nilamo··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
That is a nicer message than I remember. I don't have an issue with that. It let's you know it doesn't work, that it will never work, and provides links to an alternative and more information.

It either used to do fewer of those, or my memory is Swiss cheese, but I remember needing to search for the why's and alternatives.

nilamo··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
Does that seem like a real solution to you? That it's ok to represent a never-functional operation as one that might maybe work? ...because it could work of you jump through a bunch of undocumented hoops?

It's so wild to me that so many people are apparently against making a user-friendly update. The whole thing seems very against pep8 (its surprising, complicated, non-specific, etc)

nilamo··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
That was 7 years ago. If it's not coming back, the CLI should make that clear, instead of giving a temporary "cannot connect" message that implies it could work, if you wait a minute and try again.

Pip is broken and has been for years, they're uninterested in fixing the search. Or even removing the search or replacing it with a message/link to the package index.

imo, if pip's preference is to ship broken functionality, then what is/is not shipped with pip is not meaningful.

nilamo··on US influencer stranded in Antarctica after landing plane without permission
The phrasing of this is very funny to me. How dare he land without permission, he should have flown circles until his fuel ran out and he crashed! /s
nilamo··on Pricing Pages – A Curated Gallery of Pricing Page Designs
Adobe's subscription is so bad for this.

Want a single product? It's only available for annual subscriptions for hundreds of dollars, with huge cancellation fees (the rest of the year). But it comes with a dozen or so products you'll never download lol

nilamo··on A brief history of the absurdities of the Soviet Union
Dang, you're so right, a post-scarcity society is obviously not feasible without renacting a fictional story.

Y'all took the example, and dove right onto the wackiest parts of that example, huh? We also haven't met a continuum of godlike sycophants, so I guess space travel isn't possible for us at all yet lmao

nilamo··on A brief history of the absurdities of the Soviet Union
That seems awfully defeatist and with a very negative view of the human spirit.

I can imagine the end of Capitalism, and it looks like Star Trek.

nilamo··on Let's properly analyze an AI article for once
Why are you against running a vm? And a superior OS in the vm, to boot?

Your comment gives spooky vibes. Like, I'd expect you to avoid pattern matching, because "nested ifs work fine".

nilamo··on Ultrathin business card runs a fluid simulation
>$10 per business card is extremely high, though.
nilamo··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
2fa is two factor authentication. User+password is the first factor, and is a "something you know" check. The second factor is a "something you have" check. Like sending you an SMS code.

They exist so if someone watches over your shoulder while typing your password, they don't gain access to anything.

nilamo··on Anthropic revokes OpenAI's access to Claude
That's just because they can't beat sqlite and they're too embarrassed by it.
nilamo··on Anthropic revokes OpenAI's access to Claude
So it isn't normal developer access, like an API, there's something special about it that most developers with access to the API could not access.
nilamo··on I couldn't submit a PR, so I got hired and fixed it myself
We all recognize this as an anti-pattern that has directly led to a poor customer experience, right?
nilamo··on Every satellite orbiting earth and who owns them (2023)
Hi my name is SpaceY and I get paid to launch other companies payloads. What happens once they're deployed in orbit is the customer's responsibility, we specialize only in launching.

Companies don't work for the public good, or even their own good, most of the time. Strange that you'd expect that to change.

nilamo··on Study mode
And now we get all the way back to the OP, and having so little knowledge on the subject that you don't know what to Google, or which forums are trustworthy for that topic. And so the wheel turns...
nilamo··on Study mode
And then when you don't find it, you move onto the next book. Problem solved!
nilamo··on Study mode
When you Google the new term it gives you and you get good results, you know it wasn't made up.

Since when was it acceptable to only ever look at a single source?

nilamo··on 4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program
Streamlined and efficient normally means removing unneeded excess, or removing programs that didn't align with the overall goal. Convincing all your smart people to work somewhere else isn't streamlining, it's eliminating all possibility of future progress.
nilamo··on Open Sauce is a confoundingly brilliant Bay Area event
The idea that a kid can't play without some tangible end goal of employment is what's gross. Not the activity, or the underlying discipline (engineering, in this case).
nilamo··on I'm Unsatisfied with Easing Functions
My experience seeing animals is apparently different from yours. The anticipation/tell is very clear for a wide range of animals... Birds squat down before taking off, cats hunker down to the ground before pouncing, etc.

Even the human jumping example again... Suggesting people only bend their knees for performance would mean the "normal" way of jumping involves keeping your legs straight at all times and using your ankles/toes for all your thrust?

nilamo··on I'm Unsatisfied with Easing Functions
Sure they do? When people do a standing jump, they first crouch lower to the ground. An arrow is pulled back on the bow before fired. A ball pushed uphill will roll uphill before stopping and rolling downhill.
nilamo··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
An article being inaccessible or illegible counts as tangential?
nilamo··on TODOs aren't for doing
Rider definitely has a popup with a list of TODOs before you push to the remote. I assumed that originally existed in intellij... but never verified that.
nilamo··on AI capex is so big that it's affecting economic statistics
One is a footnote in history on the way to decent ML, and the other is the literal moon in the sky. Your comment must be dripping in sarcasm.
nilamo··on Firefox-patch-bin, librewolf-fix-bin AUR packages contain malware
Plenty of package managers (such as `yay`) install from AUR by default.
nilamo··on Psilocybin decreases depression and anxiety in cancer patients (2016)
> Paul Stamets is a weird dude

A Star Trek reference?

nilamo··on “Reading Rainbow” was created to combat summer reading slumps
Someone could also fund it forever, with a donation large enough such that the endowment's dividends exceed yearly costs.

But no one has.

nilamo··on I'm switching to Python and actually liking it
And the first best is python3!
nilamo··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
France isn't all of humanity. France's population can decline without any major impact. Life goes on.
