nilamo··on Tiny Core Linux: a 23 MB Linux distro with graphical desktop
"640k ought to be enough for everyone!"
nilamo··on Zellij: A terminal workspace with batteries included
You pull the Ethernet cable out before it finishes. Or your wifi router hiccups
nilamo··on Advertising as a major source of human dissatisfaction (2019) [pdf]
They're very annoying all around on YouTube. Hit skip, wait five seconds, hit skip again... and if you don't, there's a several minute ad??!
nilamo··on Advertising as a major source of human dissatisfaction (2019) [pdf]
Free samples or in-store demonstrations like we used to.
nilamo··on High-income job losses are cooling housing demand
I don't see how one follows the other.

On the one hand, less high earning employees seems to logically indicate that large purchases would also go down.

And on the other hand, a program to give everyone a little eating money would never have been able to pay for a house, anyway.

nilamo··on Google unkills JPEG XL?
Barred by who? There is no governing body who can do such a thing, currently. As it is, nothing stops any random person or organization from creating any new format.
nilamo··on Human brains are preconfigured with instructions for understanding the world
The Epstein drives are efficient, but not efficient enough to run for months at a time without stopping, and are thus unusable for interstellar travel. The books go into that when talking about Medina/Behemoth/Nauvoo... The whole reason it had a rotating drum was because the engines would only be active at the start and end of the journey.
nilamo··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
He did. It all happened on wikileaks.
nilamo··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
That is what the church of Scientology does with people they don't like. 24/7, people standing outside your house, recording you.
nilamo··on Republican push to make U.S. census surveys voluntary alarms statisticians
It's not a bias if it's just history repeating.
nilamo··on A race condition in Aurora RDS
I think the key here is just proper notifications. Yes it's eventually consistent, but having a "processing" or "update in progress" is a huge improvement over showing a user old data.
nilamo··on Wealthy foreigners 'paid for chance to shoot civilians in Sarajevo'
I was only talking about the files that congress refuses to release. Everything you mentioned is unrelated to the files I was replying to, and nothing in what I said suggests that "nothing happened".
nilamo··on The last-ever penny will be minted today in Philadelphia
It would obviously be someone as equally legendary as Washington or Jefferson; noted American Paul Bunyan. We can even call them Big Blue Bucks.
nilamo··on The last-ever penny will be minted today in Philadelphia
Oh no, a made up problem that's easily solved by changing the price slightly in any direction, whatever will we do.
nilamo··on This week in 1988, Robert Morris unleashed his eponymous worm
Both of those agree that is was '88...
nilamo··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
Or, you can use a task runner like mise or just, and tell it to use the task runner instead of any particular tool directly. `mise test:unit` is much harder for an agent to get wrong.

> no point in trusting people who are disconnect from reality

My brother in christ, we are all just names without bodies or even faces on this digital ocean of the internet. Letting people know how they should address you isn't "disconnected from reality", it's grounded in the very real reality that we, as people, like talking to each other. We should all be so thankful for their foresight in allowing us the opportunity of avoiding an otherwise unavoidable faux pas of calling everyone in the world "hey you".

If that works for you, then that's cool. Personally, I don't want to think about environments, and it's weird that python is the only language that has venvs. Having a tool that handles it completely transparently to me is ideal, to me.
nilamo··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
woah no way, dude. cool
nilamo··on Grammarly rebrands to 'Superhuman,' launches a new AI assistant
I guess I don't see what the problem is?

If someone says a particular word or phrase is problematic for them, no one can tell them they're wrong. You cannot dictate how other people respond to language, and it's really weird to see people trying to do that.

nilamo··on A worker fell into a nuclear reactor pool
The zeitgeist has been anti-nuclear for so many decades, fear pops up around any topic that's at all adjacent to a reactor.
nilamo··on The future of Python web services looks GIL-free
Flask's request context is a global object. And since this is specifically about web services, flask seems highly relevant to the conversation.
nilamo··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
True. Sometimes they hunt for the Titanic.

Do you also assume all black SUVs with tinted windows are drug smugglers? Because it's the same level of evidence. ie: it isn't.

nilamo··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
Yes, I doubt. The US intelligence has invented intelligence plenty of times in the past, and I absolutely do not trust that particular shadow branch of ICE.

Even if what they say is true, destroying boats with people on them without proof is wild.

nilamo··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
"Today's defensive action we have taken demonstrates the first step to discourage these unmarked foreign terrorist attacks against our civilians. It is our duty to protect our people, which we will continue to do against the rising numbers of offensive boats assaulting us."

I imagine sooner or later, they will stop our black ops boats from shooting people.

nilamo··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
And we're ok with murdering dozens of people that might maybe have some kind of drugs on them? In peacetime? Without evidence? Outside of our own territory/water?

We're lucky Venezuela hasn't attacked us back yet.

nilamo··on Sequoia COO quit over Shaun Maguire's comments about Mamdani
There's three names in that title, and none of them are explained in the tiny slice of an article that's free. Am I expected to just know who these random people are?
nilamo··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
That's a strange mindset, IMO. I'd be pissed if I had to pay $0.10 every time I turned a rachet, and it's weird to expect companies to have usage-based monetization on the tools they've made for others.
nilamo··on NASA chief suggests SpaceX may be booted from moon mission
That feels like a bit of rewriting the past. How could someone plan on stealing valuables from somewhere across the ocean... before they know there even is an "across the ocean" to get to?

It also feels quite off to reduce all of human curiosity to a means of getting one over on someone.

nilamo··on NASA chief suggests SpaceX may be booted from moon mission
Why must there be a NEED? Why did we ever send ships across the ocean to explore? Where was the need? People like doing science, and so we're doing science.
