nilamo··on The new literalism plaguing today’s movies
> a movie for two is like a $75 experience with popcorn

A ticket is less than $15 during the expensive times, and $10 off peak. Where in the world are you seeing movies?

I get it, I don't go to the theater anywhere near what I used to, but the nice one near me with a bar and a player piano in the lobby is still nowhere near $75 for two tickets.

nilamo··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
There's over 8 billion people, the population is exceptionally stable my friend.
nilamo··on New Date("wtf") – How well do you know JavaScript's Date class?
Let's say you're setting an appointment. The user puts in nonsense, so you helpfully schedule an appointment for a nonsense date (thank you so much, we'll get right to that in -124 years). Instead of... catching a parsing error and asking the user to try again or something? It's wild that a nonsense date would be considered for any purpose at all in a user-centric system.
nilamo··on FEMA Didn’t Answer Thousands of Calls From Flood Survivors
Most people don't consider giving yourself a bonus to be "spending" money.
nilamo··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
Why the quotes? Consultants are indeed hired for consulting work to be done.
nilamo··on At Least 13 People Died by Suicide Amid U.K. Post Office Scandal, Report Says
Why is such a person wandering around free if they were convicted? Do you think prison sentences are not harsh enough?

> A decade into his political career and we're still doing this.

Satire? I think political satire has been around for a whole lot more than just one decade, friend.

nilamo··on Show HN: A rain Pomodoro with brown noise, ASMR, and Middle Eastern music
I thought common words were free use...? You don't need a license with Apple to make an apple shaped pomodoro timer.
nilamo··on Why are there no good dinosaur films?
I enjoy watching the Oracle's multi-century-long plan of manipulating both humans and the architect. Her mastery of psychology is absolutely beautiful.
nilamo··on Anthropic cut up millions of used books, and downloaded 7M pirated ones – judge
> They're still going to send the Pinkertons at your house if you dare copy a Blu-ray.

Hey woah now, that's a Hasbro play, not a Disney one.

nilamo··on Ask HN: Any resources for finding non-smart appliances?
But the TV comes with the remote. An appliance with an app doesn't even have the courtesy of a remote.
nilamo··on Are we the baddies?
Now that tips are tax free in the USA, they are unlikely to be going away.
nilamo··on July 5, 1687: When Newton explained why you don't float away
Is that how all "science" was written? It's nearly unreadable, the plot (Spirit?) lost in the language.
nilamo··on Peasant Railgun
Did you also gain 4 levels from all that sweet xp?
nilamo··on Xfinity using WiFi signals in your house to detect motion
Is it nothing? I bet the price is nothing.
nilamo··on Starcloud can’t put a data centre in space at $8.2M in one Starship
Quick, we need a new Cryptonomicon, in space!
nilamo··on Structured Output with LangChain and Llamafile
My experience, as someone who is also new and trying to figure things out, is that langchain works great as long as everything you want to do has an adapter. Try to step off the path, and things get really complex really fast. After hitting that several times, I've found it's easier to just do things directly instead of trying to figure out the langchain way of doing things.

I've found dspy to work closer to how I think, which has made working with pipelines so much easier for me.

nilamo··on OpenAI wins $200M U.S. defense contract
I disagree that government doing nothing is better than keeping money flowing. Or, I disagree that money should be removed from the populace via taxation, if that funding doesn't have any path back to the populace. Government doing nothing is a net negative to the entire country, and is worse (imo) than doing "nonproductive" spending. A nonproductive spend is still spend that keeps people employed, families fed, researchers researching, etc.

I don't believe that you guys all believe the military industrial complex should start sitting on cash and collecting interest, even though that's what you're saying. The obvious solution is "they don't need that much money", but that's unrelated to how they spend the money they do have.

nilamo··on OpenAI wins $200M U.S. defense contract
We're also talking about a governmental body. Generating the highest returns possible is a non-goal, and disregarding potentially useful things simply because they aren't the best possible use of funds is an easy way to just never do anything.
nilamo··on OpenAI wins $200M U.S. defense contract
Is all of that truely "waste", if it is being paid toward onshore companies? The money doesn't disappear, it gets redistributed to American companies.
nilamo··on Occurences of swearing in the Linux kernel source code over time
Similarly, "stupid hack" adds nothing that just "hack" doesn't say. And in that case, why have a comment at all? The code is likely obviously hacky.

At least I can have a laugh while looking at the hack someone came up with...

nilamo··on Working on databases from prison
I agree that it is nice to keep in mind as a general philosophy, however I also think it's important to keep in mind that the people who originally wrote "innocent until proven guilty" were all treasonous sepratists, and their philosophy may or may not always align with my own.
nilamo··on If the moon were only 1 pixel: A tediously accurate solar system model (2014)
> Hm, not sure if that is really less depressing...

A starship capable of such a journey is surely large enough to bring all your friends and family along, colony-ship style.

"I needed money." Why is that not a good enough answer?
nilamo··on Twitter's new encrypted DMs aren't better than the old ones
I recognize the benefits of open communication, while also not wanting to participate in something so gross. I'm absolutely baffled by people claiming censorship free is the only option, and that any moderation at all is bad. A free for all is not what I want, in any platform or space I participate in.
nilamo··on Twitter's new encrypted DMs aren't better than the old ones
I won't speak for others, but I refuse to use a service that doesnt work if I'm not signed in. But when it did work, there didn't appear to be overzealous banning, and all the banning conversation appeared to be coming from sources that deserved to be banned, imo.

So when you say "it's still good" while also mentioning thought police, I take what you're saying with a huge grain of salt, as I never noticed thought police to begin with, so less of something unnoticable sounds very close to "complete anarchy, nazis, and that's how we like it". Like 4chan put on a business suit.

nilamo··on Giant planet discovered orbiting tiny star
Sounds less like a planet, and more like a nebula.
nilamo··on Big banks explore venturing into crypto world together with joint stablecoin
> But real money comes from gambling and offering gambling services... Also known as investing...

There's a huge gulf between a night at the poker tables, and buying into a little of MSFT's dividend, and it's really disengenuous to pretend they're the same.
