nicolaslem··on Teardown of Apple 40W dynamic power adapter with 60W max
I don't think that's it because I have seen some reports of this behavior online with the official charger.
nicolaslem··on Teardown of Apple 40W dynamic power adapter with 60W max
I have this laptop and this is so frustrating. I am hoping that they can fix this with a firmware update.
nicolaslem··on The Rise and Fall of the British Detective Novel (2010)
In case you are not aware, most of the titles discussed in the article are available for free as high quality ebooks at https://standardebooks.org because they are in the public domain. I have read way too many detective novels since discovering this website.
nicolaslem··on macOS Tahoe
I have this laptop with this display configuration and it looks amazing. However on Arch with Gnome/Wayland I cannot get color management to work, which is a problem since this display has such a wide gamut. Opening HN on it for the first time I was blinded by the deepest orange nav bar I could imagine.
nicolaslem··on Framework Laptop 16
I would recommend not wasting time with ollama, https://github.com/containers/ramalama just works on that chip.
nicolaslem··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
It is HP, and the output of the provided adapter does 28V 5A, so in spec.

With some of the other 28V 5A adapters I have, it charges until triggering a compute heavy task and then stops. I have seen reports online of people seeing this behavior with the official adapter. My theory is that the laptop itself does not accept any ripple at all.

I also have a Strix Halo zbook G1A and I am quite disappointed in the idle power consumption as it hovers around 8W.

Adding to that, it is very picky about which power brick it accepts (not every 140W PD compliant works) and the one that comes with the laptop is bulky and heavy. I am used to plugging my laptop into whatever USB-C PD adapter is around, down to 20W phone chargers. Having the zbook refuse to charge on them is a big downgrade for me.

nicolaslem··on GPT-OSS vs. Qwen3 and a detailed look how things evolved since GPT-2
I had the same issue with other models where they would loop repeating the same character, sentence or paragraph indefinitely. Turns out the context size some tools set by default is 2k and this is way too small.
nicolaslem··on Benchmark Framework Desktop Mainboard and 4-node cluster
I gave it a try on my Strix Halo laptop on Arch. ROCm and everything else worked out of the box with two commands:

    uv tool install ramalama
    ramalama serve <model>
nicolaslem··on Python performance myths and fairy tales
This. I maintain an ecommerce platform written in Python. Even with Python being slow, less than 30% of our request time is spent executing code, the rest is talking to stuff over the network.
nicolaslem··on Try the Mosquito Bucket of Death
I ended up building this entirely by accident. Last summer I wanted to have aquatic plants in my garden, so I made a small container pond.

As you can imagine it quickly got invaded by mosquito larvae. By the time I realized I was getting raided by mosquitos each night, much more than previous years.

After getting hold of the bacteria (not sure if it's completely allowed here, only Amazon would sell it to me) mosquitos are completely gone, in the pond and around.

nicolaslem··on We benchmarked Cyberpunk 2077 on Mac M1 to M4 – the numbers don't lie
> I wouldn't go near the PC version of Elden Ring

What's wrong with the PC version of Elden Ring? Of course it needs to be played with a controller but that's hardly a problem.

nicolaslem··on Sony DTC-700 audio DAT player/recorder
I vividly remember the day when at age 10 my grandfather let me disassemble a broken VCR. It is the day I learned to treat electronics with large capacitors with respect.
nicolaslem··on Start your own Internet Resiliency Club
I don't disagree with that, but this point has nothing to do with the comment I replied to.
nicolaslem··on Start your own Internet Resiliency Club
The price of solar panels and batteries keeps falling. You can go an Amazon today and get a setup that can power a switch/router/AP 24/7 in winter for a few hundred dollars.
nicolaslem··on BYD's Five-Minute Charging Puts China in the Lead for EVs
A good rule of thumbs with most battery chemistries is that they tend to not like both extremes. This is true for temperature, charge capacity, slightly less true for charging current as very low current tend not to degrade the battery.
nicolaslem··on Intel versus AMD is currently an emotional decision for me
Ryzen 6000 series user here. I run Arch and the past three years have been a roller-coaster. Suspend/resume works well but the amdgpu crashes are a constant pain. Sometimes it works well for a few weeks, until a kernel update introduces a regression. Regression that gets fixed after a few weeks. Rince and repeat for the past three years. I am seriously considering Intel for my next laptop.
nicolaslem··on At Amazon, some coders say their jobs have begun to resemble warehouse work
In Poland and neighboring countries, Amazon has some serious competition from Allegro.
nicolaslem··on Duolingo deletes TikTok videos after AI backlash, returns with a message
It is a message intended for investors, not end users.
nicolaslem··on Building my own solar power system
It is always surprising to me but small loads that are on 24/7 end up consuming a ton of energy. My 55W idle "homelab" consumes as much energy as my dishwasher, fridge and washing machine combined.
nicolaslem··on CarPlay Ultra, the next generation of CarPlay, begins rolling out today
Gauges I agree. Infotainment, who cares? It's not like CarPlay today is perfect. It routinely crashes on me mid-drive and requires a series of reboots to go back to working conditions.
nicolaslem··on CarPlay Ultra, the next generation of CarPlay, begins rolling out today
Do you know what would be better than CarPlay? An open protocol. It's my phone and my car, why do I need both companies' blessings for connecting them?
nicolaslem··on JetBrains defends removal of negative reviews for unpopular AI Assistant
I never managed to get anything out of Junie. Each of my queries end up with an internal process stuck on a loop eating 100% CPU until I kill it. Back to Windsurf for now which is disappointing because I much prefer PyCharm for everything else.
nicolaslem··on How to quickly charge your smartphone: fast charging technologies in detail
You may already know this but getting 12V out of a 15V PD is relatively straightforward with either a linear regulator (less ripple but less efficient) or a buck converter (more ripple but more efficient). The Internet is full of very inexpensive boards that do all that.
nicolaslem··on How to quickly charge your smartphone: fast charging technologies in detail
This does not make sense as PD needs to negotiate with the device to get anything more than 5V. Putting random cables in your mouth won't result in getting 12V or even the 48V that PD can output.
nicolaslem··on Milwaukee M18 Battery Reverse Engineering
Fun fact, DeWalt 18/20V batteries also don't have balancing. The batteries have pins going to each cell for it but no chargers actually use them.
nicolaslem··on Show HN: Domika – A Native Mobile App for Home Assistant
As someone who is routinely impressed by Home Assistant and its official iOS app, I think you will have a tough time convincing users to switch.

> For comparison, Home Assistant’s Nabu Casa service costs several times more.

Undercutting Home Assistant's added services on price doesn't feel particularly elegant since this is what they use to fund HA development.

nicolaslem··on Z-Wave is remaking itself into an open source protocol
Yes, the price tag is high but on the other hand they are super reliable. I have one on my water boiler that triggered its relay many times per day for five years and measured dozens of MWh.
nicolaslem··on Z-Wave is remaking itself into an open source protocol
Does this mean we will finally get a Z-Wave enabled ESP32?
nicolaslem··on Charging electric vehicles 5x faster in subfreezing temps
Most consumer LiFePO4 power stations have this sensor and cut charging below 0C, still allowing discharge up to around -10C.
