nielsbot··on Denying Insulin and Meds: Disturbing Pictures of Neglect in ICE Mortality Report
> AFAICT the motte is enforcing immigration law

This is a fig leaf. The motivation is racism. (Trump has deported up to 1M people so far the vast majority of whom have no criminal record.)

This era is a lesson in the nature of power and what people will do to get it. The lesson is: liberal democracy must be continuously defended with positive action.

In the US, both political parties work for Capital, not the workers and do not provide positive action. This leaves an opportunity for fascists to be elected to power by campaigning on solving the problems that arise from unregulated capitalism. What else are voters going to do? Keep voting the a political system that does nothing for them materially? The counter is a government that delivers for citizens. That means: low food and energy prices, healthcare, job security and worker protections, housing affordability, etc. (And I don't want to hear any quibbling cop outs from liberals or centrists or the vote blue crowd about how Kamala was the only sane choice who promised to keep GDP growth above 5% or cancel some modicum of means-tested student loan debt etc.)

So, that's how you get concentration camps after once liberating them.

nielsbot··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
I don’t expect that’s true. I think there is a self-selection for certain personality types (authoritarianism, thrill seeking, military cosplay fantasies, etc.) that make cops more abusive overall than the general population. By what percentage I can’t say.

Edit: seems this is partially true for personality but this study shows a correlation with holding more right wing views. (college students who expected to pursue law enforcement careers) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40768353/

nielsbot··on Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Is a Fucking Doozy
Surely this is a "hook 'em with low prices, then raise them later" scheme--the biggest one yet.

I wonder where the split between self-hosted LLMs (w new more powerful LLM hardware) and hosted LLMs (big iron from an LLM-provider or at your office) will fall. Will there be a future for both? LLMs and other ML tools just with different levels of capability? etc.

Detention centers are run by for-profit companies--caring for prisoners would eat into their bottom line. Seems obvious.
nielsbot··on Palantir's Co-Founder Wants Us Less Judgmental About Deadly Iran School Strike
This is “Iranian Regime Derangement Syndrome”

1. Iran’s strongest weapon is keeping Hormuz closed. 2. Those who want to blow up Iran also influence public support (and government support too, I’d add) 3. The military “excursion” is already incredibly unpopular but that hasn’t stopped Trump or other racist POS Hegseth or even all the GOP and even some dems from keeping it going.

Absolutely the Iranian government murdered protesters but it’s a stretch to also say they’d “happily” somehow get the US the bomb a school.

It’s a dumb strategy anyway. We’re still blowing up kids in Gaza and calling them future terrorists and crisis actors and saying “what about their pre-existing health conditions” about kids who died of starvation.

Yes, we are the baddies.

nielsbot··on Palantir's Co-Founder Wants Us Less Judgmental About Deadly Iran School Strike
> Iran’s leaders “might have purposely disguised some of these things to make them look like targets, the same way the Palestinians and others do,” Lonsdale said.

Ah—the old “murder our kids for sympathy” ploy. which has worked… when?

What an absolute murderous and racist piece shit this guy is.

healthcare isn’t really a market economy and neither should it be.

we should make it a public a service without a profit motive

nielsbot··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Replying again to say: A union isn't the real objective. Greater share of profits and more democracy in the workplace is. So maybe that's union-shaped or maybe something else.
nielsbot··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Start as a union shop? Or a cooperative? (see peer comment) Good question--not sure at what size it makes sense to have a union? Is it 1 employee?
nielsbot··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
> desperate to get out of the squid games and quarterly layoff fears

"If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results, employee morale will decrease. I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world."

— Satoru Iwata (former Nintendo CEO)

nielsbot··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Too bad they weren't unionized--I assume that would have helped.

The workers who built the company and created its worth (obviously not evenly distributed) now get a "thank you very much goodbye" e-mail. I think they deserve ownership and to take part in these decisions.

nielsbot··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
When companies can afford to build a native app but instead use a WOSE (write once suck everywhere) toolkit, it’s because they don’t care about the user experience.

similarly, Einstein's Dreams is a collection of very short stories that explore different flavors of time. For example: time slows as you near the city center - those who approach it end up frozen forever like the event horizon of a black hole.
