nielsbjerg··on Show HN: Files.md – Open-source alternative to Obsidian
There's also https://logseq.com/
nielsbjerg··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust (2020)
Databases and traffic is going to have your lunch anyway. Good developers cost a good deal more than extra infrastructure. Adding people to help you cut cloud cost is easier and more predictable than re-implementing.
nielsbjerg··on Scientists Use Recycled Sewage Water to Grow 500-Acre Forest in the Desert
What a brilliant idea. I wonder if the same method would be applicable for growing rice in dry areas?
nielsbjerg··on The Antarctic Ozone Hole Will Recover (2015)
I remeber reading recent news about CFC emmittance raising in China recently. Does anyone know of a more recent study than the one linked here?
nielsbjerg··on Million WebSockets and Go (2017)
I’d then have node handle the “simple” socket part, and the complexity which is race condition prone, handled by a language better suited for that, responding to the async node implementation? Edit: spelling
nielsbjerg··on Million WebSockets and Go (2017)
Productivity in this case being in the eye of the beholder? I’d argue that people experienced in how node works, wouldn’t have to think too much, since async is the default. I agree with your general sentiment though.
nielsbjerg··on My Laptop Bit Me – The Shocking Truth (2012)
Does not have to be copper. I've done several of these using galvanized steel hammered into the ground. We'd hammer in rods of 2 meters length until the resistance was low enough (around 1600 ohms Iirc). This would ensure hpfi tripped below 50mA
nielsbjerg··on Google cans the Chromecast Audio
They are shutting down inbox though. I know the mail will stay, but I will miss inbox.
nielsbjerg··on I’m a Developer. I Won’t Teach My Kids to Code, and Neither Should You
Kid brains are a sponge. I don't get why the author is either or in his mindset. Sure problem solving and curiosity are more important than syntax, but there is ample room for both.
nielsbjerg··on Ask HN: Can you recommend a modern, accessible P2P framework/library?
This guy mad a lot of easy to use libraries https://github.com/mafintosh in nodejs, so don't know if they are useful to you
nielsbjerg··on Thanks for the Surprise Integration with My Website, Apple
What would be the point of the passive agressive behaviour? If the intention is to get Apple to pony up some cash, he should reach out directly to them with valid concerns over traffic etc. If the point is self-promotion, he inadvertently got that now. I think the approach chosen is the right one
nielsbjerg··on Stacking concrete blocks is a surprisingly efficient way to store energy
Why not use a single mega block, and hydrolics? Seems to me there would be less mechanical wear, and the system would be simpler?
nielsbjerg··on A new form of carbon, schwartzites, has been created
How about using outline or similar to remove unwanted content? https://outline.com/nRwFNF
nielsbjerg··on Hello, GitHub
How so? What was going to be controlled, by whom?
nielsbjerg··on California Votes to Require Rooftop Solar Power on New Homes
It's not automatically a bad idea, just because it's not changing the entire world. E.g. me choosing not to fly is not making any significant difference, but that does not change the fact that my carbon footprint is lower as a result. If I choose to share my motivation for not flying, it may affect others flying habits. The same could be the case for California
nielsbjerg··on Bike Share Oversupply in China
The image where a person is walking on a stack of them getting some rope. The image where a person bikes by a tall stack of bikes. For a lot of the properly parked ones, I assume you are right.
nielsbjerg··on Bike Share Oversupply in China
Even if we don't drive our cars all the time, we don't throw them into a pile and break them. We take care of our cars, keeping them for years, and when they are no longer used, they are recycled.
nielsbjerg··on Bike Share Oversupply in China
What an absolute waste of resources. We should get these bikes to people with real need - imagine what this would mean for a family who need to walk for hours for water or education.
nielsbjerg··on Facebook to ask everyone to accept being tracked so they can keep using it
My guess is bad purchase tracking
nielsbjerg··on Blocklist Facebook domains
Again, a tool concern. Not trying to downplay the possible solutions, but rather bring attention to the magnetude
nielsbjerg··on Blocklist Facebook domains
The whole conversation, without having read into everything here in absolute detail, seem to be very tool oriented. Am I the only one here overwhelmed by the sheer amount of domains involved?

nielsbjerg··on Google's Machine Learning Software Has Learned to Replicate Itself
Made me think of this nicely written piece, 'the last invention of man': https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15419619
nielsbjerg··on A “negative emissions” plant has opened in Iceland
One could even go as far as to say, that we're successful in doing just that. Only in the opposite direction of what we've discovered to be necessary.
nielsbjerg··on Elon Musk says he will perform same tasks as injured workers in the factory
Or you could focus on the positive part - that he actually cares, and shows interest in learning more about the problem to better understand how to solve it.

nielsbjerg··on There Have Probably Been Aliens
It was indeed the thousand separator which confused me, thanks
nielsbjerg··on There Have Probably Been Aliens
You got the units of the borehole wrong, it's in meters not kilometers.
nielsbjerg··on How a Legal Journalist Got Fired for a Non-Compete
In Denmark if the company you're leaving wants to uphold the non compete, they're obliged to pay half of your salary for the duration of the clause.

FWIW I've been under non compete, and a couple of other clauses in all of my previous jobs, but they were never enforced. The legal power of non compete in Denmark is from my observations very weak. So much so, that an employer of mine vaived all clauses after a while since it was a bigger hindrance when hiring people than benefit when people left.

My first thought as well. It has been seen before http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4396831.stm
