nikole9696··on Frequent social media use tied to higher levels of irritability
I agree here about the news.

Anecdata: my Dad, who is in his 70s, was doing an awful lot of basically doomscrolling his news feed and just reading headlines like, all day. He was cranky, irritable, and just plain getting meaner. My Mom had a talk with him and got him to dial that way back and he's definitely got a better attitude now. He's replaced that with some games and actual reading of dead trees (thanks, Bathroom Reader)

nikole9696··on Are grownups just giant kids?
I'm a mature woman, older than most of my colleagues. And I do this. I have reached an age where I don't care if it sounds childish. If I'm grumpy, I say so. It has nothing to do (usually) with my colleagues, and I like them to know that if I seem snippy, it's me, not them. Sure we can all try to not be mean or rude or whatever, but everyone is human. My teammates are encouraged to also just be real people - if you're grumpy or tired or whatever, just say so.

I have to say that our team is amazing and all get on well together, so likely this vulnerability is easier on us because of that. The men on my team are just as quick to share their feelings too. It's really quite nice.

nikole9696··on Gene behind orange fur in cats
More anecdata; my orange boy also thought he was the family dog. He was rather dumb as a rock, but sweet as pie. Loved every human or animal he ever met.

My current cat is a calico and white and she's...emotional. =)

nikole9696··on How honeycrisp apples went from marvel to mediocre
I'm with all the folks who say they've swapped Honeycrisp for Cosmic Crisp. The Honeycrisp I get now is a poor shadow of what it used to be. This article is very interesting. I suspected the quality shift had to do with mass market selling, but it's nice to see the long form version of what I suspected.
nikole9696··on Honeycrisp apples went from marvel to mediocre
Oh man I found these once and just LOVED them.
nikole9696··on Amazon Haul–a broad selection of products $20 or less
Because we don't have enough garbage in the ocean from all the "disposable", cheaply made products. Let's just keep churning out stuff that breaks within a year and fill up those landfills, oceans, and whatever else needed to pile them all in.
nikole9696··on Researchers develop first banana plant resistant to TR4 and black sigatoka
The article states "Yelloway One is the product of conventional breeding techniques." and that [...]"modern DNA analysis technology to accelerate the process of developing resistant banana varieties. This allowed them to select new varieties with desired traits, such as disease resistance, more quickly and efficiently"

I think that means it's non-GMO and shouldn't cause a kerfluffle.

nikole9696··on What's your favorite RSS feed reader?
Another vote for Feedly here. I like the interface, it's pretty simple and I don't need much (nor want more). I'm on the free plan. I can get my feeds from any of my devices, which is important to me. The iOS apps for my phone and ipad work great. That's really all I need.
nikole9696··on Our data isn't safe. Resist giving it up whenever you can
I wish we could find a better way. I've had my info stolen via breaches so much that I just pay credit monitoring and keep my credit locked all the time now. At this point every hacker knows more about me than I do.
nikole9696··on The QR Backlash Has Won. Restaurants Are Ditching Them for Good.
Not a single one of my family members would know how to even begin to use such a payment system. Several older members don't have smart phones at all. If this is an OPTION that's great, but to make it required means a lot of folks get left out.
nikole9696··on Dolt Is Git for Data
That seems like an unfortunate name. "Dolt" is another word for "idiot".
nikole9696··on TechCrunch+ discountinued, all content will be free at TechCrunch.com
Nice. I unfollowed their RSS some time back - might be time to re-add it.
nikole9696··on Lab-meat dubbed one of 2023's biggest technology failures
It would take a huge scale study to prove to me that the protein and other nutrients are the same as real meat and just as bioavailable. And I'm not replacing real meat with it until we know those things are true. I might try it as a novelty but not at those prices. It's not that I wouldn't eat it because it's somehow gross to me - if it looks like chicken and tastes like chicken, I'm down.
nikole9696··on Ask HN: How to change my career path as a 40 y/o?
Are you really seeking to change just for remote work? Because project managers absolutely CAN be fully remote. Ours are. =)
nikole9696··on Remote Work Hurts Innovation Among Work Teams New Study Finds
I wanted to hate this article, but it actually had advice I've seen posted here many times. Some stuff IS better in person. But a lot is fine remote. And if you support your remote workers properly, even the ones who did better IRL can be pretty close to that remote too.

"[n]ot every worker is involved in the innovative core of the business — the part of the operation that's trying to come up with exciting new things. Yes, the product teams will probably stumble upon better ideas if they're together in person. But the people in roles like accounting, HR, and IT are there to support the innovators, not to innovate themselves. So they should be fine working from home. That's one reason companywide RTO mandates make little sense."

nikole9696··on Rising costs mean food companies are making snacks, sodas taste worse
That makes a lot of sense. I recall thinking that it just tasted like slightly chocolate flavored sugar and was waxy - no flavor at all, just sweet and waxy. I guess you get what you pay for - my other splurge lately was a tiny chocolate from a specialty shop that was $1 for a single small piece, which I balked at, but it was DELICIOUS.
nikole9696··on Rising costs mean food companies are making snacks, sodas taste worse
This might explain my recent experience too. I've been on a health journey and stopped eating most junk some time back. Recently, I decided to go ahead and splurge and get a chocolate bar that I always used to love. It tasted like hot garbage. Whether that's because my taste buds have changed or the product did is probably debatable, but I'm thrilled it's no longer a temptation to buy it!

They ruined Cadbury Eggs years ago for me, and now "fun size" snickers too!

nikole9696··on Amazon is blocking promotions of employees who don't comply with RTO policy
So why are you still there? Just the money, or it takes time to find a new job, or something else? There's plenty of smaller companies hiring still, but not at those salaries. What is it that DOES retain the staff there?
nikole9696··on Ozempic linked to stomach paralysis, other gastrointestinal issues: UBC study
I hate this sentiment. It can be used about, well, anything at all that might cause your risk of anything to go up as far as science understands it today (which might be different tomorrow, they're always learning).

Accident while biking? Nope - too risky, no care for you. Eat red meat and get cancer? Too bad, no treatment for you. Same for drinking wine, or doing any of the thousands of things "they" say MAY raise your cancer risk.

Joint problems happen to all manner of people, thin or fat, but we'll only pay for treatment for the thin ones.

It just goes on.

nikole9696··on Ask HN: Tech career advice for unsexy but decently paying jobs($100k, US remote)
Is it remote work?
nikole9696··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
The inability to block ads I personally find offensive is the #1 reason I'll use a browser with ad block over a native app. Reddit and Tumblr are my two biggest offenders that do not let me properly block particular ads - notably gambling and religion, but also those scam mobile games and other scammy nonsense. I get that they need to pay the bills, but I should have some level of control over what I see.
nikole9696··on Instant Brands, maker of Instant Pot and Pyrex cookware, files for bankruptcy
This is quite possible. I use mine to cook wild rice, which takes awhile stovetop. And hard boiled eggs, which come out great. Everything else I've tried with it, I might as well just cook with the stove or oven. I don't like most recipes I've seen and am somewhat of a picky eater.
nikole9696··on Kiss your free returns goodbye
I would love to be able to go into a brick and mortar store for my clothes. Unfortunately, most of the brands I buy only carry petite sizes online, or have an extremely limited petite selection which my 90 year old neighbor would love. I'm 5 feet tall. I can't buy a shirt or pants meant for someone who is 5'6". Tailoring doesn't change the proportions of where the neck and sleeve holes are or how the crotch fits; you can't just lop 4 inches off the bottom of something. So, I'm stuck with online shopping and wildly dumb sizing.
nikole9696··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
"Browse the albums of a particular artist and play it – this is becoming harder and harder"

So much agreement here - of the most annoying things to me is that I can't just click on an artist and have an easy way to list every song by that artist.

nikole9696··on Captchas Are Becoming Ridiculous
I will say up front that I have no good solution. That said, as a human, I hate captchas or anything else that makes me jump through hoops to do something that should be simple. The industry is punishing people to avoid bots or (whatever they are using them for in the instance), and yet it doesn't even work to accomplish that goal. Eliminate it all. Find something new. I wish I knew what to suggest. But it won't be anything at all like a captcha, stupid game to play, security questions, or anything like that.
