nilsbunger··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
Touche! I can't lose :)

EDIT: I guess calling the idea stupid is technically against the HN guidelines, unless I'm actually a ChatGPT? In any case I upvoted you, I thought your comment is funny and insightful.

nilsbunger··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
What if we discover that the real problem is not that ChatGPT is just a fancy auto-complete, but that we are all just a fancy auto-complete (or at least indistinguishable from one).
nilsbunger··on Bay Area plan to ban natural gas
Banning natural gas in new construction seems reasonable and also the biggest win since you don’t have to run pipes to the building.

But existing homes? They definitely need to first figure out the objections in the article:

* supply chain capacity

* cost - we would need subsidies for less affluent people

* time to having heat or hot water again after my furnace / water heater breaks and I’m forced into an emergency switch to electric

nilsbunger··on Database of VC investment announcements
If we train a LLM on this data, which VC firm will it make partner at, and which quartile will its performance be in?
nilsbunger··on GPT3 Is Just Spicy Autocomplete
if you think about it, all humans are just a spicy autocomplete (per the article):

* we regurgitate bullshit we heard

* we aren’t very smart

* we are a threat to democracy by spreading misinformation

It’s kind of true too. All of us take what we’ve learned (our input) and synthesize new things from it (our output). That’s autocomplete

nilsbunger··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
We're hosting a Zoning Holiday party tomorrow in SF at SPUR center to celebrate!

25+ architects for all kinds of firms submitted 5-unit designs to us, and we'll showcase them at the event!

It'll be a fun opportunity to meet likeminded property owners, architects, YIMBY advocates and developers. The event is open to all, just buy a $10 ticket. There will even be kebabs. Check out https://zoningholiday.com

nilsbunger··on Git archive checksums may change
Oh interesting. But if an archive hash isn’t stable, how is it meant to be used? What’s it good for?
nilsbunger··on Git archive checksums may change
This is especially true of something like a git SHA, which is drilled into your head as THE stable hash of your code and git tree at a certain state. It should be expected that lots of tools use it as an identifier -- heck, I've done so myself to confirm which version of a piece of software is deployed on a particular machine, etc.
nilsbunger··on Authentication with Django and Single Page Apps (2020)
I'm pretty sure you should also use CSRF protection in POST requests when you do cookie-based sessions.
nilsbunger··on What happened to Pippin / Rent the Backyard
Rent the Backyard built great-looking ADUs. It seemed like a great product, and got a lot of attention after YC. From the article it looks like the issues of running and capitalizing a factory was what killed them.

Does anyone know where their factory was?

nilsbunger··on JPMorgan to spend $1B on rental homes in the US to become a megalandlord
In most metro areas, zoning is the limiter, not land. You could quickly double the housing supply if you allow townhomes, duplexes, and small apartment buildings in areas currently captive to single family homes.
nilsbunger··on Airport runway names shift with magnetic field
It's a convention for A LOT of aspects of flying: air traffic control instructions ("turn left heading 090"), charts ("fly heading 070 after takeoff"), etc are all in magnetic coordinates.

Planes also a normal compass as their ultimate backup instrument, which of course is also magnetic.

Finally, while modern systems could operate off true north instead, not ALL planes have that.

nilsbunger··on Using ChatGPT to make Bash palatable
Ask ChatGPT! It can write one for you :)
nilsbunger··on Supabase Vault is now in Beta
Fly.io plus Cloudflare have been a great combination for us, and we've added point solutions for other things as needed like email, auth, etc. Feels much more approachable than AWS when you're at a small scale.
nilsbunger··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
It's a significant milestone because demonstrating you can get net energy from the reaction removes a lot of uncertainty of whether it's possible in the real world. It starts to turn inertial fusion into an engineering problem of how you increase the efficiency of each stage.
nilsbunger··on Decision Fatigue
Technical and support teams are needed to keep a site like this running globally. Good examples of the work from an SRE: https://twitter.com/MosquitoCapital/status/15935411779656785...

Other things which aren't necessarily needed to technically keep the code running, but without which you won't have an operating service:

* Sales and account management teams to keep and grow advertiser revenue, and all the support services around them (marketing, integration, etc)

* Moderation teams to keep illegal or dangerous content off the platform, and implement your moderation policy which you need for many reasons including appeal to advertisers

* Abuse teams to respond to the latest DoS / hacking / impersonation / harrassment / etc.

* Legal and ops teams to understand and implement compliance with laws, regulatory filings, etc across 150+ countries, and in some countries like the US, individual state variations.

You tell me how many people you can do this with at the scale of Twitter. I think > 1000 people are a skeleton staff just to keep the lights on.

nilsbunger··on Remix web framework aquired by Shopify
Rewinding earlier, what is the case for VC investment in an open source framework? Usually it's some variation of proprietary extensions ("open core"), enterprise support, and/or hosting. Docker, Red Hat, MongoDB are prominent examples.

So that could also be the rationale for Shopify acquiring it. Alternatively, they could've just wanted to acquihire an excellent team.

nilsbunger··on Office Vacancy Rate in San Francisco Just Hit a New High
Many of them aren't well-suited to it. Everything from plumbing to window coverage is not designed for it. Zoning also doesn't allow it - have you tried to get a zoning change through SF?

Anyway, you can convert some of them, but it's not an easy journey!

nilsbunger··on Tremor – React library to build dashboards fast
Mantine and daisyui come to mind. Mantine isn’t based on tailwind but works fine with it
nilsbunger··on The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
It’s pretty tightly linked. Lots of loans don’t happen when interest rates go up. On the consumer side , car loans, mortgages , etc. on the biz side, capital loans and lines of credit. All of this significantly reduces purchases and money in our pockets, thus putting downward pressure on gdp and demand.
nilsbunger··on The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
It’s not only china zero covid policy. For example , there’s a huge worker shortage in industries like airlines and hospitality. That’s a supply shortage too.
nilsbunger··on The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
We should do everything we can to fix supply issues. The sooner we do, the better.

But in the meantime , demand has to adjust. Either we do it via monetary policy and any other levers, or inflation will do the job for us.

nilsbunger··on The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
Inflation is high because demand exceeds supply. You have to reduce demand to match the available supply. Interest rates are the main tool to do that.

This is true even if the ultimate cause is supply chain issues.

nilsbunger··on Analysis of Apple Watch running data
The trouble acquiring a gps lock could be due to 5G towers (remembering all the controversy with the FAA), or a new building, or something else that changed in the built environment.
nilsbunger··on Show HN: Ezno, a type checker for JavaScript and optimiser for React
What I'd really like is a tsc that creates code to check types at runtime, like for API boundaries and parsing unknown input. Kind of like a built-in Zod. Maybe it's just an automatic type guard anywhere you have an "as SomeType" or an ignore directive.
nilsbunger··on Are You Ready for the Internet? (1994) [video]
That movie showed ip addresses with fields greater than 255!
nilsbunger··on Engine makers sound downbeat on supersonic, leaving Boom in a bind
It's amazing how much of end-to-end travel time is NOT the plane flying. It would be much more cost-effective to optimize everything besides the actual flight time for almost all flights. Things like:

* Airport-to-city travel time

* Airport security time

* Optimize boarding (very straightforward solutions but require passenger education)

* Speeding up taxiing / takeoff sequencing (not sure how but there's gotta be a better way than what we do now)

Each of those are challenging but would be more impactful (and more solvable?) than supersonic flight time!

nilsbunger··on Google loses EU appeal and is fined a record $4B
#2 is the same thing Microsoft got busted for by US antitrust in the late 90s. Microsoft had required computer vendors to NOT sell computers with other OSes (eg Linux). At one point they insisted computer vendors pay for a Windows license on all computers they shipped, even ones shipped without Windows.
nilsbunger··on Super apps are proliferating across emerging markets
Ooh, I like the analogy to family-owned conglomerates. Also not something you see a lot of in the US because of the structure of US finance.
nilsbunger··on Almost half of cancer deaths are caused by smoking, alcohol, or obesity
Congratulations! What clicked for you from reading this book compared to everything else?
