Interesting. Thank you! I feel like anyone could prob learn a lot from something like this.
nickthemagicman··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal documents?
I see where you're coming from and we're probably getting wayyy in the weeds on this...:)....but I think they mean an insert of item into already existing array is O(1) and from your perspective ..traversal over time would be O(n) so I think y'all might both correct from diff perspectives.

I was thinking increasing insert time would increase Big O but they made the point that it's a constant which will cancel out as n approaches infinity.

God I'm a nerd.

nickthemagicman··on Google Summer of Code in 2022 – No longer limited to students
Is this mainly targeted to younger generations or is it appropriate for fat 40 year old dudes as well?
nickthemagicman··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal documents?
HA. True I guess it just adds a constant to capture time . Good catch.
nickthemagicman··on Unity is buying Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital for $1.6B
Just curious but are the other better game engines like unreal or somesuch? I'm looking into game dev and wondering what to get started on.
nickthemagicman··on Unity is buying Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital for $1.6B
Color me surprised that Unity had 1.6 billion.
nickthemagicman··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal documents?
I do exactly this, except I take a time-stamped photo of it and throw the hard copy away. Google docs automatically turns it into a PDF.

It increases the Big O on capturing it, but reduces space and access complexity.

For long running docs like titles, and certifications, passports, and whatnot I stick in an important papers storage Tupperware so it's safe from water damage

Can you ban me please?

I do really appreciate the warnings and consideration and time here and have no hard feelings at all.

Could you also delete this account and all of it's comments when you do the ban?

I guarantee you I'm not going to change as you can tell by that history. :)

Its an incompatible mindset and I rather just peel the bandaid off now rather than keep upsetting people.

Also it would be nice to have this account gone.

Thank you sir!

Hope y'all's weekend is well.

nickthemagicman··on After months of delay, the House passes infrastructure bill
Absolutely I don't know why power wheels would be left out.

Anytime a human pilots a machine, it increases their risk of injuring another person.

We need to reduce these risks for safety.

nickthemagicman··on After months of delay, the House passes infrastructure bill
Some groups are huge fans of making everything as safe as possible.

This is an exciting win for them.

nickthemagicman··on Pfizer's oral Covid-19 antiviral cuts hospitalization, death by 85%
it seems like kind of a false dichotomy.

1. make drugs without a profit margin available to consumers and researchers

2. go out of business.

It seems like there's plenty of grey area in there.

They're really working on making automobiles a lot safer by installing breathalyzers in every car. Exciting times!

'loads and loads' is kind of not quantitative enough imo.

Not saying you're wrong.

I've just read that Europeans make objectively WAYYYY less than American's in tech jobs to a staggering depressing amount for the same amount of work...

So just rustles my jimmies to see unscientific hearsay rumours about them to make their situation worse.

There's a term for it. It's called Social Cooling.

Medical degree is a generalist. They focus more on pathophysiology than molecular biology.

What you want is a molecular biologist or even better a virologist.

I couldn't even finish reading the article, the prospect sounded so horrifying.

This author is a king.

nickthemagicman··on Our self imposed scarcity of nice places
If 5 people go out 5 nights a weeks there will be the same crowd as if 10 people go out 2 nights a week.

Maybe there's just a ton of people and not a lot of restaurants and people like to eat out occasionally.

The immediate conclusion doesn't have to be that the Italians have a bunch of money that they are being frivolous with. There are other options.

nickthemagicman··on Against Dog Ownership (2020)
Agree. But that's not an indictment on dog ownership that's an indictment on bad dog owners.
nickthemagicman··on Against Dog Ownership (2020)
I assume its flagged because it's so ignorant that it's basically a troll article.

It boils down to: Owners who don't excercise and socialize their dog enough are abusive.

nickthemagicman··on Against Dog Ownership (2020)
>>> You will never have a romantic or sexual partner, you will never have children, you will never write a novel, you will never have a good job or start your own company, you will never restore a classic car in your driveway, you will never travel, you will never explore new lifestyles or ideas, you will never do much of anything beyond the extremely narrow confines of the life given to you by the aliens.

My dog, that eats roadkill, sniffs butts, and rolls in shit...is not having a 'meaningful' and 'life affirming' existence?

Just wow.

nickthemagicman··on Against Dog Ownership (2020)
As a dog owner there's a good point mixed up with a lot of faulty assumptions in this article.

Some points I believe the author is wrong about:

If given a choice, Dogs prefer the exact lifestyle the author is deriding. If you've ever had an outdoor dog on a lot of land, that's free to roam, they run briefly occasionally, then return to the home/den to sleep most of of the day. And if the owner is around depending on the dogs personality they'll typically spend it around the owner.

This is what dogs prefer.

The author is using the human version of Maslow's hierarchy to claim that dogs need fulfilling work and meaning to exist.

Dogs don't need to be 'working' to live happy fulfilling lives. Feral dogs aren't wandering around herding or retrieving things.

Dogs are animals and as long as they have food, excercise, some other dogs to socialize with and the pack alpha is happy with them that is the peak of their Maslow hierarchy of needs.

Only humans need filling work to do to be happy. Every other animal in nature is happy to just survive day to day and have companionship and the ability to explore their environment.

----

This is the only thing I think the author is correct about:

Dogs are a lot of work. They require a lot of excercise. Dogs that are left in apartments all day with a 15 minute walk is borderline abuse.

No one tells dog owners this though.

Dogs need a lot of socializing.

I take mine to the Dog park for an hour at least socializing daily.

Alot of cities have bar/dog parks so the humans and the dogs can both socialize.

Doggy daycare is a great option as well when you're not going to be home and have to leave the dog alone.

Dogs are extremely simple: If you can spend time with them and get them both excercise(mental and physical) and playtime with other dogs...that's the peak of what they need. Theyre not living an unfulfilling existence because they can't start that cappuccino stand they've always dreamed of.

However a lot of dog owners are not aware of this and treat their dog like furniture or clothing accessory and this is where the problems the author was talking about coming to play.

nickthemagicman··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
Good point. I stand corrected. I grabbed the first legit looking domain on Google (pew) for a reference thinking it matched something else I read and proved myself wrong.

Good catch.

So apparently the fed allowing inflation rates to increase is also paralleled by wage increases somehow? I'm guessing due to the stimulation of the economy by the inflation?

nickthemagicman··on Creating my personal cloud with HashiCorp
I agree CF kinda blows compared to real programming lang, and is probably legitimately better as an intermediate generated template than hand crafted code.

Even AWS has come up with a CDK to avoid building CF and use real prog langs.

I've never used it though.

I just personally think that if youre going to be a part of an ecosystem, things go much more smoothly when you stay in that ecosystem as much as possible.

Also Amazon is a massive company compared to hashicorp so I feel more comfortable about my infrastructures longevity with AWS tools.

Not saying hashicorp is going anywhere anytime soon and if it did the open-source community would probably take over, but it eliminates that tiny tiny risk.

I would probably use the AWS-CDK now instead of CF.

Word. They could be a similar comparison.

ReactOS is cool though. Thanks for showing me that. Does it use wine under the covers or is its own thing?

nickthemagicman··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
Median wage and median household income are two separate things.

Median household income can mean two parents are working...

Take a look at inflation adjusted wage growth for a singular person over time.
