Materially, we've never had it better.

Spiritually, we are in a deep crisis.

nicky0··on Apple developer boycott of Feedback Assistant
That guy Quinn "The Eskimo" seems to have been almost singlehandedly manning the developer forums at Apple for over a decade. I hope Apple recognises how valuable he is.
nicky0··on Apple's called Android a "massive tracking device" in an internal presentation
That's somewhat in the nature of a tracking device.
nicky0··on Electric mountain: Power station that shows the beauty of infrastructure
Are you referring to the Windscale fire of 1957, or something else?

I remember visiting the Sellafield visitor centre as a kid in the 1990s. It was great.

Maybe also set fire to the computer to make double sure.
nicky0··on Do Unforgettable Work
It's just bizarre. People nodding along be like, yup, this is normal sane behaviour, taking notes.

Wait, what?

nicky0··on GPT-4 is getting worse over time, not better
Because you are getting value from it. Why else would you pay?

Wut? Perhaps don't post your comments based on the headline only.
nicky0··on Apple removes $99 dev account requirement for first iOS 17 and macOS 14 betas

nicky0··on Updates to Kagi pricing plans – More searches, unrestricted AI tools
If the page is not cached by the browser, but its instead reloaded from the Kagi server then it would be a new search.
nicky0··on Updates to Kagi pricing plans – More searches, unrestricted AI tools
Kagi has good quality search results (better than Google in many cases), works well and has no ads or promoted content. I'm personally not using it for extreme privacy / anonymity reasons, I just want a good experience using the search engine.

Yes! I await the 1 hour youtube video with great interest

You certainly raise some valid points about the evolution of Hacker News, and indeed many other digital spaces. Minimalism and content-focus have traditionally been valued in certain corners of the internet. For these spaces, adding a favicon or any other aesthetic elements can be perceived as a step away from these principles.

However, it's important to remember that design and aesthetics are also a part of the user experience, and can contribute to usability and accessibility. A favicon, for instance, can make it easier to distinguish between tabs in a browser, improving navigation and efficiency. While it's true that overdoing it with design elements can lead to clutter and distract from the content, there is a balance to be struck.

Your concerns about this being a slippery slope towards a more ad-heavy, visually cluttered site are understandable. However, it's also possible that the addition of a favicon is merely a small design tweak to improve usability, rather than a sign of a larger shift in priorities.

Ultimately, it's crucial that the community voices these concerns and helps steer the direction of the platform. After all, it's the users who make a platform like Hacker News what it is, and their input should be valued and considered.

Behaving unauthentically is a form of masking that some of is learn to do because we receive the msssage that certain behaviour is not accepted.
nicky0··on “Twitter is going great” is being sunset
The old blue checks are grieving that they no longer have special treatment and their voices are no longer elevated. They are now just like the common plebs. It's an adjustment process.
nicky0··on “Twitter is going great” is being sunset
Well it's subjective I guess. For me personally I'm finding Twitter more fun and engaging than I used to. It's less preachy somehow.
nicky0··on “Twitter is going great” is being sunset
Seems the previously amplified "notable" voices have self-selected themselves out of the blue checks because they refuse to buy them. I see a lot of "I'll never pay a single cent to elon" sentiment from the former anointed ones.
nicky0··on “Twitter is going great” is being sunset
My reading is that the author had a moment of self awareness and realised maintaining a barely-trafficked site essentially powered by their own bitterness was not a healthy or satisfying pastime.
nicky0··on “Twitter is going great” is being sunset
But they weren't really tracking changes in Twitter over time in any meaningful or informative way. The were just regurgitating a variety of anti-Elon headlines.
nicky0··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
I have an issue with the Spotify app on the Apple Watch. I’m not sure if it’s an apple or a Spotify problem, but I have loads of trouble when I’m using the watch app to play music when I’m at home, near my phone and near my Wi-Fi network. However if I leave the house and walk away without my phone, leaving the watch to use this 4G connection only, it works flawlessly.

If I come back from my run Spotify will often stop playing as soon as it gets home in range of the phone.
