nightshift1··on Gmail can read your emails and attachments to train its AI, unless you opt out
Ha ! I disabled the smart features in gmail and then used gemini to ask something unrelated. The massage ended with:

"By the way, to unlock the full functionality of all Apps, enable Gemini Apps Activity." with a link to myactivitydotgoogledotcom

nightshift1··on Copyright winter is coming (to Wikipedia?)
not since oct28
nightshift1··on The last-ever penny will be minted today in Philadelphia
we should have converted everything to integers.
nightshift1··on FFmpeg to Google: Fund us or stop sending bugs
I don't think anyone can force them to fix cve. Software is provided as-is. Can't be more straightforward as that.
nightshift1··on Vibe Code Warning – A personal casestudy
This is a good list. Once the plan is in good shape, I clear the context and ask the LLM to evaluate the plan against the codebase and find the flaws and oversights. It will always find something to say but it will become less and less relevant.
nightshift1··on Canadian military will rely on public servants to boost its ranks by 300k
Afaik, Canada's public service jobs are unionized. Maybe it's a trick to make people resign or if they don't, just send them to the front-lines. /s

nightshift1··on Why LTO-10 fell short on speed and backward compatibility
Databases and their transaction logs, operating system files just to name a couple. Tape backups are not for home-labbers.
nightshift1··on Why LTO-10 fell short on speed and backward compatibility
File compression requires additional storage, memory and processing power. Why bother if the tape appliance already handle it ? Data is unusable in compressed format and is hard to deduplicate. Also, often, there is already compression at the storage array level but the data is decompressed when read.
nightshift1··on It's the “hardware”, stupid
A bit like the Transcendence (2014) movie.
nightshift1··on Asbestosis
My parents had me at 40. I wish they had me sooner. They were old and tired for all my life and at 40 my last parent is already near the end. I have only known one of my grandparents. My parents were the equivalent of other kids grandparents. You do you but i think it's selfish.
nightshift1··on The Linux Boot Process: From Power Button to Kernel
yes, and the bar is not at all at the same level.
nightshift1··on The Linux Boot Process: From Power Button to Kernel
I dont know, i just don't like the tone. This is a complex subject where the target audience should probably already know what is an hexadecimal number or an interrupt and the explanation of a cpu register ought to be better than: "A register is a tiny slot inside the CPU. It holds a number the CPU is using right now." If the subject interest you, you deserve better.
nightshift1··on The Linux Boot Process: From Power Button to Kernel
The topic is interesting but it seems to be targeted for my grandmother.
nightshift1··on 'Attention is all you need' coauthor says he's 'sick' of transformers
maybe that's a good thing after all.
nightshift1··on Microsoft Amplifier
Future LLMs are going to be trained on this. Github really ought to start tagging repos that are vibe-coded.
nightshift1··on Microsoft Amplifier
I think that letting an LLM run unsupervised on a task is a good way to waste time and tokens. You need to catch them before they stray too far off-path. I stopped using subagents in Claude because I wasn't able to see what they were doing and intervene. Indirectly asking an LLM to prompt another LLM to work on a long, multi-step task doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I think community efforts should go toward making LLMs more deterministic with the help of good old-fashioned software tooling instead of role-playing and writing prayers to the LLM god.
nightshift1··on Which table format do LLMs understand best?
I am not an expert on the subject but i suggest that you can also save context space by using shorter XML element names (like f instead of function, c instead of class, etc.). Just add a legend at the top or bottom to explain what each abbreviation means, LLMs can figure out the mapping without issues. I use this approach when generating project structure maps with Tree-sitter. I did a quick comparison and didn't notice much degradation with claude, so the context space you save may make it worthwhile. I would be interested to see a proper comparison.
nightshift1··on How AWS S3 serves 1 petabyte per second on top of slow HDDs
Here is another very interesting post on the subject from 2023:

nightshift1··on Addendum to GPT-5 system card: GPT-5-Codex
What are the usage limits like compared to Claude Code? Is it more like 5× or 20×? For twice the price, it would have to be very good.
nightshift1··on Improving LLM token usage when debugging
I think that the easy solution to this is to run the command with a cheap model in a sub agent that is going to detect the relevant information and raise it to the main context. I think claude code is already doing this.

Trying to find the perfect set of regex that will cover all the edge cases for all the programs+versions is quite a task.

nightshift1··on Getting good results from Claude Code
yes, that is why even in full automated mode, it is better to pay attention. Sometimes it even tries to git checkout the file when it is stuck with some i indentation issues.
nightshift1··on GPT-5 vs. Sonnet: Complex Agentic Coding
unless you use it through copilot
nightshift1··on How Anthropic teams use Claude Code
I agree with that list. I would also add that you should explicitly ask the llm to read the whole files at least once before starting edits because they often have tunnel vision. The project map is auto generated with a script to avoid reading too many files but the files to be edited should be fresh in the context imo.

nightshift1··on New Adaptive Optics Shows Stunning Details of Our Star's Atmosphere
Impressive but the article does not mention at all what kind of improvement was made to achieve those pictures. Only :

> the adaptive optics system responsible for these new images—compensates for the blur caused by air turbulence in the Earth’s atmosphere —similar to the bumpy air passengers feel during a flight.

Ai slop

nightshift1··on Dilbert creator Scott Adams says he will die soon from same cancer as Joe Biden

nightshift1··on Windows debloat script made by Microsoft
There are indeed many other alternatives that are more complete, but they always bundle or make you download an opaque binary file.
nightshift1··on Meta is killing off its AI-powered Instagram and Facebook profiles
that's crazy ! Do they at least schedule the 3 visits back to back in the same day ?
nightshift1··on Show HN: DnsTrace - Monitor DNS Queries by host processes using BPF
This is great. We need more tools like this that "just works". Right now, it seems like you need to be a full time dev working on a specific problem to take advantage of ebpf.
nightshift1··on Stranded astronauts' capsule heads home without them
I don't think nasa has a concept of "lifeboat" considering there are not enough seats for everyone currently in the iss.
