You can change the default apps, just like you always have to not use Metro apps.
The Start Screen works just like the Start Menu did in terms of searching. Just start typing "notepad" rather than browsing for it.
You're then stuck trying to find out where you had gone wrong with no guidance. The last time was due to an incorrect content type on the post. A coworker accidentally had the key and secret the wrong way around.
Both scenarios has the same error and you're often stuck groping around for a solution.
I haven't done any RoR but I imagine a similar approach would work there.
Given that I'm spending 80% of my time in Visual Studio I definitely spend more time in the Desktop than Metro (on the tablet it's pretty much the opposite), if you're living in Desktop and not launching any Metro apps than you can almost view the Start Screen as a launcher / dashboard. Tapping the windows key to quickly see alerts, tiles and notifications and then typing to find the app you want to launch.
I think Metro can succeed on the desktop but it'll certainly need the appropriate sort of apps to do so and building apps that work well as both a full screen mouse / keyboard app as well as a tablet app is going to be a real challenge.
I'm glad Microsoft listened to people on this one.
IMO this makes sense, if I'm receiving an Azure Usage Report I don't need to see a line item for "Azure CDN" when "CDN" covers it perfectly well.
There's nothing indicated anywhere that there is any change to the Azure brand at all.
No story here, move along.
Having the built in Office apps in Skydrive and the ability to have the same word doc available on every computer as well as the phone is very handy.
I imagine once we see a Release Candidate and the store open it will be a different story, but still far too early.
Here's a post about the process of getting into the store in the future.

In NZ GST is always 15% and always included but because everyone knows this it makes comparison easy.
I don't think the size of the marketplace is the problem, every user has about ten key apps they need on their phone (the trouble being it's a different ten for everyone), but every most of the cases covered will help them a lot.
I expect them to do the same thing with Windows 8 and the store.
The Stephens Island Wren is an excellent example of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephens_Island_Wren
