nicolashahn··on Federal agency tells SF workers to work from home due to unsafe conditions
The city has consistently shown they're unwilling to do this.

Getting a CCW is something you as a citizen can do now. Personally, I'm in favor of having an option other than being a victim.

nicolashahn··on Federal agency tells SF workers to work from home due to unsafe conditions
I know that several average (non-connected) people have received their CCW issued by San Francisco, which would be absolutely unheard of before Bruen.

nicolashahn··on Federal agency tells SF workers to work from home due to unsafe conditions
Should we take them away from the cops as well, so only criminals can have them? Or should we allow law abiding citizens to defend themselves, so you have an option other than becoming a victim?

A few months ago the Supreme Court forced CA counties to begin issuing concealed carry weapon permits: https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/legal-alert-oag-2022-0.... Previously it was up to the discretion of the county's sheriff to issue them, which meant only well-connected people had them.

More armed citizens isn't the ultimate solution (people need mental and financial help) but it's better than the current situation.

nicolashahn··on Is Reviving a Private Police Agency in SF the Solution to the City’s Crime Woes?
A few months ago the Supreme Court forced CA counties to begin issuing concealed carry weapon permits: https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2022-06-23/supreme-co.... Previously it was up to the discretion of the county's sheriff to issue them, which meant only well-connected people had them.

This could provide a deterrent effect once SF gets saturated with concealed carry permit holders. I'm assuming not though since most of the crime is non-robbery theft, where use of deadly force wouldn't be justified.

nicolashahn··on Llama 2
I asked llama2 why I should use it over chatgpt:

" llama2 and chatgpt are both powerful language models, but they have some key differences that may make one more suitable for your needs than the other.

llama2 is a more recent model, and it has been specifically designed for conversational AI tasks, such as answering questions and engaging in dialogue. It has been trained on a large dataset of text from the internet and is able to generate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and prompts. Additionally, llama2 has been designed to be more interactive and engaging, and it can respond to questions and prompts in a more natural and human-like way.

chatgpt, on the other hand, is a more general-purpose language model that has been trained on a wide range of text data, including books, articles, and websites. It is able to generate human-like text in a variety of styles and formats, and it has been used for a wide range of tasks, such as writing articles, creating chatbots, and generating creative content.

So, the main difference between llama2 and chatgpt is that llama2 is specifically designed for conversational AI tasks, while chatgpt is a more general-purpose language model. If you are looking for a model that can engage in natural-sounding conversations and respond to questions in a human-like way, then llama2 may be the better choice. However, if you are looking for a more general-purpose language model that can generate text in a variety of styles and formats, then chatgpt may be the better choice. "

nicolashahn··on Generative AI Can Save You Hours at Your Tech Job
All? Definitely not.

Some? Yes. I f**ing love toilets.

nicolashahn··on Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over Threads [pdf]
True, I think if they fought today Zuck would win. However, given enough training, Musk can close the gap. If he trained hard and they fought a year from now I'd put money on Musk, hands down.
nicolashahn··on Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over Threads [pdf]
Musk has like 6 inches and 60lbs on Zuck
nicolashahn··on San Francisco may soon get 24/7 driverless cabs. City leaders are fuming
The thing is you can use all of these for different use cases.

I have a car which I take to anywhere I can park easily (which is a lot of places in the city if you avoid downtown).

I don't own a bike but I know many who do, and just take it inside with them. Roads are dangerous for bikers but not moreso than every other city in the country.

I use uber/lyft only when I know I'm not going to be sober, which isn't that often (once a weekish).

Plenty of people I know use public transit, though only some routes are useful/safe.

Self driving cars are still very early days and I'm sure they'll work out the technical issues. The fact that they're owned by big tech isn't a problem for me and most other people.

nicolashahn··on Coworking from Home
It's a joke but a huge difference between this and an office is you only have to be around the coworkers you like
nicolashahn··on Scientists find ‘plastic rocks’ on remote island
Spicy take, but isn't this kind of a blessing in disguise? Plastic in this form wouldn't be disturbing the ecosystem as much. This is better than microplastics being found in fish or choking turtles.
nicolashahn··on Facebook parent plans new job cuts that could match last year’s tally
This felt especially like a middle finger to employees because it boosted the stock price exactly during the 1 week window that determines how many new RSUs will be given to employees as refreshers for the year. Higher price = less shares. Had the stock not rocketed before the window, employees would have gotten ~20% more shares.

nicolashahn··on Meta reportedly plans more job cuts
Official perf reviews recently switched to yearly, but there's a "touchpoint" every three months, which is just a very light perf review with no ratings/direct outcomes until the annual one
nicolashahn··on Why Tipping Is Impossible to Get Rid of in America
Terrible idea. What incentive do restaurants have to increase their wages to make up for lack of tips? They restaurant owners are already not getting the tip money. Net effect is just going to be poorer servers and richer restaurant owners.
nicolashahn··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Kotlin. Seems like the true successor to Java rather than Go. Comparable speed but much more enjoyable than Go due better type system, quality of life features, and the massive ecosystem of Java.
nicolashahn··on OpenAI's Woke Catechism
There could definitely be some hardcoded rules to trigger a message like that that aren't part of the ML model.
nicolashahn··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2022?
Not tech related but the Always Sunny in Philadelphia podcast. Just a bunch of funny people being funny live rather than scripted.

nicolashahn··on Airtable lays off over 250
When layoffs are common, a new one isn't news. It's a great time for companies to offload unproductive employees. If they did layoffs during a bull market it'd draw a lot of attention and negative PR.
nicolashahn··on Is Carvana going out of business? The 'Amazon' of cars tumbles
> Despite the concentration of highly intelligent and educated folks who make up the stock traders of the world... they make remarkably bad bets on the future of markets more often than not.

Looking forward to seeing how well this ages wrt Carvana.

nicolashahn··on Ask HN: Experienced devs, what language would you learn today?
Interesting, I was going to come here to say the exact same thing. Rust if you need the performance/low level features, Kotlin if not. I think Kotlin's niche overlaps with Go but just so much more pleasant to use, I really wish it were more popular.
nicolashahn··on TikTok and the First Amendment
Tiktok is not banned in China, it's just rebranded as Douyin.
nicolashahn··on TikTok and the First Amendment
Realistically I think most of the TikTok content creators would go over to Reels and the net effect on attention-destroying time-wasting would be small.
nicolashahn··on Proposed class action alleges that Apple tracks users despite privacy assurances
Meta has swung hard in the other direction. Now privacy reviews are so comprehensive that development speed is significantly hampered. Some teams say they're half as productive as they were before the privacy-first changes. Meta seriously does not want to make the same mistake again. Source: I'm an engineer at Meta.
