niles··on Laguna XS 2.1 33B on a RTX 3090: 296 tok/s peak, 152 tok/s at 256K context
Any 3090? Or does the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 and 128GB LPDDR5X unified memory on the Lucebox matter?

Anyone compare with the club-3090 dual setup?

niles··on Wayfinder Router: deterministic routing of queries between local and hosted LLM
Great name, but ironically hard to reason about from a role perspective, at least at the read me.

Does this interfere with cache hits? Could a single conversation or task span multiple roles?

Why are you building this? Does this maximize my toxen value by saving the hard tasks for the hard model? Does it maximize cache hits as part of its scoring? Does it help agents develop a specialist mindset? Are you anticipating users will have many local models hot, or is this also a model load/unload controller?

niles··on Show HN: The news in the last 30, 14, 7, 3, or 1 days
I understand this is for people so busy that they will press one time frame and keep returning at that same pace.

For me, I expected each date to reflect the most important stories, but to exclude the prior ranges.

For example, somehow three people getting exchanged is the most important news of every time period?

niles··on Windows 10 begins one-year countdown to end of support
If you go weird, note that GamePass (xbox) and MS store installs tend not to work or can break. For steam and other launchers it works fine.

See https://massgrave.dev/windows_ltsc_links

Same issue with most mini/slim scripts that mod your win 11 iso. Be sure to keep gaming services and Xbox from install.

Once it does its first update it will try and put back what you remove. And when you make a non-admin local account it will try again. Best to use a post-install script you can run often to keep settings off.

niles··on Freemasonry in 2024: What makes young members decide joining a lodge is for them
From the article, Odd Fellows are co-ed. Unitarian Universalist for more open but still religious. YMCA for more modern but slightly religious. All 3, probably a library.

Are you absolutely sure you believe there is no sixth dimensional force that existed before the big bang, or semi conscious entity keeping track of and or influencing the parameters of each multiverse?

Given the group and it's members are excommunicated by many Christians, it might be true that a lot of their baggage doesn't apply.

I'm curious if AGI will raise or lower guards related to spirituality.

niles··on Show HN: Ask LLMs to predict anything based on news
Basically what I'm describing is "backtesting" from stock trading space, where a trader comes up with a hypothesis on what will come in the future. Then they retry that scenario in slices where the same conditions happened in the past and see how it would have played out. Importantly, the "algo" sees in real time based on when you start it, so it can not cheat. It makes it easy to see whether or not your intuition is based on actual data.

I kinda feels like you are using the LLM to assign "weights" or important properties of an algo and then directly translating the basic arithmetic accounting of those factors into a prediction. What I expect is that the LLM would also be used to read all past news to find similar patterns and then create time slices where its weights could be tested against a control. It can then backtest its own weights to better tune what factors really led to an outcome and expose this refinement as part of the prediction.

niles··on Show HN: Ask LLMs to predict anything based on news
I was hoping for a tool that would reference "all" news, mainly historical news, and give some reasoning based on past patterns. My query on Kamala does not seem to factor in the news from just before the last Trump win over Hillary and how that time period contributed to a surprise win. It also doesn't seem to incorporate Regan, or past high inflation periods and how those news stories influenced the elections of the time.

It seems like this is a tool that "if you could read all the news of today, what would your gut tell you", and that is helpful but not thorough.

For example, can you apply the cureent reasoning to news articles from previous time periods and use the prediction on a past result. Would your prediction be accurate? If no, maybe re-reason.

niles··on How a 16th Century Explorer's Sailing Ship Works
Tally Ho was built very similar to this animation, it's a great YouTube series that just passed 200 episodes. The care, quality, engineering, and process that goes into each step is lost on the 3D animation. You really need to see the chisel work and the lines drawn to get how it all works. Highly recommend watching all 7 years! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg-_lYeV8hBnDSay7nmphUA
niles··on 9 Out of 10 People Are Willing to Earn Less Money to Do More-Meaningful Work
Does HN anticipate 'run for fun' becomes 'work for good'? In that the idea of putting yourself through physical and mental toil; investing in time, tools, gear, travel; effectively making a lifestyle around the personal development that comes from running will also happen to work.

Feels to me like many anticipate the possibility of a welfare state created by AI job loss will push people to scale back their financial needs to be able to fill their time with meaning. Will all work start to look like NGOs (modest compensation, local impact, ethical alignment, ala 'barn-raising')?

niles··on Paying freelancers in equity and dividends
I wish you addressed your original hypothesis with concrete examples (is this fair, does being early matter, is it clear)

Eg, you gave equity to early contributors, how much and what did that translate to? If those same people work as freelance now, are they paid the same relative equity? Same class?

How long would someone allocating to equity need to work before they see the equivalent in dividends? Calculator seems like 25 years. Or working as more or less full time for 12 years with a 50% split.

For me by the end I was left with more questions than answers, so I side with mom, but I like the general idea of https://flexile.com/

niles··on Amtrak no longer has to live 'hand to mouth', CEO says
Larger seats with more legroom and better seat angle, larger workspace with 120v outlet, larger window, less noise, more reasonable carry on rules and ability to stow a bunch of stuff. Cell phones work, and you can use 5G.

In the NE corridor the train station is downtown, so you need to factor in the price of getting to the airport, checking in, board, taxi, land, taxi check out, then travel from the airport to downtown.

It is a pretty competitive offering, even with the aged infrastructure, in my opinion the only real deal breaker is on longer routes where yes planes are faster and often cheaper, but the biggest issue is freight train priorities which can make train timing imperfect.

niles··on A framework to help B2B founders find product-market fit
My initial impression of this was poor, but I think that has more to do with the formatting of the slides not being conducive to mobile and the sheer volume of text.

After reading through and watching the candid videos, I can say there are valuable things that early stage founders can pull out so it is worth powering through.

I think more iterations and more depth on the case studies would be helpful for levels 1&2. Meaning, a broader sample of startups in the portfolio, and more tangible examples of changes that made a customer stop chrunning or sign up faster.

Using hypothetical or anonymized case studies and too few largely keeps this framework in the level 1-2 quadrant, which is ironic. Almost like this document was built (a technology) rather than helping a specific reader (a problem + solution).

niles··on Ask HN: How do news API services get their data/content?

niles··on Ask HN: What do y'all make of Netflix's 3 Body problem?
I don't like the smoking. I don't like they brought over actors from GOT, those casts seem off. It hasn't grabbed me like any of Apple's sci-fi.

It also seems like their 1080p stream is more like 720 upscale, rather than 4k down.

Overall, Netflix has been really excellent for Anime, but meh for live. Will finish the season at some point

niles··on 10 Minutes is ~1% of your day
I think it increases the perceived value of 10 minutes, especially when looking at the visual representation.

Once you account for your own non-negotiable slots it may well be 5 or even 10 percent of your (available) day.

I don't get the same effect when looking at an agenda planner as the typical day to day items are not present. There seems to be time to fill on calendars, the opposite here.
