ninalanyon··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
I think a lot of us outside the US will go further and simply never visit the US ever again. That certainly applies to me despite having spent quite a lot of time in the US and having ex-colleagues who I regard as friends there.
ninalanyon··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
I don't think the movement is "buy local" it's more "buy from people we trust".

> Amazon should somehow be known as the company that sells crap then,

I thought they already did. That's certainly my impression of them.

ninalanyon··on Let's make quality the norm again
> Turns out it is galvanized, not stainless.

So the seller committed a fraud. Did you get your money back?

ninalanyon··on Let's make quality the norm again
Don't you look at the unit price? Price per kg or litre.
ninalanyon··on Let's make quality the norm again
> The trick to making a good deal is a willingness to walk away.

Not just the willingness but the ability to live without if the salesman doesn't cave in. If you need the car (or other goods) now you might not have that luxury.

No idea if they are still as good but Samsonite used to be astonishingly good luggage and good value too. I still have two suitcases from nearly forty years ago. They are very scuffed but still intact and unbroken having survived very harsh airport luggage handling in out of the way places (literally thrown out of planes onto the tarmac). Mostly I use an IT brand [1] suitcase that is much lighter and was much cheaper but it is also holding up well after fifteen years use. The rubber has worn off two of the wheels though.

ninalanyon··on Devil's Arrows: Ancient builders hauled 55k-lb stones 11 miles for UK stone row
I wonder if using pounds exclusively stems from a time when the word ton was potentially ambiguous. In both British Imperial and US Customary one ton means 20 hundredweight (20 cwt) but the hundredweight differs between the two countries, 112 lb in Imperial, 100 lb in US Customary resulting in the US Customary ton being the short ton of 2 000 lb and the Imperial ton being the long ton of 2 240 lb.

Using only lb avoids confusion.

ninalanyon··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
When those in power regard the people as the enemy their natural allies are other governments with similar attitudes. So you don't need to wait until another government gains access, you offer it instead.

> a refreshingly forward looking idea

What?

"a rigorous defense, in which the student explains the topic to their examiners until they are satisfied."

is exactly how PhDs were awarded for hundreds of years.

Even my BSc in Applied Physics (1977) had a viva voce that was a substantial fraction of the final exam.

ninalanyon··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Charles Stross' Accelerando <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerando>

Had AI agents running businesses for the principal character Manfred Macx over twenty years ago.

The first part of the book sounded pretty convincing then although I thought it would take a long time to happen. It sounds even more convincing now and much closer.

ninalanyon··on Operation Smart Kettle – Börzels Blog
So you can't use the app to control the kettle if your internet connection is down. Why doesn't it just run a simple server?
ninalanyon··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
One of the great things about StreetComplete is that it works perfectly offline.
ninalanyon··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
If these tools are as clever as they seem then why not just tell them to rewrite the code in a more review friendly style?

I only dabble in the use of LLMs to generate code for hobby programming (I'm retired from software development) so I don't use any specialised tools.

I almost always have to tell ChatGPT (via Duck AI usually) to rewrite several times even when it has produced a workable script just because it has often used some unnecessarily roundabout way of achieving something. Usually with extra prompting I can get something that is both more efficient and more readable.

ninalanyon··on How the Chorleywood Bread Process transformed British bread
You can get soft bread in Norway that is much like the stuff that is ubiquitous in the UK but it is marketed for making toast. Most of the rest is much more interesting, and I'm sure better for you.
ninalanyon··on Mexican student creates an acoustic fire extinguisher to put out fire in seconds
> i wonder what the point of presenting these inventions as your own are

Because if you independently invented it then it is your own.

The value to the student is not necessarily that the idea is novel to everyone else but that is novel to her. And of course the process of invention and development is something that many people never experience, and is valuable in itself.

ninalanyon··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives

ninalanyon··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
When do you get to see these terms?

The discussion seems to imply that they are seen only after purchase (I haven't read the article).

If that is so they are void and unenforceable in most jurisdictions as you cannot agree to something in a contract that you cannot read.

Are such terms enforceable in the US?

ninalanyon··on I refused to train the AI that could replace me
Hours spent working haven't noticeably declined for people in Northern Europe for fifty years. I worked 40 hours a week in the UK in 1978, the usual working week in Norway now is 37.5 hours.

I very much doubt that most people are greatly more productive, if you can even measure that for most jobs, than they were fifty years ago. Most jobs now are office jobs and service jobs. Much of the purported gains in productivity are soaked up in increased communication effort and in shifting ever more tat.

ninalanyon··on Stopping the Unstoppable: When an unstoppable force meets a dashpot snubber
Dead mans handle devices (driver vigilance units) were introduced on UK trains in the 1960s They also certainly exist on Norwegian locomotives, I've seen them on YouTube videos.

They bring the train to a stop.

ninalanyon··on Stopping the Unstoppable: When an unstoppable force meets a dashpot snubber
Were there no dead man's handles on those trains? Or do they have them and the drivers fall asleep frequently and most were caught in time but these two fell asleep at the latest possible moment?

If your daily life includes interacting with a bank then in many cases you absolutely do need a smartphone many banks no longer have websites that can be accessed with a web browser.
