nik282000··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
I hooked up my local LLM with zim-tools and a 120GB copy of Wikipedia. With some very strict instruction it's turned into a bar-trivia machine, it can answer factual questions faster than I can look them up and it's all offline.

The fun starts when you ask it more complicated questions like 'i have a device that communicates with microwaves and draws a maximum of 20mA at 12v, is it safe for use near humans?' It will look up microwave safety, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, workplace exposure limits and eventually come up with 1/4W is already safe and the device likely is not a 100% efficient microwave transmitter.

nik282000··on Divide by depth for instant 3D
wtf, I thought this was THE cheap way to 3D.
nik282000··on Korea raises data breach fines to 10% of revenue
> Your replies here suggest a level of cynicism that is, well, … , it ain’t pretty. It seems you think “fuck the human cost as long as I’m making money”. I’d suggest changing your outlook on life if I didn’t feel like it wasn’t such a lost cause.

This is the default business mindset. Push every rule and regulation to the limit in the name of profit, if you can break a rule with minimal concequsnces then pay the fine and move on.

Stellantis has a recall out for >1M vehicles because they catch fire even when turned off. Unless that kind of fuckup is met with business threatening fines it will happen again.

nik282000··on War may be coming. Are we psychologically ready?
It's only behind a paywall for US users, for making their country great again a second time.
nik282000··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
You expect people to treat devices with respect and responsibility? The VAST majority of people use their phones to stream an infinite sequence of clickbait, ai slop, and conspiracies for 6 to 8 hours a day.
nik282000··on iPhone Duo
Blue collar maintenance worker here. I will have a yearly average income much higher than most of my peers because I'll likely die before I can retire and spend it ;)
nik282000··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1
> it lets people who are good at setting direction to leverage these tools to have the direction concretely followed by something, without having to create a group of collaborators

It lets the unskilled access the tools of the skilled without having had to learn all the pitfalls, traps, and safety concerns. With video editing there may not be much at stake but we've already seen how sloppy code ~= vulnerable code when the prompter does not know what they are doing. What's going to happen when project managers start vibegeneering cars and buildings.

nik282000··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
The browsers on the computers at work show that it is very much still the driveby tool-bar install days.
nik282000··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Chromium forks are not the same as Chrome but it does help Alphabet keep a strangle hold on the render engine ecology. And eithr way, monocultures are bad, a surprise vulnerability could nuke 70% of users overnight, which could be partiularly bad with features like WebSerial and WebUSB.
nik282000··on Hang on to Your Firefox
It's like Reddit and Lemmy. The majority of users did not switch to Lemmy but the ones that did seem to engage more and share cooler stuff. They are there on purpose, not because it's the default platform.
nik282000··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Not like Chrome, Chrome feels like it LOVES hanging out with me, looking over my shoulder, telling all it's friends about what I'm working on, what I buy, and how much money I make.
nik282000··on I built a hardware-bound local password vault hidden in a photo
Sloppy slop.

A strong password and strong encryption is enough. The presence of 'blindlock' on a device is a clear indication that one of your files is a wallet. Phoning home to do a licence check is EVERY time you use it is obnoxious and defeats the purpose of having local software.

nik282000··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Sales volume has no correlation with how good a company is for an ecosystem. See Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Sony, and so on.
nik282000··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Ah yes, if he was innocent he would have nothing to hide.

Would you care to post screenshots of your inboxes and browser history for the class?

nik282000··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
You unlock your phone or they unlock your jaw, then your fingers, then your knees, etc.
nik282000··on AI usage patterns in software teams
I program as a hobby, personal projects because I can.

I recently set up a local llm to see what the fuss is about and other than the few ringer solutions my experience is as you described. 2min promping, 5min waiting, 3hrs debugging or just doing it myself.

I am very likely doing it wrong, and it does speed up some aspects, but I wouldn't say I trust llm code any more than my own. Until it runs and throws an error, the llm is 100% confident that it has written perfect code.

nik282000··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
There's been a few. The last one was 2007 when the iPhone changed the internet from a place you went because you wanted to be there and had a reason to engage, into an app meant to entertain you for 5min at a time between text messages and flushing.
nik282000··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
Big fan of "slop-jockies" as a collective term for AI spammers.
nik282000··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
Does GMail silently filter spam now? I get maybe 5 new messages in my spam folder per month for the past couple of years and I'm not sure if Google is just dropping the most blatant spam or if my primary address is somehow not on any lists.
nik282000··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
I can only imagine the Google/MS monetized horror that would be an e-mail replacement.
nik282000··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
If the "author" didn't feel like taking the time to write the text why should I take the time to read it? LLMs are great for summarizing, if you are going to slop 100% of a document make it a summary and save us all the time.
nik282000··on Someone is running mass vulnerability scans, spoofing AI bots like ClaudeBot
I went from 2k hits a day to 15k in the past week.

Point a domain at your IP, use letsencrypt, post your domain on Reddit, github, x, etc. The bots will find you.

nik282000··on Someone is running mass vulnerability scans, spoofing AI bots like ClaudeBot
I've had a similar bump in scanners in the past week, more than half of it is coming from MS and Google owned IPs and all of them are spoofing AI agents.
nik282000··on Grok Bot
It's greed at the top pushing the market into insanity. "AI" vendors are dangling the carrot of "eliminate manpower" in front of the manpower-owning class and they are throwing everything they have at it. The wealth that's been thrown into this hole could have payed for a couple million work-years of developers.
nik282000··on Humanising LLM Outputs Is Dumb
You just saved me a bunch of bickering. TY.
nik282000··on Water system controllers don't belong on the internet, says ex-NSA chief
No infrastructure should be on the open internet the potential for abuse is incredible. At a minimum a VPN should be used to tunnel all connections back to what ever command and control server exist, leaving equipment visible on the public IP should be a crime if not a felony.
nik282000··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
The fact that you can think is what is valuable. I work for a slew of drones who will ask the same question 4 or 5 times, to multiple people, hoping that one of them will 'slip up' and reveal that there is actually a hidden easy solution.
nik282000··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
While a lot of my tools are faster I would never call them automated. You stil have to put the wire in the crimp, you still have to measure the pipe and make the cut, you still need to put the head of the driver in the screw. The 'hard' part is still 100% on the human.

The only way to really automate electrical installation is at the source (ha), when the construction materials are manufactured. I can imagine some god awful system of snap-together conduit prefilled with conductor, and junction boxes with monster dip switches to replace manual connections. It will cost 10x the price of standard materials, and it will be horribly wastful, but the labour costs will be negligible if it can be done by a robot or unskilled labourer.

nik282000··on Studio Canal Movies purchased on PlayStation Store removed without refund
I'd like to add Daria to that list. Most of the music has rights issuses and the DVD release has had it all replaced with generic 90s music-like filler.
