nilsbunger··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
This is a limitation on foreign control of TikTok, not a limitation on speech. TikTok can stay in the us market if it eliminates the foreign control
nilsbunger··on Modern JavaScript for Django developers
This is an excellent article, and SaaS Pegasus is a great solution for people starting a project.

But some of the advice here is dated. The architectural patterns are still valid, but the specifics have changed:

* Vite instead of create-react-app (which is unmaintained now) / webpack / babel / Parcel / etc.

* Django-ninja as a lightweight API service.

I think these are important to call out because they really simplify the frontend compared to the previous options.

It’s been fascinating to watch this play out with the drone stories in NJ too. Despite all our amazing tech, we still can’t tell truth from fiction.

nilsbunger··on 100-MW solar farm just broke ground in Wisconsin
Oh that sounds useful. Basically bypass the grid and just power an ac directly. Do you have any examples of units like this?
nilsbunger··on 100-MW solar farm just broke ground in Wisconsin
In California we pay a lot more for transmission than generation. Is that true in most places ?
nilsbunger··on 100-MW solar farm just broke ground in Wisconsin
It’s hard to wrap your head around how cheap solar is getting. Only get 1/4 as much sunlight? Just deploy 4x the panels!
nilsbunger··on DOJ sues realpage for algorithmic pricing scheme that harms renters
The free market theory still works with the barriers, it’s just that the “excess profits” have to get even higher before someone steps in to build.

What does dual licensing AGPL/MIT do? Isn’t the MIT license more permissive in all cases?
nilsbunger··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
That all makes sense, it sounds like you haven’t ruled out supporting TS directly in production, but it’s complex and you have to move carefully and you’re not sure if you’ll get all the way there. Is that right ?
nilsbunger··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
Could you expand on why transpiling is the right long-term strategy for production? I get that right now you don't support some TS-specific features like enums. Is that the concern? Those seem like a few legacy exceptions, new TS capabilities will be "just javascript".

Not transpiling would be great to reduce toolchain complexity and eliminate the need for sourcemaps just to understand exceptions and debug.

nilsbunger··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
At first I thought that's not a big deal, I could manage that with `nvm`. But I think you're right, you really want it to pick up the project-specific typescript so that you're using ONE version of typescript for type checking, execution, and more.
nilsbunger··on 60-year-old German man likely seventh person to be effectively cured from HIV
I wonder if they can evolve this into an autologous stem cell transplant: take a patient's own bone marrow sample, do the genetic mutation, and insert it back? It avoids the graft-versus-host issues of using stem cells from another person, so it should be reasonably safe (though still a major procedure)
nilsbunger··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
The same thing happened to TCP/IP stacks in the 90s (and multiple alternate transport protocols). They were initially separate products, sold by different companies. Then TCP/IP was bundled into the OS in ~Windows 3.1.

By today's lens you'd say TCP is part of the OS, but this wasn't the state of the world in the early 90s.

If you had disallowed bundling then, we would still be buying separate TCP stacks for our OS!

Love the UI. Good educational tool for founders.

If only building the company and going through all those funding rounds was as easy!

nilsbunger··on Tesla Cybertruck owners who drove 10k miles say range is 164 to 206 miles
The weight of the battery won’t affect the energy needed to keep a car at a steady highway speed. The energy needed is just whatever losses come from friction, air resistance, etc
nilsbunger··on Tesla Cybertruck owners who drove 10k miles say range is 164 to 206 miles
The biggest loss at highway speeds is actually wind. I think wind resistance goes up with the cube of speed.

As a result, electric cars are more efficient in typical city driving. You can see it in the MPG stickers , which are higher in city than highway for EVs

For gas cars, their most efficient speed is typically a steady 35-40 mph. For an electric, it’s 15-20. If there were no wind resistance both these numbers would be substantially higher.

nilsbunger··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
I was wondering the same thing. I’d think these door plugs would be designed the same way as a door, so they can only be removed by pushing them into the plane.
nilsbunger··on California Solar Duck Curve Gets Bigger
I’ve always wondered why the price of electricity on a time-of-use plan doesn’t match this curve. Our electricity is still “peak” pricing in middle of day at the bottom of the duck curve.
nilsbunger··on Plasmic.app: Visual editing and content platform for building websites and apps

Curious why you guys decided to go open-source, and whether that was always the plan.

I didn’t realize that with Pandas 2.0, Pandas-to-Polars conversions can be zero copy if you use Arrow as the data frame format.
nilsbunger··on Show HN: Trains.fyi – a live map of passenger trains in the US and Canada
Note that 50,000 yen is $335. So that’s a ceiling on how much you’ll spend for 7 days of Shinkansen travel.
nilsbunger··on Show HN: Trains.fyi – a live map of passenger trains in the US and Canada
To make this a fair comparison you need to look at the average price per ticket, not the “starting at” price, and include the government subsidies of airports/security/atc/ etc that enable this system.

I would also add in a cost for carbon. I realize that’s more controversial but it seems like we will have to pay to remove co2 at some point.

I don’t know what the numbers look like when you do that.

Regardless, I do agree the amount per traveler to make a train work seems depressingly high.

nilsbunger··on Show HN: Trains.fyi – a live map of passenger trains in the US and Canada
It's sad that even great potential routes like SF->LA aren't accessible by train, and we don't seem to have the state capacity to build HSR there.

I was just in Japan, and took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto, which is a similar distance as SF to LA.

That train:

- runs every 10 minutes -- if you miss one, just take the next one!

- takes 2.5 hours travel time

- starts and ends in city centers on both ends.

- has better legroom and wider seats than economy

- free, fast Wifi on board, your cell signal still works, and you can use your computer the whole trip.

- has no security or boarding hassle. You can show up 5 minutes before departure and just get on.

- has no luggage limitations AFAICT

It's faster and far less stressful than flying SF to LA, with the security and boarding hassles, Ubers on both ends, and cramped onboard conditions.
