··on India orders ‘panic button’ for mobile phones in bid to protect women
I am quite sure a much larger number of rapes in India go unreported. Women are discouraged from reporting such cases, specially in rural areas. Most of India is rural. The few which do get reported are probably the ones affecting mid-to-upper class people in cities, or the few brave women who dared.
nish1500··on Online Dating and the Death of the 'Mixed-Attractiveness' Couple
If people were actually looking for what they report in surveys, attractiveness would be half as important, and intelligence twice as much.
nish1500··on Ask HN: How to get Indian team member to North America for 3 months?
Getting Canadian visa would become tricky if someone is turned down for a B1 / B2 visa, but it's worth a shot. He can also re-apply for a US visa.

I am a builder of stuff, and a survivor. From grey-hat SEO, to making table-layout sites in Dreamweaver, to trying to emulate double-binding with jQuery before Angular was around, and selling 10k licenses of my personal project in 2+ years - I have done everything, and learnt my lessons.

nish1500··on Canada’s tech startup sector wants easier access to hire top foreign talent
I've had mixed experience in Canada. Yes, the companies here are traditional and salaries are low, but that isn't all of the market. I have interviewed at a few exciting companies, all of which pay good salaries. Not SV-high, but higher than what Canada is used to.

I'd much rather take a pay cut, than spend 17 years to get residency in a country that doesn't want me.

nish1500··on Atom Reaches 1M Active Monthly Users
Just switched over from Sublime to Atom yesterday. Couldn't be happier. The community around Atom is active, and exciting, much unlike Sublime Text.

I hope subsequent updates make it faster, since ST still has an edge there.

nish1500··on Important Changes to Mandrill
This is absurd. In my case, the monthly price just went up 8X.

Time to explore other options.

nish1500··on How to Fix Tech’s H-1B Problem
I love the Bay Area, and would have loved to work there, but the draconian immigration laws and the 16-year wait for Green Cards are simply not worth it. I'll get paid half as much in Canada, but at least my future doesn't hang on a lottery, and I can start my own company without waiting to turn 40.
nish1500··on Privilege and Inequality in Silicon Valley
I want more than a laid-back life. I already make more than an SF-salary. The opportunities to grow and learn are very little in a developing country. I've learnt more from 2 months spent in SF than I did 5 years in my country.
nish1500··on Privilege and Inequality in Silicon Valley
I grew up other side of the world, amazing by what I heard in the news - that there existed a world beyond mine where smart people with smart ideas built great companies overnight. I am smart. I have merit. I dropped out at 19, taught my self how to code, and built a 6-figure business with my projects online. I want to learn more.

I got turned down by 15+ companies and startups in the past few weeks because they couldn't sponsor my work visa. This is Canada.

The USA? Being a dropout makes me ineligible for any US work visa.

So much for merit.

nish1500··on The mystery of India’s deadly exam scam
I grew up and spent most of my life in Madhya Pradesh. I know some of the people mentioned in the article. I never thought things would get out in the open, and arrests will be made. That was a good sign.

There is more to it. I doubt the practices will stop. The cases will be dismissed, and the accused will walk free soon.

Chief Minister's role in the scandal is downplayed.

Corruption in India is worse than what this article wants you to believe.

nish1500··on Ask HN: I will help your startup in exchange for food and a place to stay
Indian here. I wanted to try for H1B, but after studying the waiting period, conditions under H1B employment, it makes so much sense to go to Canada instead.
nish1500··on Indian Programmer Exposes Code Injection, Gets a Cease and Desist from Injectors
Wow!

I was using the WiFi at the Bangalore or Mumbai airport one day when I realised that half of the websites appeared broken in some way. I looked into the code and realised that the WiFi provider was injecting JavaScript ad codes in all the web pages I was visiting.

I talked to some people about it, but no one seemed perturbed. Such invasions of privacy are a hallmark of Indian companies. Even more perturbing is the lackadaisical attitude of consumers towards such breaches; most them don't think it's wrong.

On a slightly un-related note: India has a national DND registry, for preventing marketers from spamming users' phones. I have filed over a dozen DND complaints and appeals over the last year, with Airtel and Vodafone, against major e-commerce Indian companies. It's amazing the extent to which these operators would go to suppress the issue. None of my complaints were resolved, and I still get spammed. People tell me - It's just a bunch of messages. Ignore them.

nish1500··on Ask HN: What is the most mind blowing book you've ever read?
I am biased towards fiction.

To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. The timeless beauty and innocence of the book remains unparalleled.

Light in August, by William Faulkner. It is the opposite of the above, dealing with complex emotions. Faulkner's prose and characters are unmatched in their depth.

nish1500··on College Dropouts Thrive in Tech
Either the proportion of people with a WSJ subscription, or who up vote the title, is unusually high here.
nish1500··on My Immigration Story
As someone who is new to understand the process, it baffles me to see how incredibly hard it is to immigrate to the US, as an entrepreneur. Some of the biggest new tech companies are founded by immigrants. I often wonder how they got into the country in the first place.

The system rewards those under H1B. There is no provision for entrepreneurs. Being a college dropout entrepreneur, from a non-caucasian country, what chance do I have?

I am reading Peter Thiel's book Zero to One. He talks about hidden injustices in our society. This is what comes to mind.

nish1500··on PayPal penalised for 'deceptive' practices
Stripe isn't available in my country.
nish1500··on PayPal penalised for 'deceptive' practices
I am paying my payment processor 10% - 15% of each transaction in processing and cross border fee, because, I am told:

1. They are small, and don't get good exchange rates 2. My location makes for a long money route, so I pay between 4% - 8% in cross border fee on every transaction

The above fee doesn't even include the final transaction and conversion fee when I withdraw the USD balance to my home currency.

From where I stand, I would be saving 3% - 5%, or more with PayPal, on every transaction. I am willing to take the risk.

nish1500··on Housing.com CEO gives his entire stake to employees
UX of Housing.com is only matched by Cleartrip in India. I have been using their since since years, and do it almost every 1 - 2 months.

It's amazing just how much they iterate. I haven't come across a single bug to date. If anything, it's their inventory I am not satisfied with.
