nimrody··on Palantir raises $680M
Thanks for the video link. This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVsx4I8gkKk is very impressive.
nimrody··on Patent US5443036 – Method of exercising a cat
Brought back memories of Phil Karn (AKA KA9Q) discussing this very patent fifteen years ago:

http://www.ka9q.net/patents/

nimrody··on First chapter of Kernighan and Donovan's new Go book [pdf]
"Typeset by the authors in Minion Pro, Lato, and Consolas, using Go, groff, ghostscript, and a host of other open-source Unix tools. Figures were created in Google Drawings."

groff still going strong... although it seems like Kernighan got tired of drawing using the 'pic' language...

nimrody··on The magic kernel
Right. And the advantages of the Gaussian kernel with respect to image processing:

1. It has no negative coefficients (hence the output will always be a valid color value.)

2. It is circular symmetric, yet separable (X and Y may be filtered independently) -- a property which simplifies the implementation considerably.

nimrody··on Learn to stop using shiny new things and love MySQL
Regarding CLI: mycli and pgcli are both much nicer than the built in alternatives.
nimrody··on Apple's secret NoSQL sauce includes a hefty dose of Cassandra
Can you expand on why Cassandra is not good for analytics? Is that because you have to think of the queries before designing the data model? Or perhaps there are other issues?
nimrody··on Linear Algebra: What matrices are
Gilbert Strang's "The Fundamental Theorem of Linear Algebra" is very well written and expands on the topic of matrices as mappings.
nimrody··on Matlab’s internal memory representation (2012)
The fact that A is updated in-place is an optimization that happens only if you pass a variable and assign the output to the same variable.

It is not a characteristic of the function `plus_diag`. The function itself is completely pure.

nimrody··on Matlab’s internal memory representation (2012)
What Matlab function edits its inputs in-place? I cannot think of any.

Actually Matlab's pass by value is one of its best properties (as a language). This is how functions work in math and is much easier to reason about.

I really dislike Julia's pass by reference semantics. Even if it enables better performance.

nimrody··on Parallel Out-Of-Core Dataframes in Python: Dask and OpenStreetMap
What did you end up using instead of Pandas?
nimrody··on Stronger Shell
Can you recommend a resource for learning powershell? (Assuming one has UNIX background)

[it does generate annoyingly long error messages!]

nimrody··on Learn Chapel in Y minutes
It's a language for high performance computing (HPC). I think it's the only one that survived out of three languages competing at the time: Fortress (Sun), Chapel (Cray), and X10.

See https://www.cs.indiana.edu/~achauhan/Teaching/B629/2010-Fall...

Designed mostly for scientific computing on highly parallel machines. Not your typical web-application development :)

nimrody··on Iran Nuclear Deal Reached
“The people can always be brought to the bidding of their leaders. All you have to do is tell them that they are in danger of being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.” Hermann Goering
nimrody··on Futures for C++11 at Facebook
I guess this should be

     u <- Future(uploadPhoto(p))
right?
nimrody··on Intel Buys Altera for $16.7B
Not sure if this is entirely accurate. Intel's process tend to be optimized towards high performance chips since this is where the big margins are.

I'm not sure they are ready to devote production capacity (and process development resources) towards very lower power products which are also less profitable.

That was one of the reasons they failed when trying to enter the cellular market.

nimrody··on Maud: a fast, safe template engine for Rust
The one thing I like about React's JSX "html in javascript", is that it lets you reuse all of the host language (javascript in React's case) control structures.

Otherwise Maud has to re-implement if/then/else, iterator methods, etc. But perhaps you could use 'if/then' and other structures inside a $() block.

nimrody··on Don't use Hadoop – your data isn't that big (2013)
So do job / company descriptions. A company has to be doing Machine Learning, Big Data, Cloud computing these days to be "buzzword compliant" :)
nimrody··on 32-bit x86 Position Independent Code – It's That Bad
Should be relatively easy to make a tool that uses `losf` or similar to get a list of all running processes that depend on a shared library.
nimrody··on Practical Makefiles, by example
Object files should not be placed in the same directories as source files.
nimrody··on Michael Stonebraker wins Turing Award
Could you recommend something more appropriate for someone who would like to explore the world of database implementations?
nimrody··on Aaron Swartz's Thoughts on djb (2009)
Interesting to read that djb is in favor of automatic exception handling rather than explicitly checking return codes:

"Fortunately, programming languages can—and in some cases do—offer more powerful exception-handling facilities, aborting clearly defined subprograms and in some cases automatically handling error reports. In those languages I would be able to write

    stralloc_cats(&dtline,"\n")
or simply

    dtline += "\n"
without going to extra effort to check for errors. The reduced code volume would eliminate bugs; for example, the bug “if ipme_init() returned -1, qmail-remote would continue” (fixed in qmail 0.92) would not have had a chance to occur."

Contrast this with the explicit error handling promoted by Go (and used in djb's software due to lack of exception handling in C).

nimrody··on Artemis is building a 4G network in SF to prove its pCell tech works
The real problem with this type of technology is that you'll see great performance with a small number of subscribers.

So unless they will be able to get enough subscribers the results will still be questionable.

nimrody··on Ask HN: What is wrong with me?
It's easier to connect when you have something in common.

So my suggestion is that you join some group doing things you like - be it art, music sport or anything else that you like and will introduce you to different people (suggestion: not some technical group).

My personal change came when I joined a sports group (triathlon in my case). I was never a good athlete but I did get a change to meet a lot of new people. Indirectly I have found my wife through that group.

nimrody··on Shellcheck: a static analysis tool for shell scripts
The real problem with shell scripts is that they usually tie together a few external commands and tend to pass information around using the filesystem.

This, together with poor error handling is a recipe for disaster: Problems with permissions, insufficient disk space, etc. Instead of stopping when encountering an error, most shell scripts will happily continue break at some other point in time (or worse - destroy valuable data).

nimrody··on Learn Unix the Hard Way
Kernighan and Pike's "The UNIX programming environment"[1] is still my favorite despite being old and certainly not up to date.

The book teaches the UNIX way of approaching problems with a set of simple tools that complement each other.

nimrody··on Firefox OS Shows Continued Global Growth
What do you do when you want to break the contract? I.e., after 6 months you decide to switch carrier? Now what?
nimrody··on Firefox OS Shows Continued Global Growth
This is probably the price with contract (i.e., it's subsidized by the carrier and the true cost is higher)
nimrody··on Policy – A fork of the Scala compiler
asfq1
nimrody··on Boeing Flies on 99% Ada
No pointers.

Range limited types, e.g.

     Type Day = (0..7);

     Days = (monday,tuesday,wednesday,thursday,friday,
             saturday,sunday);
nimrody··on VersionPress – Version Control Plugin for WordPress
I usually add a commit hook to run 'mysqldump'. Then you get a matching database snapshot along with the source code.

TIP: For better diff's use "--skip-extended-insert --skip-dump-date".

A nice gui on top of that is welcome (although I'm not sure about the $30K).
