nicpottier··on Wi-Fi Goes Long Range on New WiLo Standard
This looks to be about running LoRa like networks on WiFi hardware. Speed on LoRa is not something talked about much as it is more like SMS message passing or the like than IP networking.
nicpottier··on Backlash over Amazon's return to office comes as workers demand higher wages
We are talking about Amazon engineers here. They are in the top 3% of earners, I don't think we need to cry too many tears about them going back to the office.
nicpottier··on New technology could reduce the amount of energy for air conditioning
These do exist but are indeed complicated. Still pretty new. Usually used with hydronic systems.
nicpottier··on HTML5 Differences from HTML4 (2014)
I built an early site using those techniques in oh, 1996 I think? (stomped.com) Using zero border/padding tables was a clever way at the time of accomplishing a fancy graphics tab/menu without resorting to calling a CGI script.
nicpottier··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
This looks quite nice, thank you for releasing it open source. Also neat to see a real Flutter app in the wild, this seems like a great use case for it. Would love to read your experience building something polished across ios/android on Flutter.

One note as I signed up for an account is that the email verification went to gmails spam. Probably nothing to be done about that but mentioning it.

I would also add an "authy" option when importing that just goes to an explanation of why it isn't possible and steps you can take to create new tokens etc.

In any case, well done and thank you!

nicpottier··on Animal-free egg protein startup Onego Bio is closer to cracking the egg market
I'm vegan and athletic. I get about .7g/lb of protein a day which by most any measure is enough for anybody save people doing steroids.

People approach veganism as "take out the meat", which leads to nutritional deficiencies. You can't do that, you basically have to reboot the way you eat. I tracked all my food for months when switching to learn what mix of foods gave me the nutrition I needed. Now it is habit and pretty easy. The only new thing I supplement with is vitamin B12 and a protein shake after workouts. (I did the protein shake before being vegan so no change there)

It isn't miserable at all, we love how we eat.

nicpottier··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
What in the world do you do? 300 rentals a year and you are range limited on those trips? Genuinely interested just can't even imagine your life!
nicpottier··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
Strange, I get the right answer on GPT4

> If the word "push" is written in mirror writing and you are seeing it from your side of the glass door, you should pull the door towards you. The reason for this is that the instruction is intended for people on the other side of the door. For them, the word "push" would appear correctly, instructing them to push the door to open it from their side. Since you are seeing it in reverse, it implies you are on the opposite side, and the correct action for you would be to pull the door to open it.

nicpottier··on Lilygo T-Deck: 2.8-inch IPS LCD display, mini keyboard, and ESP32 processor
Lilygo makes a ton of really fun ESP32 dev boards. I've used various ones in projects and it is pretty crazy what you can get for not much money. They are constantly churning out new, weird form factors: https://www.lilygo.cc/collections/new
nicpottier··on Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite Performance Preview: A First Look at What's to Come
Looks promising. Can we get one of these in a Framework laptop now?
nicpottier··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
They aren't as good at long distances, you have that part right. Your numbers could be debated but are close enough. Most people don't drive long distances on the regular though.

They are MUCH better for day to day if you can charge at your home. You always start the day with a full battery. I only use a supercharger on long trips. Note that I actually drive farther than most for various reasons but that route has a supercharger at a grocery store. I tend to come back at the end of the weekend and do my shopping at the same time, so in reality I don't spend any time refueling.

So total yearly time where you are actively "fueling" your vehicle in a supervised manner favors EVs for the vast majority of people.

nicpottier··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
I used to feel the same way but Flutter is hardly a new technology anymore yet still seems to be used very little. I've dabbled with it on hobby projects here and there and it seems "fine" but not sure I'd bet the farm on it.
nicpottier··on An airline said her bag was lost, her tracker said otherwise. She flew to get it
Where are you flying? I've never lost a bag outright but I've had bags delayed by days or weeks on maybe 5% of flights. I tend to go to places off the beaten path though.

If at all possible I use carry on only.

nicpottier··on Flux Pinning in sample of LK-99?
Have you watched other videos of flux pinning? This sure looks like those to me, it's a weird phenomenon.
nicpottier··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
What's the service? asking for a friend.
nicpottier··on First new US nuclear reactor in decades enters commercial operation in Georgia
Source?

I like hydro but this is not at all what people I know working in this field believe to be true.

nicpottier··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
I think it's basically some PM taking a stand at Tesla with the fact that there's just no good estimate possible without knowing the route, so they will always show EPA estimate.

Any sane a Tesla driver changes that to show percent battery instead of range.

As others have said the trip planner is excellent, within a percent or two even in winter conditions driving over passes etc..

Note that range changes a lot more due to elevation, speed, cold etc, compared to gas cars because electrics are so much more efficient.

nicpottier··on Notes on Puzzles
Hah, what a great article.

I play chess (poorly for the time spent on it) and I'm also a reasonably successful founder of a couple software companies. I find my struggle with chess is that I want to act intuitively, something that has served me well all my life in other avenues. But the board doesn't lie and if you don't think thoroughly you will get punished.

I have the capacity for it, I can think thoroughly in puzzles and perform much better there than my on board play but I just struggle so much with the discipline during regular games to falsify my moves. So much so that I've mostly given up on trying to improve despite really loving the game, it just grates on me. I know I could be better but I lack the discipline and I guess I just don't want to exercise that discipline in a game.

Anyways, great article.

nicpottier··on Psilocybin Was the Biggest Mistake of My Life (2021)
Damnit, yes. Thank you.
nicpottier··on Psilocybin Was the Biggest Mistake of My Life (2021)
They buried the lead..

"You may not think it will happen to you. But drug-induced mania and drug-induced psychosis are well-documented phenomena. They should not be dismissed or waved off as fear-mongering. This applies to cannabis, cocaine, alcohol, and even antidepressants."

nicpottier··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
I'm interested but $100/yr kind of sounds like a lot. Is it free to host? I wouldn't mind building up credits for a road trip later if I didn't have to pay. Also maybe a monthly price would make more sense as I tend to be on the road only for periods at a time. (or maybe even a per-booking fee?)

Anyways, yearly sub is kind of a non-starter for me though I like the concept.

nicpottier··on GPT-4 details leaked?
To be fair the latter has the meat of it behind a paywall.
nicpottier··on How the new Threads app is made
It is a bit weird.

I've been toying with all the various Twitter alternatives as they have had their 5 minutes of fame and Threads definitely feels different and like it might stick.

That feels like very big news but not to HN I guess?

nicpottier··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
Not sure how early we are talking with Amazon but I was there in '99 and that was not the case then, nor did I ever hear of such a thing. Not that I have lots of positive things to say about Bezos but he knew what the site was doing and would never have been so easily fooled.
nicpottier··on Why did Usenet fail?
Woah, I remember playing BRE, which must have been close to 30 years ago. Impressed the author still has a site for it much less that you can purchase it!
nicpottier··on Fire Sale: $300M San Francisco Office Tower, Mostly Empty
Office buildings are often tricky to turn into apartments. Too much interior space, not enough windows. But I agree someone should look into it!
nicpottier··on Google will add E2E encryption to Authenticator backups
My understanding is they encrypt your database with a password before syncing to the cloud. They don't sync the password and there's no recovery.
nicpottier··on GPT-3 Creative Fiction (2020)
I really appreciate the look and also am interested in the content but I find this presentation super difficult to read for some reason. Maybe the text is too big and spaced out? I can't really explain it but it exhausts me just looking at it. Very weird.
nicpottier··on ChatPDF – Chat with Any PDF
FAQ makes it clear this is just calculating embeddings for sections then doing vector queries to find relevant sections augment the context based on your interactions. IE, it doesn't (and can't due to context window limitations inherent to GPT) truly ingest a large PDF at once.

This seems like it would work reasonably well for a PDF that's a knowledge base or for very directed questions but isn't going to do great for summaries, etc..

nicpottier··on Clock
Hah, came here to say the same. instant anxiety for some reason!
