nicksergeant··on Monsanto Weed Killer Roundup Faces New Doubts on Safety in Unsealed Documents
"known" dangers is debatable, that's what the issue is. As posted elsewhere in these comments: http://theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/does-glyphosate...
nicksergeant··on Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber
This. I would be ashamed to have Uber on my resume for much longer after this story ran, and will think twice when interviewing a candidate who does.
nicksergeant··on U.S. Citizens Now Hold About $1.3 Trillion in Student Loan Debt
They see through it. They just know they have no other option. Educators raise rates because they can, students pay the rates because they have to. It's the same problem we have in healthcare.

Until employers start scrutinizing education in terms other than "No degree? No thanks.", then we will continue to have this problem, in my opinion.

nicksergeant··on SubmitHub: how a solo founder built a $46k/mo SaaS business in 10 months
Putting on my devil's advocate hat here. I think you're greatly discrediting the value of the network effect.

Just because you build something that you need does not mean that you will be successful. People do that all the time, and then wonder why they don't make it. In reality, it's incredibly difficult to get your product in front of people who need it, even if it solves their problems perfectly.

Not saying you don't deserve credit for the hard work you put into this - you absolutely do. Just keep in mind that having a great product that solves a real problem for people is not enough. You either need luck or a network effect (and then you still need a little luck).

nicksergeant··on An Open Source, Self-Hosted Heroku
I currently have 16 apps deployed via Dokku on my 8GB Linode and am pretty happy with it. I have a wide variety of apps installed: Node, Django, Rails, and Elixir (Phoenix).
nicksergeant··on Rant HN: I hate hackerrank
On the flip side, now you have no idea if a developer is any good, because all they have to do is memorize a bunch of garbage interview algo techniques / questions.
nicksergeant··on How to make Slack less bad for you
If you used WeeChat as your IRC client, I have been using this wee-slack script (authored by a Slack employee) and it has been phenomenally good: https://github.com/rawdigits/wee-slack.
nicksergeant··on Autotune – Cloud Diagnostics and Performance Tuning
Really frustrating when websites just plaster me in the face with an email signup form before I even have a chance to read what the business / app is all about: http://i.nick.sg/1e71733605744a9ba084737429cc694d.png

I just closed the tab. It's not worth it.

nicksergeant··on iOS 9.3 Preview
F.lux is free software and they've said outright that as devices / systems implement color shifting as built-in systems, they've accomplished their goal.

The Slack community is very active: https://elixir-slackin.herokuapp.com/
nicksergeant··on Leaving the Mac App Store
Something like that. It's ridiculous. I could not use 1Password until the App Store came back up, which was pretty inconvenient. Tweetbot also had the same problem and the developer tweeted about the situation: https://twitter.com/tapbot_paul/status/664668084146339840 (and more tweets around that timeframe).
nicksergeant··on Leaving the Mac App Store
Good. The other day the App Store was down and I couldn't use half of my downloaded apps because they failed "verification". I'll be happy as a clam to see more developers move their apps off of the App Store.
nicksergeant··on Cards Against Humanity Has Made Over $54K Selling Nothing on Black Friday
Probably not any different than just donating to a GoFundMe fundraiser. It's not actually a deductible charitable donation, and you're receiving nothing in return.
nicksergeant··on Please don't use Slack for FOSS projects
Slack is free without archival of messages and other "premium" features.
nicksergeant··on Snipt: Code snippets for teams
This has been my project since 2009, but reposting as I've recently refocused our efforts on code snippets specifically for teams. Please let me know if you have any questions!
nicksergeant··on Nylas N1 – extensible open-source mail client
I love this and want to try it, but I find it strange that they emailed me to tell me about it being available, when I can't actually use it without an invite code.
nicksergeant··on I’m a white guy in Silicon Valley and I’m done buying the meritocracy myth
This is probably a side effect of startup founders not actually having lives outside of work.
nicksergeant··on The most profitable source of income for banks? Overdraft fees
Being in college with $50 to your name does not qualify you as poor.
nicksergeant··on How I Hacked Amazon’s $5 WiFi Button
Just a note, Misfit Flash now allows you to program button presses (single or double) to IFTTT, and from there you can go anywhere: https://ifttt.com/misfit

It's also fairly cheap at $19 (though not as cheap as these Amazon buttons, of course).

Edit: Misfit Flash is an activity / fitness tracker: http://misfit.com/products/flash

nicksergeant··on Twitter’s stock falls toward IPO-level prices
Not necessarily true - if the value gets low enough it'll get the boot from the NYSE.
nicksergeant··on Revised and much faster, run your own high-end cloud gaming service on EC2
Ah, my issue was I didn't have Wireshark installed, so tshark was not found.
nicksergeant··on Revised and much faster, run your own high-end cloud gaming service on EC2
Would you be willing to post your modified up.sh script here, or somewhere? Would love to see what you did to get it to work (still no luck on my end).
nicksergeant··on Revised and much faster, run your own high-end cloud gaming service on EC2
Ah, okay. Strange though, Steam client won't recognize the server even when connected. Thought maybe the IP address error was the problem.
nicksergeant··on Revised and much faster, run your own high-end cloud gaming service on EC2
I ran into the same thing. Not sure how to fix.
nicksergeant··on Intro to Node on AWS Lambda for S3 and Kinesis
You could just write some code to manually invoke the lambda with specific data using the SDK, no?
nicksergeant··on Intro to Node on AWS Lambda for S3 and Kinesis
This wasn't the case when I was uploading mine, but maybe they've done some sort of smart checking on the execution role (it'd be pretty hard to detect just by looking at the code, I would think).
nicksergeant··on Intro to Node on AWS Lambda for S3 and Kinesis
Yep, but if your lambda creates a new file in that bucket, it'll get called again (as an example).

Edit: realized my mistake in the wording of my comment above - _how_ I made the infinite loop had escaped me for a moment.

nicksergeant··on Intro to Node on AWS Lambda for S3 and Kinesis
But, if you have more than one Lambda working on a single S3 bucket, for example, it's possible to trigger executions infinitely.

Edit: my mistake - you still can't have multiple lambdas operating on a single S3 bucket. I had triggered an infinite loop by manipulating files in the same bucket that it was triggered on (triggering another execution, infinitely).
