nileshtrivedi··on Flutter desktop isn’t there yet
> Flutter is a community project

A quick WHOIS search for flutter.dev and pub.dev domains tells me that this is not really the case.

nileshtrivedi··on I’m now a full-time professional open source maintainer
> any person or company that has ever incidentally done anything with cryptocurrency

But Filecoin IS a cryptocurrency. It's not merely "incidental".

nileshtrivedi··on An AI lawyer was set to argue in court – real lawyers shut it down
AI doesn't need accountability, people who deploy AI do.
nileshtrivedi··on Buy hi-resolution satellite images of any place on earth
What I'd like is to have this image then be uploaded in Google Maps' satelite layer for everyone's benefit. Or OpenStreetMap for that matter.
nileshtrivedi··on The Pretty Good House
If the agent insures the quality and is contractually bound to pay all expenses for repair and maintenance, that could avoid a major chunk of the principal-agent problem.
nileshtrivedi··on NanoGPT
> we're not talking of Google or Facebook investing a chunk of their billions cash

OpenAI had raised $1B from Microsoft in 2019 and used it to train a 175B param model. Now, they have raised $10B and are training GPT-4 with 1.5T params. GPUs are capital intensive and as long as there are returns to bigger models, that's exactly where things will go.

nileshtrivedi··on HTML with Superpowers: An Introduction to Web Components
VueJS actually fails some advanced tests for WebComponents: https://custom-elements-everywhere.com/

So, VueJS docs are actually incorrect when they say it scores 100%. The actual score is 91%.

I had reported this 8 months ago.

nileshtrivedi··on Wolfram Alpha and ChatGPT
Mathematica is available for free on RaspbianOS. You should be able to run it in a VM anywhere.

Both Excel and Google sheets have recently acquired the ability to create named functions (lambdas). So, the gap has suddenly reduced drastically: https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2022/08/named-functi...
nileshtrivedi··on Show HN: Pole Clock, a single 24h clock with multiple timezones
The minute-hand seems to be buggy. It seems to take its 0 as top even though the 0 for hours is at bottom. So when I choose midnight-on-top option, it flips and 00:45 time shows the minute-hand in due-east which is completely wrong.

Would also love to see an option to highlight working hours (9am to 5pm?). Those are important markers for most individuals.

nileshtrivedi··on Show HN: Pole Clock, a single 24h clock with multiple timezones
23:59, 1:00:00, 1:00:01 would have been better.
nileshtrivedi··on Why Solana was decimated by Bankman-Fried’s downfall
I looked at the Solana ecosystem when people started claiming its strong performance and scalability aspects. It was remarkable how difficult it was to find the identities of actual people behind Solana, Phantom, Serum etc, even though Solana is a VC-funded chain. Personally, I would never put money in any project where the team does not even put their identity & reputation at risk. But in those times, lots of people did exactly that.

nileshtrivedi··on Go and SQLite in the Cloud
AFAIK, Datasette only offers read-only APIs.
nileshtrivedi··on Go and SQLite in the Cloud
I'd like to avoid writing boilerplate CRUD code. Is there an equivalent of PostgREST but for SQLite? Essentially, a standard binary would read the schema metadata, and generate standard CRUD APIs: https://postgrest.org/en/stable/api.html

The APIs can even support authentication and authorization with the help of JWT tokens. SQLite may not have row-level security, but even a convention (eg: if a row has user_id column, the JWT must have the same user_id value to get access to a row) would go a long way.

nileshtrivedi··on But, aren't you folks web2?
Some challenges arising out of human-meaningful names that any registry of names needs to tackle:

- Inclusivity for future generations. Early adopters should not crowd out late adopters of all the desirable names

- Community ownership or geographical indications or false advertising (eg: DarjeelingTea.com should only be owned collectively by farmers in that particular region)

- Prevention of abuse or trademark violations (eg: Nestly should be able to sue and win the case on merit against somebody who registers nestlekillsbabies.com)

nileshtrivedi··on Dfk-ap: A debugging tool for ActivityPub developers
Looks useful. Just today, I ended up making a simple testsuite using Insomnia's request chaining feature: https://github.com/nileshtrivedi/activitypub-testsuite
nileshtrivedi··on Democratizing social media, with the freedom of moving around platforms freely
abc@xyz.com is definitely not taken for email. It works as a HTTP url, or SSH logins and it can very well work for ActivityPub.
nileshtrivedi··on Mastodon v4.0.0 Release Candidate
Pleroma still requires PostgreSQL which is an overkill for individuals/families. Instead try GoToSocial which is just a golang binary + sqlite db file: https://gotosocial.org/

nileshtrivedi··on Show HN: Grapher – Visual editor for compound graph datasets
Compound graphs are those graphs where nodes can also be nested inside each other. Many real-world graphs tend to be compound graphs. While tools like CytoscapeJS can render them using automatic layout algorithms, not many tools exist to manually lay out such graphs AND add/modify custom properties for nodes and edges. I needed such a tool to be able to draw curriculum maps, and discovered that SvelteJS had excellent support for SVG components. That's when I decided to make this tool.

This tool is currently also being used by Foresight Institute for their civilizational tech trees: https://foresight.org/tech-tree/

nileshtrivedi··on Auth0 Verifiable Credentials
There's also the possibility that cheapboozeforstudents and statestudentaid.gov are colluding - either directly or because of corrupt employees - against the ID holder. We have seen examples where banks issued loans in user's name against fake IDs/applications.
nileshtrivedi··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
Marketplaces are only for distribution. It absolutely does not require separate codebases or builds, the same way a .exe installer can be made available on 100s of websites.
nileshtrivedi··on Introducing Svelte, and Comparing Svelte with React and Vue (2021)
I loved using Svelte for these two open-source projects but haven't yet an opportunity to use it at work:

- An SVG-based graph dataset editor: https://codeberg.org/nilesh/grapher

- A curated collection of educational resources: https://github.com/learn-awesome/learndb

Compared to React, developing with Svelte felt like a breath of fresh air.

nileshtrivedi··on Build a simple 2D physics engine for JavaScript games (2012)
I'm not qualified enough to answer your question. What I understand is that PGA is not the only game in town. This framework lets one handle algebra with any number of positive, negative and zero dimensions.

You might find Professor Lasenby's 2020 talk (among others at Bivector Youtube channel) useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7v2IUJtC3g

nileshtrivedi··on Build a simple 2D physics engine for JavaScript games (2012)
With the right algebra (PGA2D which adds an additional dimension whose unit vector squares to 0), rigid body physics simulation with collision detection/response can be implemented in < 50 lines of Javascript: https://bivector.net/PGADYN.html

Basically in PGA2D, rotations, angular velocity/acceleration, torque etc automatically get handled by geometric product of multivectors. The additional dimension makes all rotations centered at origin, which makes them compose much more nicely.

nileshtrivedi··on Handpicked No-Signup Tools
A couple of my tools that don't require signup:

- Grapher (a visual editor for graph datasets with features like nested nodes, custom attributes on nodes and edges, and export in Cytoscape JSON or SVG format. Accessible at: https://grapherx.netlify.app/

- LearnDB (A curated collection of links to educational resources organized by topics, formats, reviews and other tags). Accessible at: https://learndb.vercel.app/

This looks potentially useful. Is there a demo somewhere? And an example where the node graph created by users can be saved and served again?
