nickserv··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
There is quite a bit of evidence for edits made to OSM appearing on Google Maps shortly after.

I've personally noticed this for edits I've made to obscure, completely out of the way areas.

Just don't upload to Google. They'll take the data from OSM anyway, after some time.

> if GitHub is down

Surely you mean when GitHub is down.

As an aside, I thought it a bit worrisome that the move to Sha256 is apparently delayed due to GitHub dragging their feet on this.

Prompts can certainly be tuned to a particular model, where updating the model actually results in worse performance. This is perhaps less true today than a year or two ago, but we have seen this on newer models as well. Typically, the less specific the instructions are, the less it's a problem. But sometimes you really need to get into specifics to get good results. Area of work is code porting and translation.
nickserv··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
When discussing fertility rates "sustainable" usually means "ratio of births to deaths in order to have a stable population". In developed economies that's around 2.1 children per woman. Anything under that and the population declines without immigration.

> There isn't a single product I can think of where I'll buy the same thing from multiple brands.

Weird, I'm the complete opposite. There's no product I can think of where I didn't buy different brands, if anything just to compare.

Nomads typically live in areas very poor in resources (like Touaregs in deserts) or with high seasonal variation (like Sioux in plains).

There is nothing inherently destructive with the lifestyle, and in fact many other animals are nomadic or have seasonal migrations.

Programmers work on trains too, you know. Some of the busiest metro lines in the world are fully automated, pretty sure that code is held to a higher standard than some shitty YouTube feature.

France has higher prices than several EU countries.

Spain in particular has low prices thanks to their solar and wind, and the Nordics thanks to hydro.

EU member *countries" certainly do, but that's true of all countries that have the ability.

If anything the EU puts limits on what EU member countries and companies can do. By hosting in one of the EU countries you have stronger legal guarantees on data privacy than in any other area. A possible exception is Switzerland (not a EU member), which historically has had even stronger privacy laws, though these have been weakened recently IIRC.

The restrictions are a good fit for children under 16.

As a parent you want to be able to reach them, and they want to reach their friend.

And as a parent you not want them waste their minds on YouTube garbage.

It shows that you don't need to know how to code to succeed in this type of project.

As someone who does know how to code, I find the approach to be great, as it can motivate others to try similar projects.

That any of this needed I would consider a form of social failure, a path to a future where only corporate entities can own anything.

Much respect for the hacking. Clawing back some freedom in a world determined to take it away.

By that logic all sorts of technical and scientific terms would be "meaningless".

Seems like playing semantics, to not say disingenuous, using "meaningless" to mean "unknown", when the former clearly has a negative connotation.

It's absolutely not a meaningless term, it's a classification in the Nova standard:

nickserv··on Ask HN: Is the web for machines (/llm.txt) the one we wished we had as humans?
I'm seeing quite a bit of request for these on my work's GitBook documentation site.

But perhaps these are developers specifically targeting these pages to feed whatever LLM they are using.

You can try running in gamescope, although in my experience Wayland has not been an issue. The few games I have that gave me problems in Wine didn't work any better when using an X11 session.
nickserv··on How do you build a semiconductor company on something that's free?
On the one hand this could be interesting for military and government looking to make sure there are no backdoors in the hardware they are using.

On the other hand, having it public makes exploits more likely since everyone can take a look.

For software this is beneficial, any fixed bug or exploit is then available to everyone and can be easily deployed.

I'm not very familiar with hardware but it seems like it would require new chips to be manufacturered to really fix any issues.
