I have been designing for startups (mostly from SF and Europe) from Buenos Aires (Argentina) for over two years now and I think that if you find a good and talented designer / developer you can get first world quality work at a third world price.

Just to make sure, ask the designer as many questions as you can about their design process and their communication process. Also, make them sign a contract.

Sell it. Get rid of the trademarks and maybe use the money to build a real website.

Does that includes UI design?

If I had to hire someone to build my MVP I would rather focus on design than creating a killer app on the first version.

This is why. Since the service is not popular, doesnt have many users or features, I would try to convert users by offering them a great user experience.

Thats why I would invest 3k on a great UI/UX design and the rest on building the app.

niicoon Ask HN: Where to find designers for low-budget startup?

Every designer has its own design process, specially when it comes to branding design. The price will vary depending on the work required, if you need business cards, branding applications (tshirts, flags, stationary, etc).

Charging you $600 for a 4-5 hour work, its just symbolic. The amount of work put on a logo easily takes a couple days if not weeks to come up with the final design.

For instance, Comedy Central was charged $1MM for their logo redesign and the agency charged them for just "1 hour" of work. This doesnt mean they normally charge $1MM per hour.

SEO is dead. Mobile IS THE FUTURE.

I used to create simple websites, do some SEO and get thousands of visit daily and now its impossible. Regular link building its dead nowadays.

So, building freemium apps IS the future.

niicoon Ask HN: Where does one find a remarkable designer co-founder?

I believ "Not all designers are created equal". For instance, I have a very deep understanding of SEO, some dont. Some may code much better than I do, some are better at illustrations, some are better at web and some are better at iOS designing.

Simply check their portfolio and see if you "match" his or her style. If you are into minimalism you dont want to work with a designer that really likes to put tons of fancy effects on their design.

niicoon Ask HN: Where does one find a remarkable designer co-founder?

As a UI designer, let me speak for most of the designers out there. Designers =! Tech people. Probably they will know some html, css and hopefully js with a little understanding of php. (Man, that's a keeper!) BUT, in order to actually "pick up" a talented designer you need to "paint" your idea in a different way that you are already telling it. What I mean by that. We, designers don't have our logical part of our brain developed as well as you have, so what I'm saying by this is you need to figure out a more "emotional"/creative way to sell your idea to the designers. For instance you can tell them "how this ugly ass looking app made millions or had so many people using it".
