niea_11··on A Primer in BERTology: What We Know About How Bert Works
I agree with you on the fact that humans can cope with lack of detailed knowledge to do things. But I think your programming analogy doesn't apply to this situation.

In your analogy, there is me the programmer and the library's programmer. If the library has a consistent behavior, I need only to know how to use it, I don't need to know how it works internally. But the library's programmer needs to know how it works. He may not need to know how the building blocks, he's using in his library, work. but he does need to know how they interact to be able to deliver new features and bugfixes. (I think) He can't add features and correct bugs by trial and error (at least not all the time :)) .

So In your analogy, I think the researchers that came up with the BERT model are the library's programmer and not the programmer.

Can anyone please explain (in layman terms if it's possible) how did the researchers come up with the method in the first place if the process how the method finds the answers is not understood?

About the way of eating : The explanation of the first guy is correct (using three fingers).

But most of the time you don't use your bare fingers directly, you use bread to grab the food. You do something similar to this video [1].

For other dishes (Pastilla, couscous) you use your bare fingers. For couscous, the technique is a little bit difficult, you have to form a ball in your hand [2].

niea_11··on 750M genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida
Sterility is just one example of gene modification.

A harmful modification that doesn't cause sterility will propagate across generations if the indivuals are able to reproduce.

For example a scenario where we see the symptoms but we don't know that they are caused by a gene modification. And where individuals are still able to live and have children.

And I'm not saying that the tech is bad. I'm sure that people can come up with a lot of good use cases.

niea_11··on 750M genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida
I think @reedf1 is talking about the long term damage to a population.

With the gene drive technology, the modified gene is always inherited.

the 750 million number is there to speed up the process.

(This my understanding from reading the first few paragraphs from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_drive)

niea_11··on Edsger Dijkstra – The Man Who Carried Computer Science on His Shoulders
I did a quick search and according to this article [1], dijkstra's implementation was not restricted compared to other implementations at the time :

It is Dijkstra's generalizing style which stands out when a comparison is made with the work of his contemporaries. Rutishauser, for example, had limited the order of his procedure activations in his run-time system [59], while Dijkstra had no such restriction. Floyd's work [60, p.42-43] relied on three specialized “yo-yo” lists (i.e., stacks) instead of one general stack. Likewise, the MAD translator [61, p.28] used several specialized tables. Also, and most importantly, the ALCOR compilers were severely restricted in that they could not handle several ALGOL60 language constructs, including the recursive procedure (cf. Section ). Finally, though the Irons-Feurzeig system [54] did implement recursive-procedure activations and by means of one general run-time stack, it was, in the interest of efficiency, sophisticated in its run-time capabilities and, hence, unlike the run-time system of Dijkstra and Zonneveld .

niea_11··on Analysis of SwissCovid app
You are correct about battery usage. The analysis they published[1] mentions this (in the 2nd paragraph of the introduction) :

"One difficulty of using Bluetooth in phones is that the operating system does not allow apps running in the background to use the Bluetooth advertising system. Hence, to do so,either the app must stay in the foreground, which drains the battery a lot, or the operating system must be changed. Apple and Google allied to provide a standard Bluetooth API which would not drain the battery. Hence, automated contact tracing apps must either be complian twith this API or make the user upset about heavy battery usage."

Singapore's TraceTogether app doesn't use GAEN api and does have this issue [2].

France's StopCovid app uses a different protocol called ROBERT[3], and they asked Apple to allow their app to run in the background[4]. So they also have battery issues.

niea_11··on Analysis of SwissCovid app
They argue that GAEN is part of the Play Services on Android. And that the app was designed to work at first with DP3T protocol which (I'm not sure) requires only access to bluetooth on the device. But DP3T was replaced with GAEN.

(This just my understanding from the web page and wikipedia, I'm not familiar with all of this :) )

To justify such exclusion, SwissCovid promoters argue that GAEN is part of the operating system of the phone, or sometimes part of the Bluetooth communication interface of the phone, and that it is not common to require to disclose the source code of such parts. We deny that GAEN is any such part of the phone, at least on Android phones. GAEN is part of the Google Play Services which are independent of the operating system and of the communication interfaces. We could actually run a pre-standard version of SwissCovid on an Android phone which had no Google Play Services. However, this phone had the Android operating system and could use Bluetooth. Furthermore, most of the former DP3T protocol which was implemented in this pre-standard version disappeared in the current version of the app since an equivalent protocol is now in GAEN. We conclude that there is no founded technical justification for excluding GAEN from the components of the system.

niea_11··on Chrome phasing out support for User-Agent
If you want to just change the styling and layout of the page depending on the user's device, then you can use css's media queries[0]. But if you want to serve two totally different pages (one for mobile and another for desktop), then I don't see how it can be done without JS or reading the user agent.

niea_11··on U.S. Government official: Coronavirus vaccine trial starts Monday
I thought that no vaccine was developed for SARS and MERS because the diseases disappeared, so : not enough volunteers to test the vaccines, and also companies lost interest.

from an npr interview[1] :

BRIGHT: Unfortunately, when the virus disappeared, the funding tended to disappear with it. And the companies that were making a SARS virus vaccine lost interest and shipped it back to their more profitable vaccines.

niea_11··on Realtime Tokyo 3D train map using open API
I don't think the 2d version is in realtime. I checked on google maps the journey from Shinjuku to Yotsuya on the red line is 11 min long, but on the 2d map the train does it in less than 10s. Plus, each time you reset the page, the positions of the trains are reset. Still it's cool way to see the activiy on the subway network.

Apparently the meaning doesn't come from the verb but from the italian word : "compositore" (according to wikitionary [1] and the larousse dictionary [2])

(again in [1]) "compositore" from italian is equivalent to "compositeur" in french which can mean "a person that writes music" but can also mean "a typographer or compositor".

niea_11··on Paris Will Make Public Transportation Free for Kids
That is a line that I always try to avoid :). I was forced to use it for a short period of time, but I was lucky, I traveled only on the section from Montparnasse to Chatillion which, I think, is not as busy as the rest of the line because most passengers transfer to other lines at montparnasse.
niea_11··on Paris Will Make Public Transportation Free for Kids
I used to take the metro line 3 from station saint-lazare. At peak hours there was a train practically every minute. As soon as one train leaves another one enters the station a few seconds after. So I often did what parent said. skipping two or three trains isn't that bad when there that many trains.
